1 Bend Senior High School CHRISTOPHER REESE KAREN STINER BRYAN TEBEAU Principal Assistant Principal Assistant Principal August 7, 2016 On behalf of the Bend Senior High School Staff, we would like to welcome you back to school. In order to be a successful Lava Bear, it is important to get involved early. This letter not only welcomes you but also brings news of important events and information. The Bears are Back : August 24 th and 25 th August 24: Seniors 8-9am: Last names beginning with A-K 9-10am: Last names beginning with L-Q 10-11am: Last names beginning with R-Z. Juniors 12-1pm: Last names beginning with A-K 1-2pm: Last names beginning with L-Q 2-3pm: Last names beginning with R-Z. August 25: Sophomores 8-9am: Last names beginning with A-K 9-10am: Last names beginning with L-Q 10-11am: Last names beginning with R-Z. This is your day to have your school pictures taken and ID card made, purchase an ASB sticker, buy your new yearbook at a discounted price, purchase your ipad insurance, and purchase your on-campus parking pass (Juniors and Seniors Only). The school store will be open so you can stock up on some fresh Lava Bear gear! If you can t be here on that day, you can take care of this business after school starts, and picture re-take day is October 3. ASB, parking (Juniors and Seniors only), yearbooks, and ipad insurance can be purchased in advance online at NEW THIS YEAR: DUE TO OUR SIZE AND LIMITED NUMBER OF PARKING SPACES, ON CAMPUS PARKING PERMITS WILL BE ISSUED TO JUNIORS AND SENIORS ONLY. I-PAD ROLL OUT: ipads will be deployed during the first two weeks of school. As you may know, our school is in our third year of the Bend-La Pine Schools Digital Conversion. This means that teachers have started to incorporate digital resources and experiences into their classrooms in ways that create a more personalized, rigorous, and contentrich experience for your children. As part of this conversion, your student will be issued an ipad for daily use both in and out of class. This device will be essential to your child s classroom experience as part of digital conversion. Parent involvement in this process is crucial. As the parent of a digital learner, we want you to be involved in helping to guide your student s use of technology as part of their learning. Your student will receive a district Acceptable use Agreement and Student
2 Pledge. They will need to bring this signed form with them on the first day of school in order to receive their ipad. Students also need to bring their ipad covers with them if they removed it from their ipad. Students new to the district will receive one if they purchase insurance. Covers will be for sale in the Bear s Cave if you choose not to purchase insurance. District approved covers are also required in order for a student to receive their ipad. We strongly encourage families to purchase insurance on their ipad. Cost for insurance is $30 for one year and includes an ipad cover if you do not already have yours from last year. NEW BELL SCHEDULE: All of the Bend-LaPine high schools will be switching to a new schedule. Please see the attached calendar and schedule. We are very excited about this schedule as it slows things way down for students and staff. We believe that 72-minute classes will be beneficial in a lot of content areas. We will try very hard to eliminate the confusion of a Blue/Gold/White day schedule. Students still take seven classes total, but only 5 on any given day. The trick will be knowing what day it is and reporting the right class. SCHEDULES WILL BE AVAILABLE ONLINE IN STUDENTVUE/PARENTVUE BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 1. FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR ALL STUDENTS: September 8 th, 7:45 AM 2:45 PM. MEMORIZE YOUR ADVISORY ROOM ASSIGNMENT-LISTED ON YOUR SCHEDULE!! You will be going to your Advisory class to pick up a first day packet and a copy of your schedule. PICTURE DAY: During Bears are Back, see page 1 for your time slot. All students will have their picture taken for ID card purposes, even if they do not wish to purchase a packet. Picture packets were mailed to you directly from Lifetouch, and will also be available in the main office on picture day. To purchase school pictures, the order form and payment must be presented that day. ID cards are free If an ID card is lost, replacement ID cards will cost $5.00. Picture retake day will be October 3 rd. We look forward to meeting you and will do all we can to help make this the best four years of your life. Sincerely, Chris Reese Karen Stiner Bryan Tebeau Principal Assistant Principal Assistant Principal PS TO PARENTS WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR PICTURE DAY-IF INTERESTED, CONTACT THE SCHOOL AT
