1 6 June 2017 Principal s Report The events of last night in Bay Street, Brighton and the tragic attacks carried out in Europe over the weekend on innocent members of the public, are broadcast into our lounge rooms almost instantly and the saturation of electronic media makes it almost impossible to shield our children from these horrors. As parents we need to raise issues with our children, encourage them to share their thoughts and develop an appreciation of these issues and their impact on the wider community. Next Monday is the Queen s Birthday long weekend. Children are not required at school on Monday June 12 th. Our current Queen s actual birthdate is April 21 st. She was born in Last Thursday we held a well-attended parent information evening to inform our community about the Resilience Project operating at Gardenvale PS in There were many messages delivered on the night, but the key pieces were around being grateful for what we have (gratitude), walking in other people s shoes (empathy) and being present (mindful). Some other points highlighted the need to reduce the impact of electronic devices and ensure your children have opportunities to develop their resilience skills. A special mention to Julie Pitts for her leadership of this important initiative. Thanks to all those who attended and to the organisers for their vision and courage to make this work a priority in our school. 2 Continued from previous page Mid-year written reports on student progress are being prepared at the moment. These will be sent home on Wednesday June 28 th. On Wednesday June 7 th we are holding a Sport Dress-Up Day and we encourage all our students to wear their favourite sporting clothes or wear their team colours to school on this day. We ask all those involved to make a gold coin donation to support our Year 6 student Josh Finkelstein, who is representing Victoria in the National Indoor Cricket Championships played in Mackay, QLD taking place during the upcoming holidays. Our school is a member of the State Primary School Sport s Association and we are able to send children to various regional events, trials and matches with the aim of gaining state or national selection in these teams. Part of the school s obligation is to support these students in raising transport costs to ensure they can compete in these events. Our school has a specific uniform policy and dress code that asks all children to attend their classes in school uniform, be neatly presented and wear their uniform with pride. We have many items of lost property and clearly named uniform items can be returned to their owners to ensure everyone is dressed appropriately. PSW is our uniform provider and they are in North Road, Ormond. Trading Hours: Tue to Fri: 9:00am - 5:00pm Sat: 10:00am - 1:00pm Address & Contact Details 1/596 North Rd Ormond VIC Phone: ormond@psw.com.au Chris Chant Starting school at GPS in 2018?
