1 Walters Jr. High School Newsletter As we turn the corner of the academic school year and get closer to June, I want to encourage students and parents to communicate May, June & Summer 2018 Principal s News Brian W. Please be mindful of testing in May (5/7-5/18), and ensure your child gets plenty of rest and a good breakfast. Testing for Smarter Balance, CAASPP (California Assessment for Student Performance and Progress in the subjects of English and Math) will be for 7 th and 8 th grade. Science testing will only be for 8 th grade. Walters is focusing on meaningful lessons, staff collaboration, and technology to guide our students to be college and career ready. An important part to the success of our students is you, the parent. Please be involved at Walters. Please think about next year and participate in PTSA, SSC, ELAC, as well as many other important committees. Thanks to everyone who attended our Open House in March. It was a very informative night for all who attended. It helped parents and community to get more familiar with Walters. Walters will continue construction this summer and through next school year. Ground breaking for the three new buildings was 5/1. We look forward to adding classrooms, and welcoming sixth grade to our campus the start of the 2019/20 school year. I often take the time to reflect on my eighth year as principal at Walter Junior High. Excitement enters my mind as I think of the wonderful students, parents, and staff I work with here. I thank all of you who make this school a great place to learn. I look forward to the PTSA celebration for our qualifying eight graders at Swiss Park on 6/8 (5-7PM). Eighth graders have worked hard to be prepared for their next challenge at high school. It s an honor to be part of their education. Sincerely, Brian W. 2 Assistant Principal s News A big thanks to all in our community who continue to support a positive and safe learning environment here at Walters. We appreciate the hard work and dedication of our amazing teachers and staff and our parents who are teaming up to help our students succeed. The more connected we are, the stronger we will be! As we near the end of the school year let s keep our focus on academic, behavior, and attendance expectations at school. Now is a good time to review our school agenda for details on dress code and cell phone use. With the changing weather, we need students to continue making good decisions about dressing for school. Cell phones must remain in the off position from the 8:10 AM bell until the last bell of the school day. Technology use in classrooms, the library, and computer lab should be limited to course curriculum and extension activities. Please be aware of qualification criteria for 8 th grade activities and other reward events. There is a section in this newsletter with updated details regarding these celebrations. We are committed to recognizing our students for showing respect, making good decisions and solving problems. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events, especially the Talent Show and Awards Night! Be sure to check the school calendar and save the dates! Therefore, we extend the opportunity for all 8 th grade students to fully participate in end of the year activities. These activities consist of; the 8 th grade all day field trip and the 8 th grade PTSA sponsored celebration (at Swiss Park). BUY A 2018 YEARBOOK! It's almost the end of the school year! Celebrate this time with a unique yearbook! There are limited quantities of the 2018 yearbooks still available. While the online system is closed now, you can still order the $40 yearbook with Ms. Yuen (cash or check) in Room 12. Guarantee your child a book in June--order now. Books will be distributed June 8 at lunch. Don't be left without one Registration for next school year took place in February and March. By now you should have turned in your purple, or gold elective selection form with the proper proof of residency and proof of the state required T-dap immunization for incoming 7 th graders. If you have not done so, please get this in immediately as your student is not registered until we have everything. Planning on moving this summer? You will need to take proof of residency (after you have moved) to the school in the area in which you move whether it is in Fremont or another city. The new school will inform us of the move and we will forward the records when we return in mid- August. If you know of anyone who needs to register a new student to Walters Jr. High from another school district please inform them that they can pick up a registration packet from the district office during the summer, Monday-Thursday only or they can wait until our office reopens in mid-august. California Law (AB 354) requires an additional immunization called Tdap in order for your student to advance into or enter 7 th grade. The adolescent whooping cough/pertussis booster shot, (Tdap) must be given on or after age 7 to meet this requirement. Valid proof must show: 1) type of shot given, 2) date, 3) provider s signature/stamp. Provide your proof to Walters Jr. High School BEFORE Maze day, so your registration isn t delayed. If parents have not provided proof to their Jr. High school by the first day of school, August 29, 2018, your student will NOT be allowed to attend. STUDENT ABSENCES ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL (August 29, 2018) Students are expected to be in school the first day of the school year. Students who have not attended the first day of school will be dropped at the end of the day, except in cases of illness for which the school has been previously informed. In cases of illness, parents/guardians must contact the school immediately.

English will be May 8-12 and Math will be May Science will be given on May These will take place during your student s ENGLISH, MATH or SCIENCE class. We will be on a block schedule for most of these days. See below for more detail. Please make note of the testing schedule when making medical and dental appointments. This will prevent your student from having to do make up testing during their regular class time. Medications must be picked up by a parent or guardian unless your student is authorized (current contract on file) to self-carry his/her medication. Blank medication order forms will be provided to you at the time of pick up to be completed for next year. These can also be found on the Fremont Unified School District website. If your student is attending summer school the medication (to include the doctor s order) must be picked up the last day of school. Then it needs to be taken to the summer school site on the first day of summer school by the parent/guardian. Please make sure the medication does not expire prior to July 31, On the last day of summer school, the student s medication must be picked up by the parent/guardian at the summer school site. SCHOOL ACCOUNTABILITY REPORT CARD (SARC) "Federal and state laws require school districts to make accountability reports available to the public online. Accountability report information is based on data and information from the previous year. Dates will run one year behind. We are pleased to inform you that our district's School Accountability Report Cards (SARCs) are available in English, Spanish, and/or Chinese, as required. You may view the SARCs on the Fremont Unified School District web site at under Resources & Contacts/School Reports, or by visiting your school office. To answer any questions regarding the SARCs, there are designated personnel available at each school site.
