1 NASH NEWS Inside this issue: Bake Sale and Family Fun Night 2 Vendor Fair Information 2 Late last year our district did a playground equipment audit and restricted the use of current playground equipment to only K-5 grade students. None of the 21 elementary schools within KUSD had equipment that allowed students under five to play on. As a result several schools are adding to their playgrounds through their PTA. We have started the lengthy process of adding equipment that ALL students can enjoy. Our goal is to not only add structures that our 4K students can enjoy, but also our students with special needs. However, this will not come without significant expense. We are looking at a approximately $15,000.00! This will require quite a bit of fundraising, which we are willing to do. WE ALSO NEED YOUR HELP! Because our play areas are utilized by so many in the community, we are asking for everyones help. If you know of local businesses willing to contribute, please let us know. Companies with matching gifts programs are a great resource too! SEPTEMBER Submitted by Mrs. VanBlarcom We are off to a GREAT start in the art room this year! I am so proud of each and every one of our students. They have been hard at work learning about lines, overlapping shapes, creating depth, value, tones, tints, shades, and the characteristics of optical illusions! We have learned about artists Vincent VanGogh, Katsushika Hokusai, Bridget Riley,Mark Kistler, Victor Vasarely, and Piet Mondrian. You can see detailed descriptions of these lessons at ARTSONIA.COM. Thank you to all the parents who have given permission for their children to upload art work already. We have 94% of our students now able to access their very own on line art portfolios! If you have not done so yet, you can go to artsonia.com/permission to grant your child access. I can also grant permission with a written note from you. My goal is to get 100% of our children online! Our words of the week for September: Active Listener, Independent, Initiative, and Mindful! Our words of the week for October: Conscientious, Focus, Perseverance, and Hard Work! Any student with artwork in the 2017 Summer Student Art Show may now pick it up along with their certificates and ribbons in the art room. Watch future newsletters for Artists of the Month, and other award winning art work! Congratulations to DELILAH DELOFF! Delilah was invited to the recent district school board meeting to accept the Mayor s Award for outstanding art work given out at the 2017 Summer Student Art Show! This award has traditionally been given to a high school student. This past summer, the mayor chose Delilah s artwork out of every work of art in the grades K-12 show to be framed and hung in his office for an entire year! She received a giant ribbon, certificate, and will also be given back her framed art work when the year is up. Congratulations, Delilah! We are so proud of you!

3 The 4 th & 5 th graders held a Shop & Share at JCRew on Sunday, October 1 st. It was a HUGE success. We earned $694!! This will help to offset the cost of field trips that are scheduled for the spring. A SPECIAL THANKS goes out to the following kids for coming to help out at the event: Ben Foster, Ben Mikolajczak, Samarea Cook, Teagan and Carter Trowbridge, and Landon, Liam and Lance Donovan. Coffee and light desserts will be available for our guests too! We raised $4,765.20!! This will go towards technology, as well as enhancing our Nash Learning Garden! THANKS to everyone that volunteered or participated!! 4 Friday, October 20th 6p-7p Don t forget to drop off candy donations in the main office. It s not too late! All donations will give you a chance to be entered into a drawing for the book fair! You won t want to miss this years Scholastic Book Fair! We are going to have s more fun than ever before! Bring your family and friends to enjoy the wide variety of books available. NOVEMBER COME READ WITH US! Join us for Nash s family reading night! Come listen to our teachers read stories while you sit in the comfort of your pajamas and favorite snuggle item. We will also have a small art project and this time around you will get to enjoy our Scholastic Book Fair! At the end of the night, stay for the book raffles and a healthy snack to take home.

6 Battle of the Books, or BOB, is a contest that encourages quality reading. Only 4th and 5th graders are able to become team members. Team members read from a list of 30 books chosen by librarians and teachers. Scores are kept and winners are recognized; however, emphasis is placed on working together as a team and the fun of participating in friendly competition. This year's tournament will take place on a Friday afternoon in March here at Nash. Parents may not attend the battles themselves; however, after the battles, there is an awards ceremony and parents are encouraged to attend that and cheer on our team as we find out where we placed as compared to the other teams. (Parents are responsible for transporting their child to and from the battles. The battles will take place at Nash.) The team will consist of 10 members. Between now and October 30th, 4th and 5th graders who are interested are encouraged to read the 30 books. There will be a test on October 30th to determine who qualifies to become part of our BOB team. Those who qualify will meet during lunch and as the battles draw closer, we will have before and/or after school practices to prepare for the tournament in March. The meeting times will be determined based on the availability of those who qualified. If you are in 4th or 5th grade, and would like to become part of the Nash BOB team, then see Cara Gorr in Room 405 for a list of the 30 books as soon as possible so you can get ready! (The books are set aside in the library, so see Mrs. Lunde during your library time to check out the books.) Happy Reading!
