WORKING BEE Next Sunday 26 Oct If you could find an hour or two next Sunday morning to come along to our Working Bee we would really appreciate it! Our school relies heavily on the terrific support that we receive from parents at our working bees. This Sunday we have a number of projects we would like to undertake but WE NEED YOU! Come along, meet other parents and enjoy a sumptuous morning tea and lunch put on by our Auxiliary. The work is not too strenuous and the sense of satisfaction at helping out your child's school is most rewarding. If you are able to attend please complete the form attached to last week's newsletter and return to the General Office or ring Mr Kim Fallon on I look forward to seeing you there on Sunday morning, commencing at 9.00am. VSC promoting Innovation & Excellence VSC has been successful in its joint application for funding in the Innovation and Excellence program. In conjunction with Vermont Primary School, Rangeview Primary School and Livingstone Primary School we will seek to develop over the next 3 years and beyond, a joint approach to the teaching and development of Thinking skills and Literacy in our school. Associated with these is a renewed focus on student engagement and the building of resilience in our students. These aims are in line with our new Charter. It is hoped that our school can develop a seamless continuum from P-12 so that children entering VSC will be building on the foundations of learning developed at our feeder schools. Our schools has a proud history of working together and this joint project will assist us to strengthen further our professional ties. To assist us in facilitating the goals of this project an educator at "Leading Teacher" level will be appointed in the near future, funded by our Innovation and Excellence grant. This is a very exciting project and provides our schools with an opportunity to co-operate closely in improving student outcomes in our cluster. AIM TEST RESULTS Vermont Secondary College students in Year 7 have performed very well in the recent Statewide AIM tests. Whilst we all have serious reservations about relying on only one measure of student achievement they nevertheless give us an interesting and relevant snapshot of student performance at the time. In all areas reading, writing, spelling and mathematics our students have outperformed their like school counterparts. As expected they are also

2 Page 2 a long way ahead of the state mean. This is not surprising given the very close link between socio economic background and student performance. The AIM tests also provide some substance to other data which indicates that across the state, student's extended writing skills need to be a focus for sustained attention, particularly that of boys. Whilst our VSC boys do very well compared to their peers across the state and in like schools, this is an area where work needs to be done. It is also important to note that this test is done in mid Year 7 indicating that students across the state are coming to secondary school with lower skills in extended writing compared to the other English strands. SPORTS SUCCESS Once again Vermont Secondary College has won the Eastern Zone trifecta of Swimming, Cross-Country and Athletics in the one year. This is an outstanding achievement and reflects the magnificent talents and dedication of our students as well as the commitment and enthusiasm of our staff and the many parents who assist. Mr Stevens has again demonstrated his superb management of College Sport, ably assisted by Ms Hailes has been a very successful sporting year for Vermont. Congratulations to all our students who have participated so enthusiastically in our Sports program this year and have been so successful in their performances. Well done. Rod Williamson Principal EMA CHEQUES A reminder that EMA cheques are available for collection at the General Office The Year 10 Community Involvement class will host a Christmas Morning Tea on Wednesday, 5 November in the College Library ENGLISH REPORT e University of NSW English Competition Students at the college participated in the Australasian Schools English Competition, which is run by the University of New South Wales Education Testing Centre. The Competition assesses students abilities in reading comprehension, language skills, spelling and punctuation. It is beneficial to students and teachers as it is an independent assessment tool with detailed diagnostic reports on individual students. The diagnostic report enables students and teachers to: Identify personal strengths and weaknesses Compare their achievement with the rest of Victoria Monitor individual progress from year to year Celebrate success through receiving a Certificate The best achievement came from nine students who received High Distinction Awards. Sixtyeight students received Certificates of Distinction, one hundred and forty students received Certificates of Credit and four hundred and seventy eight students were acknowledged with Certificates of Participation. On behalf of the English team I would like to congratulate the following students: YEAR 7 High Distinction Melissa Closter Aaron Lam Hannah Tricker Distinctions Elisabeth Barber Eioin Bosley Jessica Crossett Nicolette Duncan Tara Englehardt Gemma Hamilton Kathryn Lipstine Clare McDermott Lucy Meer Jacqueline Mills Charles Tricker YEAR 8 Distinctions Tom Abraham Kimberley Blake Sean Bourke Owen Chatelier Kelly Goodwin Leonie Hoskin Jessica Italiano Shauna Phoon Christine Smoley Benjamin Westwood YEAR 9 High Distinctions Elise Harding Chris Plumridge Teresa Gray Kimberly Reynolds Jessica Barling Amanda Cohan Emma Darcy Tara Dunshore Simon Greenwood Ryan Harding Lauren Mann Campbell McNolty Melissa Miles Holly Tampling Lochlan Anderson Corey Bosley Dillan Burchall Lauren Constable Madi Holdsworth Andrew Huang Vanessa Li Natalie Rogers-Sultana Katrina Stopinski Lily Zhang Jacqui Pavey Distinctions Frances Barber David Bryden Peter Cox Leigh Fawkes Katie Gaut Timothy Johnson Catherine Lexuan Nicola Munzel Jacqui Staunton Tegan Webb YEAR 10 Distinctions Christopher Andrews Victoria Creswell Cathryn Joy Michael Llewellyn Samantha Truong Jason Wigg YEAR 11 High Distinction Carmen Wong Distinction Laura Churcher YEAR 12 Distinction Daniel Jackson Jessica Bastiani Teryn Callaway Sonya Cronin Caitlin Garth Caroline Hunter David Lacey Katherine Mills Aaron Solla Lisa Warner All students are to be congratulated on their efforts. 4 Page 4 WOLLANGARRA A Unique Camp Experience for students LIKE TO SEND A KID AWAY FOR A WEEK? And you all enjoy the experience? Well read this! Wollangarra is a camp for students and it is situated on a small remote river flat of the Macalister River, halfway bet ween the towns of Heyfield and Licola. Wollangarra is actually a combination of two aboriginal words. "Wollanbin" meaning high places and "Koolangarra" meaning young people. The camp is a unique and simple place. It has no electricity, is accessed by a flying fox and has been built by hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers using second hand recycled materials. Over two and a half thousand second-hand old railway sleepers were used in the construction. FORMER STUDENT RELEASES NEW SONGS VANESSA WAINGENT LIVE ON RADIO Since leaving Vermont Secondary College in 2002, Vanessa Waingent has quickly established herself in a career as a full time singer, songwriter, choreographer and dance teacher. She represented Australia at the Beijing Song Festival in 2002, and is off to China again in late November as one of our National representatives at this global song-fest. Vanessa, who performs under the name Vanessa Tara, has had some interesting assignments over the last 12 months, ranging from planning, choreographing, arranging the music and performing in a 15 minute floor show for a Latin themed black tie function for a major Australian company at the swish Park Hyatt Ballroom, to the Nationally televised Royal Children's Hospital Concert. In between she has been involved in a host of work for charities, in particular the entertainers charity, the Variety Club, where she has become the face representing young entertainers in Victoria. As well as a fast growing career in singing, Vanessa is also an elite level dancer and currently teaches funk and tap dancing. As well as heaps of performances, Vanessa has been busy writing and recording in the studio. She is especially excited about a new number she has written and recorded titled 'Give a Little Love' a moving ballad inspired by a visit to the Port Phillip Special School which caters for kids with a range of disabilities. The theme of the ballad is "Give a little love and it'll come right back". These are excerpts from the Wollangarra newsletter 'The end of Autumn' '.. We are waking (it seems) every morning to new born lambs, lots of little jobs awaiting their turn, a vegie garden ready for its winter crop, a mouse (or 100) and Scotty's (one of our staff) new mullet. Our little river flat is changing and we are privileged to be a part of it.' 'Wollangarra allows young people the opportunity to discover the heart of Victoria's high country in small, supervised hiking groups, and shows them practical and important ways in which they can help the environment.' 'Vermont students have been going to Wollangarra for many years but the camp has not run over the past 2. It is intended to offer the camp to Vermont students in Years 9 and 10 in Senior students are also encouraged to attend after completion of their exams.' 'Over the years I can honestly say that every student who has been to Wollangarra has said that it has been the most memorable experience of their years at school.' 'I had an awesome time. I shared some great memories with people I've never bothered to get to know. I met some great people that are so different from me and I won't forget them ' (Mark Year 10) 'I think "Woll" is the best place on earth. At first it seems so tough not to have TV, or a radio, or my phone(!) but when I spent a bit of time I forgot to miss it! There's so much to see and so many unreal places to walk and cool people to meet ' (Kasey Year 9) 'I see Wollangarra as a wonderful opportunity for Vermont students to broaden their horizons. It sounds exciting, challenging, rewarding and most of all fun.' (Mr Williamson, School Principal) A meeting will be held early in 2004 for those interested. A. Parsons Camp Organiser To coincide with the first airplay of this potential best seller, Vanessa will be interviewed live on Radio 3RPP 98.7FM on Saturday 25 October at 2.30pm. The radio station will also be playing another of her own works 'Touch', a sensational dance track which is generating a lot of interest in music circles around Melbourne. Vermont Secondary encourages students and teachers to tune into 98.7FM on Saturday afternoon and lend their support to Vanessa Tara. If you like the new tracks, ring the radio station on and let them know! Somehow, Vanessa is still finding time to study some VCE subjects. She recognises the importance of continuing with her education despite her meteoric career in music. Host Families & Exchange Students We are still hoping to be able to place a number of exchange students, boys and girls aged from Germany, America, Japan, Italy, Belgium and Brazil, with voluntary host families, which will then enable the students to come here next January February. If you and your family would benefit from and enjoy a new member of the family and international friend whom you choose, have a spare bed, share room or own, and can afford an extra person at mealtimes, please call Klaus Schumann on (03) Your call would be very welcome and appreciated. Students are here for 3, 5 or 11 months. Should you wish to go overseas yourself as an exchange student, please phone. Klaus Schumann Community Co-ordinator

5 Page 5 SPORTS REPORT STATE ATHLETICS 4 GOLD, 5 SILVER, 4 BRONZE Last Tuesday 16 students from Vermont competed at the State Athletics Finals at Olymp ic Park. Illness and injury robbed the Year 7 Boys team, but they still fought out all their games. The Year 7 Boys Cricket team also won through to the next round and the Year 7 Girls B Basketball team were runners-up. Our first match was against Doncaster SC, who had won through convincingly in their own District event. We were in to bat first, and despite a poor start with Sarah and Simone out early, we managed a competitive total of 5/67, with Rachel Englehardt scoring 29 n.o.. Doncaster then went in to bat, dropping two early wickets to be 2/13 before consolidating to be 3/31 then 4/34, 5/44, 6/56, 7/56 (at this stage, the Doncaster coach admitted that they had underestimated us, and that we still had a slight chance!) then they were 8/57, 9/64, and with only three runs to make with six overs to go, Sarah got her fourth wicket to leave them stranded and all out for 64, three runs short of our total. A fantastic effort, and a huge shock to Doncaster! Vermont 5/67 defeated Doncaster all out/64 R. Engelhardt 29 n.o. S. Weichert 4/3 C. Gover 11 R. Engelhardt 3/26 S. Stevenson 5 C. Gover 1/8 S. They had scored 2/138 in their first game, but were shocked to lose their key opening batter first ball to Chelsea, recovering to be 2/39 then 3/52. They then began to get away with their score totalling 3/99 at the end of the innings, a reasonably good result for us. Then it was our turn to bat, with Chelsea showing complete disrespect to their bowling, hitting consecutive 4 s off the first two balls of the innings. Unfortunately this didn t last, as she was caught out wide trying to hit a 6 off one of the next balls. Sarah went cheaply again, followed by Rachel, leaving us 3/13 early. Elise, Sophie and Rachel S combined with Simone to lift our total to a competitive 7/58, before Chantelle, Keira and finally Emma added some vital runs to finish our innings all out for 71, some 28 runs short. 7 Page 7 Music Notes SPRING CONCERT Thank you and congratulations to all involved with the Spring Concert last week. It proved to be a great night, with a wide variety of items and smooth production. Our Principal, Rod Williamson, wrote to me as follows: It was an excellent performance which really showcased the outstanding talents of our students. I was particularly pleased to see the number of students involved across a range of bands and ensembles. The Irish Band was a real hit with me! Congratulations to you and your Instrumental Music team on a wonderful night. Highlights of the program included Reel Fiddlin played by the Folk Group and Emily Wiltshire s and Ally Munro s Highland dancing to Swallowtail Jig, The Sea of Berries and Volta Do Mar by Paul Jarman sung by the Chamber Choir, and Sally Pottenger s rendition of Sway by Bic Runga. Also featured on the program were two original compositions premiered at the concert: Mr. Peter Graham s Fanfare followed by his arrangement of Gershwin s Strike Up The Band, and Tulips composed by Michael Llewllyn (Year 10) and played by the String Quartet. Special thanks to our hard working stage crew: Helen and Rob Jackson, Sue and Doug Terrill, and Michael Plumridge. Thank you also to the Front of House Team: Christine Ingram, Vicki Box, Judy Tricker and Ruth Hoskin; to Margaret Uren, Kim Fallon and Diane Francis for supervising students in the auditorium, and to the Music Support Group for sponsoring and organising the concert. MUSIC FROM VERMONT NEWSLETTER The October edition of the Music Newsletter was distributed at the Spring Concert. Our newsletter is published twice yearly and contains a variety of articles and photographs about the Music Program. Additional copies are available in the Music Office. If you did not get a copy at the concert, please stop by the Music Office and collect one. Many thanks to the students who contributed articles and photographs, and to Mrs. Vicki Box for organising and editing the newsletter. SUMMER BAND Summer Band started last week with a characteristically wild rehearsal as our Year 10 and 11 musicians tried out their new instruments! However, despite the eagerness of the older students, many of our younger band members did not attend. Please stir them up and encourage them to participat e. All instrumentalists in Years 7-11 should attend Summer Band rehearsals. These rehearsals will be held Thursday afternoons 3:30-4:30. Concert Band rehearsals will finish after the Spring Concert. Junior Band members are invited to attend the Thursday afternoon rehearsals as well as the Junior Band rehearsals on Tuesday morning. DONCASTER ROTARY JAZZ FESTIVAL SATURDAY 18/10/03 Members of the Stage Band performed at the Doncaster Rotary Jazz Festival last Saturday evening to a small but enthusiastic audience. The band played a 45-minute program that featured solos by our graduating Year 12 students John Hoskin and Daniel Jackson, and our up and coming soloists Jason Wigg and Peter Newmarch. Also working hard were Michael Llewellyn, who covered both piano and bass lines, Jack Thomas, who did an excellent job of drumming, and Jack Bourne, who held down the trumpet line on his own. Special thanks to Rob and Helen Jackson for transporting music and equipment to the venue and return. VALEDICTORY DINNER MONDAY 20/10/03 The annual Valedictory Dinner was held at Rembrandt s Restaurant Monday evening. Two ensembles provided entertainment for our graduating Year 12 students and their families. Cory Mollison (guitar) and Claire Andrews (voice) performed a number of contemporary ballads, and a band consisting of Jason Wigg (saxophone), Peter Newmarch (guitar), Will Hammersla (trumpet), Jack Thomas (drums) and Victoria Cresswell (bass) played a program of jazz standards.
