This term is always full of events such as Prep Orientation, Year 6 culminating activities, swimming, Reporting on Student Progress, Nano Nagle feast day, our Christmas concert and quality learning all in only nine weeks. A busy term! Over the holidays, I was fortunate to travel to Rome, Italy. As a Catholic, it was great to visit what I believe, is the heart of Catholicism. Visiting places like St Peters, Assisi home of St Francis, The Gregorian the number one university in Rome, where many Popes have studied, many churches, the ruins and of course, the Colosseum. It was very interesting walking around on roads that were built thousands of years ago. One church that really stood out for me was San Clemente. The church you walk into was built in the 12th Century, then underneath this church is another built in the 4th Century and down another level is the church built in the 1st century. Simply amazing - the skills and knowledge that the people of these ancient times had. As a Catholic it was great to be immersed in this great history, art and buildings of the Catholic Church, and to hear the stories of the people involved over the last 2000 years. However, I must say the highlight of the two weeks was being involved in the Papal Audience. Pope Francis spoke to us about being forgiving and to work with everyone to make our world a better place. As you are standing there among tens of thousands of people from all over the world, you can appreciate that the Pope s message is certainly meant for a universal church. Consistency of Teacher Judgement Next Monday, our teachers join with the staff of St Patrick s Nanango, St Joseph s Gayndah and St Mary s Kingaroy, in order to work through the Consistency of Teacher Judgement process. The aim of the day is to ensure that teacher based judgements of student progress are compatible and in line with other schools.

2 Principal s message continued Enrolment for 2017 We are currently enrolling students in all year levels for If you know of any families looking to enroll at St Joseph s, could you please encourage them to contact the office to arrange an interview. We are looking forward to greeting and meeting our 2017 Prep students on Tuesday October 25th. This year Our Orientation Program will be over three weeks, which gives the children a chance to get to know the school a little better and become familiar with some of the staff members who will be part of their school days next year. We will also welcome the families of these students, as we share with them some of the important aspects of life at St Joseph s and assist them to be prepared for the start of a big adventure with their children. Planning for 2017 is well under way. A crucial part of this planning is current and future enrolments. If you are currently planning to leave St Joseph s, could you please let the office know ASAP. I look forward to the busy term ahead! Greg Cran Principal News from our Student Leaders The Nurture Group is encouraging students to bring in healthy lunches. At the end of the term they will draw a winner and the child chosen will win a lunch box and water bottle. The Teachers will hand out tokens at lunchtimes to those who have healthy lunches. Over the coming weeks the Nurture Group will give everyone examples of healthy snacks and lunches. Socktober On the 31 st of October, we will be participating in Socktober where young Australians raise vital funds for children in need. We will be a holding a Crazy Sock Day where students can wear crazy socks however they like. There will be a prize for the person wearing the craziest socks in each year level. It will be a gold coin donation from all the kids who participate.

3 APRE News Welcome to the final term for this year. This is traditionally a busy term, as we prepare the children for the next year level. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break and it was delightful to see the enthusiasm from the children on return to school. Last week we celebrated the Feast Day of St Francis (4 th October). St Francis is one of the world s most popular and beloved saints. He is the patron of animals, merchants and ecology. He was born in Assisi, Italy in 1181 to wealthy parents, but he gave up his wealth to serve the poor and follow God. God spoke to Francis on numerous occasions and asked Francis to rebuild the Church. Francis started an order of monks, now known as the Franciscan Monks. The Month of the Holy Rosary The month of October each year is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. This is primarily due to the fact that the liturgical Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7th. It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful. By promoting the value of children and focusing attention on the issues of child abuse and neglect. The objectives of Child Protection are to: Raise the profile of all issues connected with child protection Educate children on their right to feel protected and safe Thank you, Mr Francis, for delivering these very important lessons and equipping our students with protective strategies. 31st Oct - Assembly - Prep Faith Committee

4 APRE News continued CTJ On Monday 17 th October, which is a pupil free day, teachers gather to moderate on students samples of work. This is an important day for teachers, as they network with other schools to ensure the most effective practices are implemented for all students. Reading This term we are focusing on engaging students every day in reading. It was alarming to discover that not all children read to an adult on a regular basis. Reading opens doors for children and so it is critical that time and effort is dedicated to assisting children in this area. If you need any assistance helping your child to read, then please let me know. Our Reading Angels Program is in progress. Our wonderful volunteers and Leaders are reading to the children every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings beginning at 8.15am. Come along and read to a child.. And reap the rewards! What is happening in Religious Education this Term! In Prep this term we will be looking at the different ways people pray. We will also be comparing the two Christmas stories seen in the Bible. Year 1 are learning about what Jewish life was like in the time of Jesus, his mission and ministry and significant events, places and characters. In Year 2, students will be exploring the wisdom of the saints to help us understand about being co-creators and stewards of creation. In Year 3, students are learning to explain ways in which the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) welcome and strengthen members of the Church community. In Year 4, students will be exploring the structure of the Bible and coming to understand how the Bible helps each person to be a follower of Jesus. In Year 5/6, students will describe experiences of people in the past and in particular look at the wisdom from our Australian Saint, Mary MacKillop. We will also delve into the different Gospel writers and compare and contrast a number of bible passages in the lead up to the Christmas season. Pam Betts, Executive Director of Brisbane Catholic Education, included the following statement in a recent message, and at St Joseph s we are striving to make this a reality for all students. Thank you, Megan Irvine P & F News Relay for Life I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who not only turned up at the Kingaroy Showgrounds from Friday through to Sunday and put in a lot of hard work at the Relay for Life, but also to all those who helped in the organisation and lead up to the event. I would also like to thank the people who kindly donated eggs for our Sunday morning breakfast and also to Murgon Fruit Mart for the generous donation of products. Wondai Races This Saturday, we are also required to run our chip stall at the Wondai Races from 12pm through until about 5pm. Kingaroy Speedway Just to keep us on our toes, we have been invited back by Kingaroy Speedway to help with the manning of Pit Gate. The first Speedway is on the 22 nd of October at the Kingaroy Showgrounds. We are required to work at this gate from 12pm to 4pm. If you are able to help us at either or both of these events, could you please contact Sheree at the school office and let her know what times you are available.
