Fr Leon spoke about the need for anything that is important to be built on strong foundations. We are blessed here at St James School to have rich Catholic Josephite traditions and history; excellent learning outcomes for students; and strong school-family-community partnerships -and this certainly gives us strong foundations to build on today. The Year 4/5 students read prayers asking God s help to be people with strong Gospel Values of honesty, forgiveness, love, justice and compassion. It will not be easy and we will all make mistakes along the way and so we need the strong foundation of God s unwavering love and guidance. We need to be able to acknowledge when we do make mistakes, ask for forgiveness and try to fix it and do better. The time of Lent is a good time to focus our attention on the areas of our lives where we need to do this and make a change, strengthening our foundations. Thank you everyone for your attendance or apologies for our Parent Information Evening held last Tuesday evening. Thank you to staff for their presentations in their classrooms. We hope that the information shared deepens your understanding of the year ahead for your child or children. This certainly contributes to building strong foundations! It is impossible to cover everything in half an hour, so further communication is essential throughout the year. Please do not hesitate to contact your child s class teacher if you ever have a question, need some clarification, have a suggestion or a celebration - positive feedback is always welcome on what is working well! Blessings for the fortnight ahead, Michelle Miller Principal

Anniversary of the Apology: 13 February GOOD LUCK CHELSEA! Chelsea W will be representing St James School at the Jamestown Community School swimming carnival tomorrow. Thank you Chelsea and we wish you all the best. WORLD OF MATHS This Friday we will have a visit from World Of Maths which provides hands-on mathematical experiences for students. The students work in small groups to problem solve, manipulate, apply and extend their mathematical thinking. Help from parents during the sessions would be much appreciated to enable the students to get the most out of the experience. Please contact your child s class teacher if you are able to help. Session Times: R-3: 9.40am am 4-7: 11.30am - 1pm SCHOOL CLOSURE MONDAY 19TH FEBRUARY A reminder that St James School will be closed next Monday for teaching staff to attend Professional Learning in Adelaide. Our day will be presented by consultants from Catholic Education SA and we will be learning about improving student learning outcomes through a Learning Improvement Inquiry action research project that will run over two years. We will investigate pedagogy and curriculum design which focuses on student agency and capabilities to enable all students to be successful learners. It would be fantastic to be able to tie our school closure days in with JCS but this is not very often possible as our days are usually dictated by our different systems and availability of facilitators of learning specific to our own schools. BUS STUDENTS Jamestown Community School is having a Pupil Free Day on Monday 5th March. There will be no buses running, parents of St James students are asked to please make alternative transport arrangements to and from school. Thank you. STUDENT WELL-BEING PROGRAMS Thank you for your replies for the programs offered in We have tried to include as many children as possible in these sessions. If your child was not included in a program this term they will be considered in the remaining terms this year. In addition, each Tuesday the library will be open during lunchtime. This will provide an opportunity for any student in the school to come in and talk if they need to share something or talk through some strategies or ideas. Annie O'Reilley

3 GROUNDS AND MAINTENANCE - MOWING ROSTER Thanks to all who have offered to help out with mowing our ovals. The roster will be put in our Newsletter and Bulletin to remind you when it is your turn. Thank you for keeping our grounds looking great! 4 SCHOOL BOARD THANK YOU Thank you very much to Roger L, Shaun C and Greg A who came in on Sunday 11th February and spent several hours working on removing the old playground borders. There is still more to do but they have made a good start. PLAYGROUND NEWS One of the major projects for us this year is to re-do our playground. On Wednesday 21st February, Simon Hutchison from Climbing Tree (nature play) will be coming to work with students, parents and staff on plans for the playground. Parents who would like to have some input are invited to come along and meet with Simon on Wednesday 21st February from 3.30pm. If you have some ideas but are unable to attend, please submit your thoughts and ideas to Michelle. SCHOOL BOARD AGM The School Board AGM will be held on Tuesday 27th February 7.00pm in the Learning Centre. All parents are warmly invited and encouraged to attend the AGM. This is an opportunity to find out more about what happens in our school and contribute to our community consultation which will direct our future school improvement plans. Some of our Board members will be completing their terms so there are vacancies which need to be filled as follows: Shaun Cwill step down after completing a 6 year term. Jenni-Lee C is available for re-nomination after a 4 year term. Prudence H is available for re-nomination after a 4 year term. Lisa O is available for re-nomination after a 4 year term. We have 5-6 vacancies for our School Board. Continuing Board members are: Roger L, Ryan S, Nicole L (P & F rep), Jane Klingner (staff rep), Michelle Miller and Fr Leon Quinn. In this Newsletter you will find a School Board member nomination return slip, to be returned to the school office in an envelope marked CONFIDENTIAL FOR PRINCIPAL. FAITH FORMATION Dear God, During Lent, help us to keep our eyes on Jesus. Help us to spend more time talking and listening to you. Help us to share what we have with others and be sorry for times we have done wrong. Help us to have open hearts and open minds. Amen.

5 LENT The Lenten Season begins this Wednesday. We begin our Lenten Journey with Ash Wednesday. The ashes received on this day will remind us that God is with us as we prepare for Jesus death and resurrection. During Lent we pray for and help others throughout the world who, because of poverty and injustice, do not have the opportunities we have. By giving generously through prayer, going without and showing kindness to others during Lent, we are working towards a fairer world for all. We also look at how we live our lives and work harder to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. As we look forward to the coming of Easter. What aspects of your life can you identify to change in order to be more like Jesus this Lent? What can you Fast From (give up) What actions can you Feast On (take up)? BEGINNING OF YEAR WELCOME MASS AND ASH WEDNESDAY MASS A big thank you to the 4/5 Class and Fr Leon for leading us so beautifully in Mass last Friday. Thank you also to the families who came along and supported the celebration in very warm conditions. This Wednesday Fr Leon and the 6/7 Class will lead us in our Ash Wednesday Mass at 9.30am to mark the beginning of the Lenten Season. We hope you are able to join us. SHROVE TUESDAY Tomorrow, Tuesday 13 th February, we will hold our Ashes Liturgy at 9am under the trees or under the Learning Centre Pergola (depending on the weather). Beforehand in their classes, the students will reflect on ways they can be more loving, caring and forgiving, they will write these Lenten Promises on papers that will be symbolically burnt at the Liturgy. The ashes are then used the next day along with burnt branches from Palm Sunday 2017 to make up the ashes for distribution at the Ash Wednesday Mass the next day. We will acknowledge the tradition of having pancakes on Shrove Tuesday in the morning. Pancakes will be available for a gold coin donation to all students and parents who wish to join us between am. The donations received for the pancakes will go towards our fundraising for Project Compassion. Students are asked to bring in a plastic plate and fork that can be washed after pancakes, we want to avoid using paper plates, help the environment and reduce land-fill at the same time! A big thank you to the parents who are able to assist us with cooking pancakes or providing pancake mixture, toppings or lemons. PROJECT COMPASSION (CARITAS AUSTRALIA) Our main commitment to Almsgiving during Lent is through supporting the Caritas Australia campaign of Project Compassion. In Religion lessons the students learn more about Project Compassion. Each week there is a story that focuses on a person/family and their community who have been assisted by the money we give to Project Compassion. Sometimes the money is spent on starting a farm, building infrastructure, purchasing equipment or education. The goal is always that the recipients can become more self-sufficient and empowered. The focus for this year s Project Compassion is For a Just Future. Our aim as a whole school will be to raise as much money as we can to help purchase as many goats and associated training on how to take care of the them in order to generate a stable source of income for families in Nepal. Each $50 we raise will provide one family in Nepal with a goat and/or the necessary training. Once again this year, each class will help run a fundraising event and your support is greatly appreciated (more details to come). Our parent community are holding the first fundraiser this Lent by cooking pancakes tomorrow to help celebrate Shrove Tuesday. LENT PRAYER We will gather as a school in the Learning Centre for prayer following our morning assembly. This is part of our commitment to Prayer during Lent. We will focus on the importance of Lent to help us see how our kind actions make a difference in our world today. We will also focus on the Sunday Gospel story of the week. Parents are most welcome to join us for this time over the coming weeks (Mon Wk 5, 6 and Tues Wk 4, 7). Many Thanks, Jed Sutter - REC

For the craft table the kids could make two sorts of boxes and decorate with stickers and ribbons. We managed to source a few super-large boxes for the session (special mention to Hunts Crash Repairs, Foodland and Leading Appliances... thank you!). These we filled with balls, pillows and hung stockings inside for the kids to play with. There were also a couple of trays made up with cardboard tubes and rolls to have some fun with ping pong balls - who managed to get the ball rolled through every tube? We had some great helpers today too. Thanks to Maygan and Mandy for coming along to help out with the session. Lots of noise and lots of fun! Thanks for coming along. Next week's session is messy play! We recommend old clothes as there might be opportunities for messiness!
