Miss Ryan has put a lot of work into preparing both events, even doing some extra early morning training with the students for two days per week, along with Miss de Vries. I thank them sincerely for this. The Year 4-6 Carnival will take place from , and the Junior Fun Day from Please come and cheer along the children on the day! COLLABORATIVE LEARNING PROJECT Miss Eastman, Mrs Pavlinovich, Mr Shaw and myself are away in Perth on Monday and Tuesday of this week attending the first two days of training for 2017 on this system initiative. The implementation of this project has been taking place over the past two years at St Joseph s as we have been focusing on ways to enhance the teaching and learning of Literacy across the school. An important element of the project has been the collecting of data on every student, and then analysing this data to provide a precise program to meet each student s Literacy needs. The two other Catholic schools in Kalgoorlie, St Mary s and John Paul College are also participants in this project. ST JOSEPH S MASS & FAIR My thanks to all parents who supported our annual feast day last Friday. The mass at the start of the day focused on remembering the importance of St Joseph as the patron saint of our school, and praising him through prayer and song. The second element of the day, the Fair, engaged children in fundraising for those who are less fortunate than ourselves. This is an important part of our Christian Mission and Service. It was fantastic to see so many parents involved in our special day. On behalf of the students and staff, thank you! LENTEN PRACTICE Fasting is one of the three focus areas that the children have been taught about during the Lenten season, with the other two being alms-giving and prayer. A traditional aspect of fasting for many Catholic families has been giving up meat on Fridays, and this is something that I have asked Mrs King to promote through the canteen. As a child, and then growing up, I remember that Friday evenings in Lent were times when we shared fish and chips and were reminded that, by doing something as simple as refraining from eating meat on a Friday, we were being spiritually strengthened. This is possibly something that you, as a family, might be able to take part in, in the lead up to Easter. Humphrey s Dance Next week, our students from Pre-Primary to Year Six are taking part in the Humphrey s Dance Program as part of their physical education program. Students will need to wear their sport uniform all week in order to take part in these lessons. The week will culminate in a Dance Disco on Friday afternoon showcasing what the children have learnt; Pre Primary to Year Three from pm and Year Four to Six from pm. BUILDING PROGRAM Following a meeting with the architect and builder last Thursday, it appears likely that the practical completion date for the building works will be the end of Week 1 of Term 2 (Friday April 28), with the children having their first day in the new classrooms on Monday May 1. This timeline will be confirmed as we move closer to the end of this term. PRINCIPAL LEAVE I will be commencing four weeks of leave from Monday, March 27 until Friday, May 5, and will be travelling overseas with my wife. 2 CURRICULUM NEWS THREE WAY INTERVIEWS Three-Way Interviews will take place during Week Ten, from Monday 3 rd April until Thursday 6 th April. We will be having an early close on Wednesday 5 th April, for interviews to commence at 12:30pm. A letter was sent home recently to each child from Pre-Primary to Year Six, indicating the times that your child s teacher is available. All parents should have now returned their preference form if you haven t, please do so immediately. Teachers will send home confirmed interview times this week, if they haven t already. These times will also be placed outside your child s classroom on Monday 27 th March. Three-Way Interviews provide your child with the opportunity to share their thoughts, as the learner, about how they are progressing. Students will share a number of work samples with you and receive feedback from their parent and teacher. These interviews provide yourself, your child and your child s teacher with a chance to reflect on your child s learning this term and set goals for Term Two. ST JOSEPH S DAY Last Friday, we celebrated St Joseph s Day as a school community. We celebrated the feast day of our patron St at a lovely mass in the morning, led by Father Matthew. After lunch, a huge number of parents and community members joined the students in our annual St Joseph s Day Fair. There was much excitement, fun and high spirits throughout the afternoon. Our children and parents enjoyed stalls such as the Chocolate Toss, Photo Booth, Treasure Hunt, Hairspray and many more. I would like to particularly acknowledge Miss Eastman and our teachers who organised the fair and thank our parent volunteers for assisting at the stalls, donating products and in the supervision of small groups of children. The children raised a total of $ for Caritas. It was an outstanding day and certainly a highlight on the school calendar thus far. NAPLAN Students in Years Three and Five will sit various National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests from Tuesday 9 th May until Thursday 11 th May. The tests will be Language Conventions, including spelling, plus Writing on 9 th May, Reading on 10 th May and finally Numeracy on 11 th May. A letter explaining the testing and an Information for Parents pamphlet were sent home recently with all students in Years Three and Five. I will provide more information regarding NAPLAN testing at our school in the newsletter closer to the date. If you have any questions regarding NAPLAN testing, please see your child s class teacher. Mr Luke Shaw Assistant Principal RELIGIOUS EDUCATION YEAR FIVE AND SIX CLASS MASS Our Year Five and Six students will lead Mass in All Hallows Church next Thursday 30th March at 9:30am. All parents of Year Five and Six students are invited to attend this mass. STATIONS OF THE CROSS Parents are invited to join their child/ren as each class reflects on the Stations of the Cross in Week Ten. 3 EDUCATION IN FAITH EDUCATION IN FAITH WATER SPORTS DAYS Prayer for peace: one family Lord God, Father of all. We, your children, are all members of the same human family, your family. We implore you to help us to accept your peace, To be at peace with ourselves and to live in peace with others. Help us to be more understanding and compassionate when dealing with others, To be ready to forgive when wronged, To be willing to love when hurt and To strive for harmony and peace when threatened. Eternal Father, in your mercy, hear our prayer And grant us your everlasting peace. Amen. Today is Harmony Day a day that reminds us that we all belong. It is about inclusiveness and respect. It is rather timely that it falls into our Church s time of Lent, where many of our students are learning about compassion, and the message Love your neighbour. Our neighbour is our family, those that we see every day, people in the community, and all humanity. Compassion starts with understanding, our similarities and our differences, and then accepting and celebrating these. We all find it hard at times to accept other people s differences. It is so easy to question why they are different, and expect them to change and fit the mould. Though it is these differences, this diversity that makes our community, our country, our world such an amazing place. So like the students, I am practising my understanding, my compassion and celebrating our differences on this day, and throughout Lent. Through practise I know I am growing my heart. JUNIOR WATER FUN DAY On Thursday afternoon the Years 1-3 students are participating in the Junior Water Fun Day at the Oasis Recreation Centre from 1:00pm-3.00pm. I look forward to joining in with the children in what promises to be a fun-filled day. I would like to thank our very generous parent helpers who are more than happy to get into the pool and assist the children. We appreciate all of your efforts. Please remember to bring your MAD Volunteer card on the day so we may stamp it. SWIMMING CARNIVAL This Thursday, our Years 4-6 students participate in the St Joseph s School Senior Swimming Carnival. The carnival is held at the Oasis Recreation Centre, with the first race beginning at 9.00am. This event forms part of our teaching and learning program and therefore attendance is compulsory. I ask all parents to ensure their children are provided with a healthy lunch and a variety of healthy snacks to keep them sustained throughout the day. At the conclusion of the event, we are holding the Golden Flipper race, a relay race between the staff, students and parents, so please bring your bathers and your enthusiasm with you on the day. 8 Calling all St Joe s Soccer players! St Joe s Soccer club has merged with Boulder City to become Boulder City Joey s! Registrations are now open for all junior age groups (U6 to U13) for the 2017 season. Preseason training and registration days are currently being held each Sunday at Usher Park from 11am. An informal training session for all age groups, scratch matches and sausage sizzle plus committee members will be on hand to assist you in the registration process are all part of the fun! If your child wants to play soccer in 2017 please complete a registration form and bring it down on Sunday. An online registration also needs to be completed a walkthrough guide to completing this is also attached to this . We will have a computer available at the clubrooms each Sunday to assist those who experience any difficulties in completing the online registration. Please note: Fees do not need to be paid immediately in order to register, though payment must be made before the end of March. If you have any questions regarding the 2017 Junior Soccer season, please feel free to contact Gavin Carrol or Casey Hill Alternatively, become a member of the Boulder City Joey s Facebook page!
