4 Our School Vision St Patrick's Catholic School is a community, which reflects and celebrates Christ as its centre point. Our school is an integral part of the St Arnaud Parish where we affirm family values and faith. We are committed to provide high quality, holistic education, which aims to develop the individual child to reach their full potential. 5 School Overview St Patrick s Primary School is a Catholic parish primary school situated in the North Central region in the north west of the state of Victoria, Australia. The Sisters of Mercy conducted the school for many years. Today, the school has an enrolment of over sixty children and is in the care of dedicated lay teachers and supportive staff. St Patrick s Primary School recently experienced a major capital works program that has seen it transformed into a modern and well-equipped school. A staff of dedicated lay teachers, the School Board, the Parents and Friends Club and a supportive parent body service our school. All involved with the school are asked to promote and implement our Vision and Mission Statements of the school. Our school community is diverse, drawing from both the country and rural sectors of the St Arnaud community. The socio-economic makeup of the school community is likewise diverse, representing a wide range of situations and circumstances. Our students have a diverse range of abilities. The school, in its work, attempts to provide an appropriate education in faith and life for all who are entrusted to its care. St Patrick s Primary School has a current enrolment of 67 students operating as 3 class home groups that break into four learning groups for literacy and numeracy. The teaching and non-teaching staff are dedicated and professional to their role as members of the school community. Our school focuses on the whole development of each child. St Patrick s is a place where all members of the school community are encouraged to live out the Gospel teachings and take an active role in the life of the Parish and Diocese. Therefore, school is an integral part of the parish community. There is a strong link with the parish through the sacramental program and Eucharist celebrations throughout the year ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 4
6 Principal s Report 2016 was a year of continuous improvement for St Patrick s. With 2015 giving us the opportunity to implement solid and effective teaching strategies, 2016 saw a continuation of these strategies. The community was broadened by the attraction of new families, with enrolments peaking at 58 students for Our school fete, our opening and graduation Masses, our information nights and parent/teacher interviews were very well attended. Our three classes benefitted from being taught by graduate and experienced teachers. Our connection with the parish is fostered and maintained by Father Paul Mercovich. His leadership and engagement with the school Advisory Council, Eucharist and Liturgical celebrations enable the rich tradition of the Catholic Faith to be evident at St Patrick s Primary School. Our school structure consists of three main classes which break into four learning groups that concentrate on Literacy, Numeracy and Religious Education in the mornings. Subjects such as physical education, library and Art are offered in the afternoons. The school continued to update our technology resources by purchasing more chromebook computers. These are intended to phase out our existing technology as we move to more flexible learning arrangements. The school holds two assemblies per week. On Monday mornings we meet in order to give thanks, share prayer and set out our school goals for the week. A second is held on Fridays to celebrate our successes as a community. Our school has dedicated and professional staff that support, encourage and challenge the students to ensure the best learning outcome for all. 7 School Advisory Council Report The School Advisory Council met 8 times throughout the year in order to discuss the school s policies and to give advice to our Governing Authority and our Principal on matters that affect our school. We are proud of the physical developments that occurred during We opened up a new learning space that we titled the Hub which joined three classrooms with glass sliding doors, allowing for greater flexibility. The Hub is been used to conduct our intervention programs and is an enjoyable space to work in. We also have been working towards improving our outdoor area by changing the surface and building a covered outdoor shelter, research into the project is currently being done and the construction will begin in The SAC commended the yearly budget and sighted documents that indicated that the school is in a healthy financial position and that all finances are being spent for the benefit of our children ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 6
8 Catholic School Culture Goals & Intended Outcomes Throughout the 2016 school year St Patrick s worked toward improving the connection between the local parish and the school. We also aimed to improve the connectivity and collegiality of the Religious Education staff and created opportunities for the staff to work together. They included preparing Masses and Liturgies together and having the classes attend each other s ceremonies. In 2015 we highlighted the need for greater planning opportunities for Religious Education teachers. We included such meetings in our 2016 schedule. Achievements Throughout 2016 the school formed the policy of conducting one whole school Mass per term in the Catholic Church of St Arnaud. This complemented our liturgies that are run at school and the visits of the parish priest. Our graduation ceremony for the Year 6s was a combination of a morning Mass for the whole school to celebrate and a smaller night time function for the families of those graduating. VALUE ADDED - Improved our collaborative approaches to planning Awakenings - Strengthened the physical resources and the human resources that are devoted to this area. - Improved the iconography of the school. - Connected our children to the parish through regular Masses. - Promoted alms giving and fundraising for the needy ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 7
9 Community Engagement Goals & Intended Outcomes To improve the profile of the school in the community. To increase our enrolments. Achievements The school welcomed 14 preps into our school, gaining more than 50% of the children in the kindergarten. While this occurred for a number of reasons, our improved connection with the community is likely to have had a positive effect. Our school bus allowed our students to attend more activities off site, and visit places such as St Vincent s, the school library and sporting facilities. We held a number of community days at school where parents were invited to come into school and see their child s working environment. PARENT SATISFACTION. According to our most recent SRC data, 76% of parents indicated that they were satisfied with the school s performance ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 8
10 Leadership & Stewardship Goals & Intended Outcomes To further develop as a professional learning community where all staff are committed to and share responsibility for improving their own work and the work of their colleagues through engaging practices. Achievements 2016 was a year where younger staff members were offered, and thrived in, new roles. Our leadership positions in RE and Literacy were both filled by inexperienced leaders. The principal continued to take place in the professional development for new principals that is offered by the CEO of Ballarat. Our RE leader also participated in such professional development specifically targeting leadership. 11 Learning & Teaching Goals & Intended Outcomes Our comments received through our latest SRC results indicate the staff enjoy working at St. Patricks. Achievements Teacher capacity has been raised through professional learning and through the implementation of strategies and processes that are considered best practice. The staff have implemented a rigid testing regime that is being used to inform our teaching. All teachers have a clear understanding of the schedule and are able to use results to make teaching decisions. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Our very small cohorts in Years 3 and 5, and the transience of our students make the use of Naplan data difficult to assess. We treat the individual data very seriously and meet with parents to discuss results. 30% of our students achieve results below their age group standard on nationally moderated tests such as PatR and PatM, indicating a need for continued analyses of best practice. Over 20% of our students achieve well above nationally moderated tests such as PatR and PatM, indicating that students can achieve high levels of learning at St Patrick s ANNUAL REPORT TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY 10
12 Wellbeing Goals & Intended Outcomes To develop students to be active, confident, reflective learners who have the capacity and disposition to understand self, others and the world. Achievements St Patrick s applied for and received funding for a Chaplaincy program. The school researched and implemented the Bounce Back program to be taught in all three classes and to be used across the school for discipline and welfare incidents. We implemented a leadership program that targets the senior students and focuses on habits that foster relationships building and maintenance. After three days without explanation the principal will contact parents. If absences continue and no reasonable explanation provided the principal will initiate contact and arrange a meeting with parent/s. Follow up support plans will be put in place for continued absences. The newsletter will be used to inform families of the importance of high attendance. VALUE ADDED * Staff professionally developed in the Bounce Back program. * Students attended wellbeing days presented by outside presenters. * Students took part in introduction to bounce back program. * Students involved in artistic days and a bike rally/bike safety day. 13 Child Safe Standards Goals and Intended Outcomes We have worked closely with the CEO and complied with all Child Safety directives. We have paid particular attention to the Child Safety Code of Conduct. Achievements - We include our personalized Child Safety Code of Conduct in each employee s contract. - We induct all new employees in understanding that code of conduct - We have included the policy in our staff handbook. Future Directions The school is moving toward using IT in every learning area. We bought chromebooks for all students in Year 2 and above.
