Mr Graeme Hight Contact Person Principal s Foreword Introduction Named after Catherine of Siena, the College aims to educate the whole person: intellectually, physically, emotionally and spiritually. The College badge sums up the ethos that Siena seeks to establish and maintain: PRAYER, CARE and LEARNING. Within this context the school community strives to promote and uphold Christian values and to foster and applaud the talents and potential of each student. In the 14 years since its establishment, Siena has developed a reputation for the breadth of its formal curriculum and co-curricula programmes. In line with the mission of a catholic school, a strong emphasis on inclusive education has evolved with subjects catering for a wide variety of student interests and abilities. Students are offered a myriad of co-curricula opportunities in both the visual and performing arts and other cultural activities, sporting teams and access to programmes that offer service to the local and wider community. Student welfare is a high priority at Siena with a well-developed anti bullying program in place as well as structures to ensure that the individual student is known and understood as a person. 2 Curriculum offerings Our distinctive curriculum offerings In the 12 years since its establishment, Siena has developed a reputation for the breadth of its formal curriculum and co-curricula programmes. In line with the mission of a catholic school, a strong emphasis on inclusive education has evolved with subjects catering for a wide variety of student interests and abilities. The College offers subjects that cater for students in both the OP and VET pathways. Year 8 students study core subjects with an element of choice inn Year 9. The Year 10 curriculum provides a transition to the Senior Phase of Learning and a school-based review team's recommendations in relation to this have been adopted. The image of scaling a wall from Year 10 to encounter Senior studies in Years 11 has been replaced by the image of a ramp, which students gradually ascend during Year 10 and arrive at the top of by the beginning of Year 11. This was initially introduced in 2008 with the adoption of term length units of subjects like Chemistry, Physics, Biology rather than the generic Science. A review of the structure indicated that students were still being exposed to too many subjects and the number was reduced to give each subject more time and therefore depth of study as well as reducing the assessment workload on students. An extension elective is offered to students in Year 10. This unit is designed to engage students who would benefit from extension beyond the usual curriculum for their year level and is made up of the following topics: Thinking about Thinking! - this unit examines what we know about the human brain, how it works and how we learn. Students are encouraged to learn to think creatively outside the square. "Program Achieve" Mentorship program students are be matched with a mentor Extra curricula activities Cultural: Instrumental music for individual instruction in Woodwind, Guitar, Percussion, Strings, Piano and Vocals College Show Band, Concert Band and/or Strings Ensemble. Two dance teams in the Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod with one receiving a highly commended Choir, including participation in the Sunshine Coast Vocal Eisteddfod. Debating teams and Public Speaking competitions. Academic: Tournament of the Minds Maths Challenge for Young Australians Readers Cup and Literature Circle Headstart programme at the University of the Sunshine Coast. ASX sharemarket game. Future Problem Solving competition 3rd place in Australia in. Extreme Science Experience and Girls Solving It Maths/Science/Technology competition Service: Caritas fundraising,40 Hour Famine,Qld Cancer Society s Relay for Life, Queensland Youth Parliament Sport: Years 8 and 9 participate in fixtures in school time on Wednesday afternoons. The sports involved are: Girls: Touch, Soccer, Volleyball, Cricket, Basketball, Netball Boys Touch Soccer Volleyball Cricket Basketball Rugby League Sports played outside of school time are in local school competitions and include: Basketball boys and girls, Netball, Rugby League, Rugby Union girls and boys, Soccer boys and girls. 3 How Information and Communication Technologies are used to assist learning A comprehensive wireless network allows students access to the school network from any point in the College. Three traditional computer rooms are supplemented by five mobile banks of laptop computers. Other rooms with significant numbers of PCs are Graphics all work is done on computer - Media Studies, the Library and the Independent Learning Centre. Each teaching space in the College has either a digital projector and screen or a large flat screen TV to further assist with digital and on-line learning and substantial use is made of Clickview. All staff have laptop computers. Significant progress is being made in the teaching of cyber-awareness to students. Every student has their own address at Siena which allow for the sending of files to allow access from home and also submission of draft and final assessment to teachers. Much use is made of GPS units, GIS, data loggers, internet searches, Graphics programs such as AutoCad, Inventa and Revit and many multi-media programs. Social climate Siena is known for the "Siena Spirit" which is developed through a strong commitment to the "Prayer" and "Care" elements of the school ethos and is characterised by the positive students/staff relationships. A strong pastoral focus on students is generated through the vertical House Group system and the provision of a Year Co-ordinator each Year Level. Additionally, Year 8 students are assigned a Year 12 Buddy from their House group who assists them with the transition to secondary school. These systems and people ensure students are known and "tracked" as they move through the school. They are supplemented by a full time Counsellor and trained Year 11/12 Peer Support students and a strong focus on positive relations using a Shared Responsibility Process. Each Year level has yearly Retreat or Outdoor Education programme. All Year 8-10 study Personal and Social Development Education as a core subject and Year 10 undertake Community Assistance for one afternoon per week for a term. The programs Beautiful Siena Women and Worthy Siena Men are undertaken by all year levels. A Student Representative Council exists for Years A strong social justice is evident in the school with yearly fundraising for many charities - eg, Caritas, the Cancer Society's Relay for Life and the 40 Hour famine as well as a Fiji immersion experience and involvement in a number of community initiatives such as Smith family Reader to reader mentoring program. Parent, student and teacher satisfaction with the school In, Brisbane Catholic Education commissioned a Who s Coming to School Today survey which sought the opinions of Year 9 and Year 12 students, parents and staff on a wide range of aspects of Catholic schooling, including Religious Identity and Faith Formation, Teaching and Learning, Student Wellbeing and Relationships with Parents, Care-givers and the Local Community. At least 90 of those surveyed consistently agreed/strongly agreed with affirming statements in relation to Siena s performance in all of these areas. These figures match those of parents, staff and students who respond to School Renewal surveys. Siena does not advertise for enrolment but continues to be a high demand school. A common theme heard by staff involved in enrolment interviews is that the prospective families know of several other families who have children at Siena and both the children and parents speak highly of what Siena offers. Two areas of named strength are a strong sense of community and a holistic education that is student focussed. 3
