The assembly allowed us to acknowledge those students who are prepared to take on an additional responsibility to improve the life of students at the college. The number of students involved was terrific and showed the interest of the students to put in extra to their college. Thanks are extended to Ms Verma for her organisation and to the team of helpers on the day. Swimming Carnivals Friday March 3 rd saw the school relocate to Croydon Outdoor Pool for our annual swimming sports. The weather was warm but it was a great day for swimming. Thanks to all the parents who supported the day and to Brock Mason and his team for their organisation and to all the staff who ensured the day ran smoothly. We had a large contingent of students who followed this up on Tuesday 7 th March at the District Swimming, where we won the Junior Division. Well done to all the students who attended. Japanese sister school visit Students from our sister school have arrived and will be introduced at a whole college assembly on Wednesday 15 th March. They will depart at the end of this term after visiting a range of places including the Penguin Parade. College Council AGM The Annual General meeting of Monbulk College Council will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday March 22 nd. At this meeting the college will present its Annual Report. All parents are welcome to attend. Please let the office know if you wish to attend so that we can set up additional seating. Twilight Open Evening Wednesday 29 th March is the college s Open Evening and a number of students have been asked to participate in activities both in the rooms and as tour guides. The evening runs from 6.00pm to 7.20pm and then moves to the theatre from 7.30pm. Students involved in any events will need to arrive prior to 6.00pm. 2 Compass: Absences & Approvals To improve attendance monitoring, we are enabling an automatic to be sent to families indicating that their child has been recorded as Not Present at the College to be sent by 11:00am. We trialed this in 2016 and will be starting this again as of 20/3/17, and feedback is welcomed. Please be reminded, that if your child is absent or going to be absent, we request that you enter their absence/approval on the Compass Parent Portal. There are practices on during the school holidays but no practice on ANZAC DAY (25th April). Please make sure the final payment for the Deb is paid by Wednesday 29th March at the general office. Girls $150, Boys $200. Butterfly Cakes Ingredients 90g butter, softened ½ cup caster sugar 2 eggs, beaten 1 cup

Preheat oven to 180 C 3. Cream butter and sugar 4. Add eggs gradually 5.

Spoon mixture into patty pans 8. Bake for 15 20 minutes or until pale brown. 9.

Cut top in half. Place on top of cream to look like wings.

5 Food Technology News Year 7C students are enjoying their time in the kitchen and are developing some great skills. They enjoyed making and eating their butterfly cakes. Butterfly Cakes Ingredients 90g butter, softened ½ cup caster sugar 2 eggs, beaten 1 cup SR flour ½ teaspoon vanilla essence 2 Tbsp milk Method 1. Collect ingredients 2. Preheat oven to 180 C 3. Cream butter and sugar 4. Add eggs gradually 5. Add Vanilla Essence 6. Add flour and milk alternatively, 1/3 at a time 7. Spoon mixture into patty pans 8. Bake for minutes or until pale brown. 9. Cool Cakes. Cut a circle from the top of each cake. Fill the hole with jam and cream. Cut top in half. Place on top of cream to look like wings. Year 10 students have been investigating food preservation and made some home-made preserves. Ashleigh is holding her gourmet hamburger with fresh home-made tomato sauce. 5

Maths News Students in Year 10 Advance are studying Linear Equations. They have been working with solving equations and drawing graphs.

Engineers and Architects along with many other fields use linear equations and other mathematical models as the tool or strategy in their work.

The parabola is also under discussion in the movie Hidden Figures which is currently at the movie theatres and a highly recommended film for all students to see from both the lovely mathematics

Graphs are drawn to look at trends in financial matters or can be used as a model of a real world situation. Engineers and Architects along with many other fields use linear equations and other mathematical models as the tool or strategy in their work. Later in the year the students will study non-linear graphs such as the parabola which is the trajectory of a football when kicked towards the goals. The parabola is also under discussion in the movie Hidden Figures which is currently at the movie theatres and a highly recommended film for all students to see from both the lovely mathematics involved but also the history and challenges of the early sixties. Thanks to the students in Ms. Ditchfield s Maths class for the photos. English News Joel McKerrow Incursion Elysia Mietzcke 8B: I would definitely recommend it to others in Year 8 next year because he made us love poetry more. He told us some very inspirational poems and he taught us that poetry is just another way to express your feelings. He was so inspiring and had something special in him. Gary Ross 8B: Joel McKerrow was really inspiring. At first, I didn t like the sound of it (poetry), but he really changed my mind by the end of the session. It was just amazing how he could just make a poem out of anything someone said. Poetry has changed some peoples lives and could probably change yours!!! 9
