We have a current enrolment of approximately 210 students, in 10 learning groups. St Sebastian's School provides a safe and welcoming community where relationships are valued and supported through the pastoral care of all. We have an active parent community who support our school educationally, financially, socially. The school also works closely with our local parish and its community. St Sebastian s School has been operating as a high quality, inclusive, coeducational Catholic school for 80 years. Our beautiful school setting reflects the high standard we aim to achieve in all key learning and teaching areas. St Sebastian's School drives a strong improvement agenda, encouraging the progress of all students. As a school community, we are very proud of our excellence in learning and teaching that reaches out to educate each child, not only academically and physically but socially, emotionally and spiritually in a caring Catholic environment. 2 Characteristics of the student body St Sebastian's School has an inclusive coeducational enrolment policy. The school predominantly draws students from families living in the local area with a smaller number attending who live in outer suburbs but their parent/s work in towards the city. The student population has 37 students who have English as a Second Language and 5 students verified with a disability. Most students completing Year 6 attend: Girls - Our Lady's College, Annerley and All Hallow's School, Brisbane Boys - St Laurence's College, South Brisbane (at the end of Years 4 and 6) Social climate St Sebastian's School implements a social well-being program throughout all year levels. ' Program Achieve - You Can Do It Education!' introduces students to the 5 Keys for Success - Getting Along, Confidence, Organisation, Persistence and Resilience. Through this positive approach to relationships, bullying issues are named and addressed in our policy. Students are encouraged to "talk about it". The formation of Class Covenants and Circle Time facilitate this attitude. Our school Behaviour Plan also reinforces the teaching of positive behaviours and mind-frames. These programs give a framework to the other regular school activities such as Buddies, Inter-school sport, our Leadership Program for Years 5 and 6, assemblies that address our beliefs and values, school rules and our Vision for Learners and Learning. The school week begins with a prayer session in our school chapel where the school community reflects on the gospel reading for the week and how it is relevant to us today. Our school theme for 2017 is We Celebrate Every Opportunity and is taken from the book 'Beautiful Opps!' It is used as a resource for bringing the school community together with a common focus for the year. Curriculum - our distinctive offerings At St Sebastian s School we focus on providing challenging and stimulating learning experiences and opportunities that enable all students to explore and build on their talents. We implement the learning areas, general capabilities and cross curricula priorities of the Australian Curriculum. We also offer: An extensive music, choir and performance program as well as an instrumental music program Chess Lessons and an annual chess tournament Participation in Opti-Minds Challenge Participation in The Young ICT Explorers Challenge Participation in Catholic, District and State sporting events. Interschool Sport competition Swimming, Skipping and Ballroom Dancing programs Close links with the local RSL e.g., Leading the community in the local Anzac Day march; Support for the Parish Sacramental Program An excursion to Sydney and Canberra for our Year 5/6 students every two years Extensive leadership program for our Year 5 and 6 students based on servant leadership ANNUAL SCHOOL REPORT

3 Curriculum - our extra curricula activities St Sebastian's School offers: Instrumental music lessons Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) and Vacation Care on our school site Private chess lessons Private speech and drama lessons Support of the Parish Sacramental Program Support of the local chapter of St Vincent De Paul, Catholic Mission, Caritas and the Sisters of St Joseph's Before School Run Club and Athletics Development Club St Sebastian's School participates in yearly internal review Parent, student and teacher satisfaction St Sebastian's School participates in yearly internal reviews. Members of the school community - teachers, staff, students and parents are interviewed and are given the opportunity to participate through surveys. From these surveys it is evident that St Sebastian's School has noteworthy involvement from the Parish Priest, teachers, staff and parents. The school has a very active and supportive P&F. Enthusiasm from these groups for the work of the school, the relationships formed and support given, is strongly evident. The P&F social functions are based around supporting our school strategic renewal plan. Our resourcing goals have been achieved especially in the technology area. 4 SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENTS Achievements against 2017 annual plan Mission and Religious Education: A Catholic perspective to curriculum was investigated and staff were introduced to how it can be linked to learning and teaching. The communication of these links to our parish and parent community enhances our Catholic Identity. Partnerships between the school and the wider community is strengthened with the participation in the Brisbane City Council s Active School Travel Program. The Parish and the wider community are invited and represented at our fete. Learning and Teaching: Student data, Review and Response meetings and Learning Walks and Talks give feedback to improve teaching and learning. Effective and expected teaching strategies are used in all classrooms. Teaching and learning is visible through the use of learning intentions and success criteria in all classrooms. Digital and design technologies are implemented to enhance learning. All Professional practice and development leads to collaborative relationships between and across cluster schools. The PD aligns with the high yield strategies. Communication with parents and the community is enhanced through website improvement, use of the Parent Portal and the school Facebook page. Future outlook In 2018, St Sebastian's aims to strengthen our Catholic Identity across our community. This will be done as we embed a Catholic perspective through learning and teaching and align the religious life of the school to our RE curriculum units. Relationships will continue to be built with the wider parish community by students belonging to the parish choir and mass and liturgies celebrated at school each semester. Excellent learning and teaching will promote and grow student engagement, progress and achievement. The focus is on the use of high yield strategies. Effective and expected practices will be embedded within the classrooms and professional development will focus on the smart goal around improving reading and writing. Plans and resources promote and reflect a sustainable future. Throughout our school collaborative and inclusive practices will reflect students learning needs and enhance student and staff wellbeing. Children who arrive late at school, or leave early from school, are required to be signed in/out at the school office, by their parent/caregiver. Mid morning, the secretary will run a report to check for any unexplained absences. The parent then receives an SMS to say we have an unexplained absence for their child. This reminds the parent to contact the school with an explanation for their child s absence. A follow up call will be made if the school does not get a response.
