1 NEWSLETTER Unity Knowledge Respect Term 3 Week 2 July Welcome to Term 3 Looking to the Future I hope all students and their families had a safe and enjoyable break. Our sympathies are extended to the Lisarow High School community on the tragic loss of one of their students. At the end of last term, we held our Leaders Induction Ceremony. Our new School Captains, Tiarna Breen and Benjamin Abolins, were sworn in after making their pledges. The extended Student Leadership Team was also recognised. The occasion was made more special with both the Liberal and Labor candidates for the federal election being in attendance. Leadership from students is developing strongly in our school with, further initiatives in the pipeline that will be explained in the near future. The school looks forward to being led by Tiarna and Ben who have already shown the qualities of strong school captains. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Marika Tults and Nathan Coleman for their excellent service as School Captains. 2 Week 10 of last term was amazingly busy, with a lot of extra-curricula activities taking place: On Monday, a large contingent of students participated in the Zone Athletics Carnival where the positive KMHS spirit was on display and some excellent performances that will be described later on. Tuesday saw another cohort of students attend the Careers Expo Day and this proved to be a valuable experience for many students. Parent / Teacher interviews took place on Wednesday afternoon and this was extremely well attended. On Thursday students in Years 7 and 8 participated in NAIDOC activities to further understand our Indigenous culture and was once again well received by all involved. The last day of term had students from Years 5 and 6 from our partner schools join our Years 7 and 8 students for the annual Gala Day. Many thanks to all involved in the complex organisation of these events that help enrich the educational experience of being at KMHS. 3 KMHS WOLVES SPORTING HIGHLIGHTS A summary of the latest sporting achievements by our students. Rugby Star Congratulations to Dan in Year 12, who after being in the winning team of the Australian School Boys Rugby Championship, was selected in the Australian Barbarians Team. Dan will play against Tonga in September. Well done Dan! We are all so proud of you. Best Foot Forward Congratulations to Lachlan in Year 12. Voted best NSW Rugby Union U18 Country forward of Amazing effort, well played Lachlan! Stellar Softball Players One of our very talented athletes, Nicole in Year 10, recently featured in the Newcastle Star. The article talks about the upcoming Australian Invitational Youth Games, which are expected to inject $500,000 into the region. It is great to see support given to help boost talent in our students. 4 Canteen News KMHS is having a Science Day On Wednesday 17/8/16, the school goes science mad for a day and will have 227 primary school students visiting. 6 Important Opal information from 1 August 2016 From 1 August, magnetic strip tickets (MSTs) will no longer be sold or accepted for travel within the Opal network. For easy access to public transport and lower fares, customers need to plan ahead and acquire the appropriate Opal card before 1 August What other ticketing options will be available for customers from 1 August 2016? Opal is the easiest and cheapest way to get around on public transport, but as a last resort, customers can buy an Adult or Child/Youth Opal single bus ticket on board bus services (excluding prepay services). These are single-use tickets only, valid for travel from the point of purchase. Who is eligible to buy Child/Youth Opal Single Bus Ticket? The eligibility criteria are the same as a Child/Youth Opal card: Ch ild re n a g e d 4 15 years (inclusive) Fu ll tim e NS W/ACT s c h o o l s tu d e n ts a g e d 16 ye a rs a n d o ld e r with a NS W S e n io r S e c o n d a ry S tu d e n t Concession card, issued by their school, as proof of entitlement. NSW/ACT Senior Secondary Student Concession Card School Student Photo IDs will no longer be accepted as from 1 st August Students 16 years and over must carry and show Senior Student Concession Card as shown. See your School Administration for details. Holders of this concession card are entitled to half-price fares and can apply for a Child/Youth Opal card. Eligibility You must be a school student aged 16 or over who is: enrolled in a NSW or ACT secondary school or non-government secondary school, or registered with the Board of Studies as a full-time home-schooled or distance education (OTEN) secondary student. International school students who meet the criteria also get the same entitlements. What should I do if My School Opal Card is Lost or Stolen? Report it online and order a replacement School Opal card and a fee may apply. By doing this, the old School Opal card will be cancelled and a new one will be mailed to the customer's preferred address within 5-7 days.
