1 St Gerard S CatHOLIC Primary School 71 Gladstone Rd, North Dandenong 3175 Ph: NEWSLETTER #10 27th April 2018 DATES TO REMEMBER Monday, 30 April School Closure Curriculum Day Wednesday, 2 May School Cross Country The Anzac Day Tradition Anzac Day, 25 April, is one of Australia s most important national occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Thursday, 3 May Family Math's Night Tuesday, 8 May School Photos Thursday, 10 May Mothers Day Stall See newsletter flyer for class times Friday, 11 May Mothers Day Raffle Draw Assembly 2:30 pm Tickets will be going home with your child ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces quickly became known as Anzacs, and the pride they took in that name endures to this day. When war broke out in 1914 Australia had been a federated nation for only 13 years, and its government was eager to establish a reputation among the nations of the world. When Britain declared war in August 1914 Australia was automatically placed on the side of the Commonwealth. In 1915 Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of the expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the allied navies. The ultimate objective was to capture Constantinople (now Istanbul), the capital of the Ottoman Empire, an ally of Germany. At the end of 1915 the allied forces were evacuated from the peninsula, with both sides having suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. More than 8,000 Australian soldiers had died in the campaign. Gallipoli had a profound impact on Australians at home, and 25 April soon became the day on which Australians remembered the sacrifice of those who died in the war. Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the actions of Australian and New Zealand forces during the campaign left a powerful legacy. What became known as the Anzac legend became an important part of the identity of both nations, shaping the ways in which they viewed both their past and their future.
2 PRINCIPAL Dear Parent, Parents are invited to the planting of our very own Gallipoli Oak at 2:45pm this Friday. Our tree is a direct descendant from the seeds collected at Gallipoli by a soldier in 1915, the environment Australian soldiers were in that began the ANZAC tradition. Thousands of these soldiers did not return, being at rest in unmarked graves in a foreign country. This little sapling is historically very significant and a very privileged way we can have a permanent reminder at school to pass on to our new young Australians that our just and peaceful society has been fought for and these battles set the basis of the human rights we value and expect today for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren and so on. May they Rest In Peace and may we strive to educate new generations to have a sense of history to enable them to honour life, justice and peace. We have children that are using devices at home when they shouldn t be and using online chat platforms that they are too young to be using. This is concerning and it is so important we teach children safe use through clear boundaries and expectations. No child should have a device in their bedroom. If nothing else it leads to sleeping problems and a very reduced ability to concentrate at school. There is more information in the newsletter about children and the safe and healthy use of technology. Please understand these devices can have a very bad impact on your child if they are not well controlled. I will be finishing at St Gerard s at the end of this term and beginning at St Joseph s Springvale in Term 3. I will certainly cherish my last months at St Gerard s and keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. Fr Arthur has began meeting with Catholic Education Melbourne to plan the selection process for a new principal. Please pray for him, that the Holy Spirit guides the process and brings to the community a faith filled visionary leader to make your great school even better. Punctuality continues to be a concern, as each morning we have more than 10 students arriving late. It disrupts the class routine when children arrive in dribs and drabs. As a parent it is your responsibility to have your child at school by 8:45 am at the latest. Punctuality is also a concern after school. Staff are happy to look after students for minutes after dismissal, but after that it becomes unreasonable to expect staff to mind your child. Staff have meetings and appointments to attend to and are professional people whose time is valuable and planned. Please note that we have 3 school closure days this term. These are marked on the calendar, with one happening next Monday, April 30.The remaining two are the last two days of second term. Have a great weekend and God Bless, Chris. PLEASE REMEMBER NO SCHOOL NEXT MONDAY.

4 wellbeing NEWS This week in our SEL we revised the Use manners and speak appropriately statement from our Give Me 5 matrix. We discussed what manners are (saying please, thank you, may I) and when we use them. We also discussed what it looks, sounds and feels like when people speak appropriately to each other. This included discussion around body language and tone of voice. CYBER SAFETY UPDATE How can I tell if my child is online too much? If your child s online activity appears to be having a negative impact on their personal wellbeing or physical behaviour (or on your family), then consider discussing expectations and time limits. Some of these noticeable changes that can indicate excessive internet use include: online activities interfering with general health and wellbeing obsession with particular websites or games anger when being asked to take a break from online activity appearing anxious or irritable when away from the computer spending increasing amounts of time online a declined interest in social activities like meeting friends or playing sport excessive tiredness decline in academic performance and failing to complete schoolwork seemingly isolated or withdrawn reduced personal hygiene negative changes in their behaviour ongoing headaches, eye strain and sleep disturbance.
