1 St Joseph s Primary School 2018 Term Two Week Eight Newsletter Date Wednesday 6 June 2018 Gayndah Principal s Letter to Parents Dear Parents, Caregivers, Staff and Students BCE REVITALISATION GRANT: There was great excitement around the school yesterday as the new furniture arrived and was delivered to classrooms. The furniture is designed to support flexible learning and provides options for more student choice. This does not mean the students choose where they sit, the teacher may designate an area for the type of learning and student may choose to sit at a table, on the floor, in a bean bag or an ottoman. We are grateful to Brisbane Catholic Education s funding for schools in the Archdiocese to provide 21 st century learning spaces. The learning environment is sometimes referred to as the third teacher. Engaging, adaptable spaces energise students and teachers. The furniture reflects the shift in education from only direct instruction to active learning and an increased attention to personalised learning. There is a greater emphasis on collaborative learning. Classrooms are no longer static for the term or year. All desks are height adjustable and on wheels to provide for flexibility within the learning space. Many staff, students and parents took advantage of the option to buy desk and chairs we are replacing. There are still quite a few available. The funds will be used to purchase extra items for classrooms. The school also donated desks and chairs to Gunther and the C & K. I invite you to come and share the excitement of the students and teachers as they learn how to work collaboratively and creatively in these new spaces. WELLNESS WEEK: A huge thank you to Miss O Connor for the organisation of activities in our wellness week. Children participated in whole school meditation, trying vegetables, supporting Queensland Day, Jump Rope for Heart, Holt Bolt and a disco. Whilst it may seem like fun, and I m sure it was for the learners, the activities are directly linked to the Health and Physical Education Curriculum and Religious Education Curriculum. REPORTING: It is that time of year where teachers are spending much of their own time preparing report cards for learners. Parent teacher interviews are also occurring it has been wonderful to hear of the growth and progress of the learners.

2 The report cards indicate student progress against the Achievement Standard of the Australian Curriculum at this particular point in time. Our reports also reflect our Dispositions of a Learner. Thank you to teachers who spend a great deal of their own time to prepare the reports and to Miss O Connor her role in preparing the reports and collaborating with teachers on the comment banks. If you have any questions about your child s report, please speak in the first instance, with your child s teacher. PARISH SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM Please pray for our children currently preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation in the coming weeks. PREP 2019 ENROLMENTS Prep Enrolments for 2019 are currently being accepted. An interview will be scheduled after parents have submitted the enrolment application. Families who have a child due to commence Prep in 2019, need to submit enrolment applications to ensure a placement for your child. PRAYERS: Please pray for Lisa and Don Brunjes. Don has been in hospital for the last couple of weeks fighting a serious infection. We also keep Heidi Pringle and family in our prayers. LONG SERVICE LEAVE: I will be on Long Service Leave from next Monday, 11 June till the start of Term 3. Miss O Connor will be responsible for the school in my absence and I know you will all support her in this. I wish you all the best for the last three weeks of the term and every blessing for the holidays that follow. Wishing you every blessing for this week, Terese

3 This week, our staff and students are participating in a Wellness Week at school. Given the 11-week duration of the term, it is important that we support our students physical, mental and spiritual health, and whilst we already do this well throughout the school, a particular emphasis has been placed on this during this week. All activities, whilst fun, are connected to our curriculum. Students have and will participate in the following activities: WELLNESS WEEK Meditation Monday Students participated in whole-school meditation Try It Tuesday Student tried a variety of vegies that were on offer at morning tea and lunch. Magic Maroon Moving Day QLD Day Students wore maroon (or blue) to support their footy team. Students have also been preparing classrooms for the arrival of new furniture. Heart Health Thursday Students participated in a Jump Rope for Heart workshop with Miss O Connor Footloose Friday Students encountered the Holt Bolt course. The Holt Bolt obstacle course includes giant inflatable obstacles, vaults, rock climbing walls, an inflatable tunnel, balance beams, spider webs, a foam pit and more. This will take place at Gayndah State School. It is ideal that students have a change of clothes for this, as they may get wet. School Disco: 2-3pm (All families are welcome to attend our school disco)

4 REPORT CARDS The reporting process is well underway with teachers having spent many hours reviewing assessment tasks in order to prepare reports. These reports will go through a reviewing process before being verified by Terese or I. Schools report to parents on student achievement against the relevant achievement standards for each learning area/subject. Reporting is part of communicating with parents and building the school-parent partnership to improve student learning. School reporting processes are clear and transparent for parents, so they understand: the learning expectations for the student the student s achievement against expected standards how well the student is engaging with the expected learning how the student may be able to improve. In addition to providing written reports at least twice a year, our school offers parents opportunities to discuss their child s educational performance at the school with their child s teacher(s). At St Joseph s the process involves a compulsory Parent/Teacher interview at the end of Term Two, followed by an optional interview during Term Three if either teacher or parent feels that this is appropriate. At the end of each semester, teachers make an evidence based judgement about the student s overall level of achievement related to aspects of the achievement standard that have been taught and assessed for each subject. This judgement is based on evidence of student performance and takes into consideration the most recent evidence. The evidence of each student s achievement is collected using a range of assessments aligned to the curriculum and forms the basis for reporting judgments about the student s overall level of achievement in the learning area/subject. ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Timetables and a parent letter went home this week. Please peruse the timetable for Athletics Day. We look forward to the day and seeing you there! Keep smiling Bec
