1 25th July, St Patrick s School Newsletter Dear Parents and Care Givers, News from the Principal Last Friday we launched into our Swim and Gym sessions at the YMCA. The children were grouped into trial groups and observations were made of their performances, in both the pool and the gym. The children returned to school tired, but happy! We look forward to the next four sessions, where children will have the opportunity to learn new skills and consolidate techniques already learned. 100 Days of School To celebrate, our F-2 students dressed as people from 100 years ago and played some games from yesteryear. We then gathered as a whole school and played games together in the school hall. We are proud of our students efforts so far this year in particular our Foundation Students, who have settled in so well to our school setting. Grandparents Mass and Morning Tea TOMORROW Wednesday 26 th July Tomorrow morning, we welcome our Grandparents and Special People to our school, to see our school in action and to celebrate Mass with us. This will be followed by a morning tea. Fr. Gary Jones will be our celebrant and we look forward to gathering together with our loved ones. Have a fabulous week everyone. Bambi Afford

2 News from the Rooms Year F/1/2 What exciting news in our room over the weekend... Congratulations to the Van Egmond family on the arrival of Tyler Matthew, we cant wait to meet him! Today we had great fun celebrating 100 days of school with lots of fun rotations and even some olden day games. Tomorrow we welcome our grandparents into the classroom and to join us at mass. Swimming and gymnastics went very well on Friday. Just a little reminder can children please bring thongs/crocs to wear to and from the pool as this helps to reduce the chance of missing socks :-) STUDENT OF THE WEEK Sophie Sawicki for her amazing detail and use of exciting words when writing about the school holidays. Year 3/4 Today we are learning about what it was like 100 years ago at school. We discovered that the teachers were very strict and used a cane or ruler to issue punishment. The children wrote on slates with chalk. They had copy book. They used this to copy the teachers work from the blackboard. When they wrote in this book they used pen and ink. Children sat at wooden desks with wooden benches. Each desk had an ink well. Sometimes they had a hot lunch but the food was a bit stodgy (heavy or hard to digest food). If you made a mistake or were naughty, you were sat in a corner with a dunce s hat on your head. We are glad we are at school today because the teachers are very friendly, we have many books and we can use technology to find out lots of information. STUDENT OF THE WEEK Finn Conroy for working very hard on writing using cursive script. Year 3/4 CAMP This year the Year 3/4 camp is at Narmbool. It has been booked for the Wednesday, 30th August to Thursday 31st August. The cost of the camp is $130. This includes accommodation, most meals and travel. The cost also includes an astronomy evening where the children will get to view the night sky using telescopes Year 5/6 The Year 5/6 class have made a great start to Semester two. In the past week, we have been learning to produce pie graphs, developed our descriptive writing skills and we are beginning to work on our Visual Art unit, by painting with water colours. STUDENT OF THE WEEK Justine Chapman for working hard to improve her writing, by expanding her vocabularly and including more detail and description into her work. Beginning this Thursday, 27th July, the Year 5/6 will be selling hot dogs for lunch. The hot dogs will cost $2 each and Students from Year 5/6 class will visit each room of a Thursday morning to take orders. Monies raised will be sent to a charity at the end of the year. Year 5/6 CAMP The Year 5/6 children will attend a two night camp on Wednesday 22nd November - Friday November 24th. The camp will be held at the Melbourne Discovery camp, which is situated in the CBD in Melbourne. Schools camps in the city are a great way to broaden children s horizons. In this fast-paced, technological world, kids are more aware about all the latest advancements. They are also knowledgeable about art and culture. When you have a camp in the city, children are given the opportunity to explore and develop their interests,as well as new skills that will help them in the future. Wednesday 30th August - Thursday 31st August Father's Day Breakfast: On Friday 1st of September we will be holding a very special father's day breakfast to celebrate all the wonderful things our Dad's do for us. Breakfast will be from 8am and will be followed by a liturgy at 9am. We are looking forward to celebrating our amazing Dad's with you all. FOUNDATION CLASS STUDENTS - Please return school nursing questionnaire by Friday 4th August. Book Week 19 th 26 th August 2017 Book Week is celebrated each year in mid to late August. This annual event highlights the importance of reading and draws on the joy of stories and the creativity of Australian Authors. This year the Book Week theme is Escape to Everywhere. To celebrate this, we will have a whole school Pyjama Day. Children are invited to wear their pajamas and bring along their favourite bed time story book to share with their friends, along with a gold coin donation for a Catholic charity. 4 This Wednesday, 26th of July, we are celebrating Grandparents day and all the amazing things that they do for us. Grandparents are invited to share in morning classes until 9:40am, before heading over to the church to celebrate Mass at 10 am. Grandparents are then invited back to school for a morning tea. Can children please bring a labelled photo of their grandparents. Multi-Sports Program - Wednesday's (3:40-4:40) Starting 2nd August Kick, Dribble and Spike your way into our famous Kelly Sports Multi-Sports program. This term we are running a 9 week program where we aim to introduce the kid's to the wonderful world of sports whilst improving their Fundamental Motor Skills. Kelly Sports will be covering the following sports in Term 3: Soccer, Football, Volleyball, Basketball and Crazy Games! Our sessions focus on fun, enjoyment and maximum participation. So get a group of friends together and come and experience what Kelly Sports is all about!! 6 Reportable Conduct Scheme Victorian Government Reportable Conduct Scheme from 1 July 2017, the Victorian Government has legislated for the introduction of a Reportable Conduct Scheme (RCS) to improve oversight of how organisations respond to allegations of child abuse and child-related misconduct by employees and volunteers. The RCS seeks to ensure that organisations providing services for children and young people prioritise their safety and wellbeing. It forms part of the broader child safety framework and complements initiatives already in place in all schools. Our school is now implementing the RCS. Under the Reportable Conduct Scheme, there are five types of reportable conduct which a school must report in relation to staff, volunteers and contractors: sexual offences committed against, with or in the presence of a child sexual misconduct committed against, with or in the presence of a child physical violence against, with or in the presence of a child any behaviour that causes significant emotional or psychological harm to a child significant neglect of a child. More information about the RCS is available at the website of the Commission for Children and Young People, which is the organisation responsible for overseeing the Scheme: ccyp.vic.gov.au/reportable-conduct-scheme/about-the-reportable-conductscheme/. At St. Patrick s School, if you have a concern about the conduct of any adult who works or volunteers in our school, please report this to the Principal as soon as possible. If you have a concern about the conduct of the Principal, the protocol is to report such concerns to the Director of Catholic Education for the Diocese of Ballarat.
