These students participated in this activity as part of our Extension Education program. Thank you to Ed Schaepman for organising and coordinating this activity and to the parents who transported and supported our students. Congratulations to the Festival Singers and Jazz Band who will be performing in a local Animato schools music festival on Thursday morning this week. Parents and friends are welcome to attend and enjoy the performances at St Bede s Primary School (Church Hall) commencing at 10.30am. Our Prep students have commenced the Term with lots of singing and dancing celebrating Summertime. We look forward to the Prep students sharing and performing their new routines and songs at our Friday afternoon assembly this week at 2.30pm. Parents are very welcome to attend all our assemblies and most Friday afternoon assemblies include a performance aspect. School Planning / Enrolments 2018 We are well and truly into planning for the 2018 school year. Along with that comes some very big decisions around staffing, classes and the breadth and types of programs we can offer. Our funding is related directly to the number of students we have at the school. If you know that your children will not be returning to Deepdene in 2018 could you please put this in writing addressed to me and hand it in to the office as soon as possible. If we plan, for instance, on having 450 students at the school and have planned classes and staffing around that number only to find 6-8 children have not returned (which may be only two or three families), this can have a very big impact on the schools finances, particularly on the staffing side of the school budget. Thank you to those families who have already informed me of a change of circumstances in The planning process associated with the development of class structures and class groups also includes an opportunity for parents to contribute relevant information pertaining to the placement of their children for the following school year. It is not a pick your class teacher or pick your class group option but rather it is an opportunity for you to provide any relevant social, emotional and educational information that you would like the school to take into account when the class groups are being formed. The development of class structures and class groups is quite a complex activity carried out each year and every effort is made to fully satisfy the following criteria: Gender Balance Mixed ability groups Social groups Effective class sizes and teaching teams continued on page 2 1

Please note that children are not asked to nominate friends for grouping purposes. Friendship groups are taken into account but we also endeavour to provide the children with the opportunity to extend friendship groups each year. If you have any relevant information that you would like taken into consideration for 2018 please submit this information to me in writing by Monday, 13th November. Unfortunately it is not always possible to satisfy all requests but every effort is made to take into account as many different considerations as possible. Please do not assume that we can also recall information that has been submitted in previous years. Each year is a new scenario and as such the information gathering is also an important part of our annual planning processes. Pupil Free Day A reminder to all school families that Monday, November 6th is a pupil free day. Teachers will be commencing the task of moderating children s work samples, completing assessments and writing the end of year student reports. Working Bee Spring has arrived! We have scheduled an after school working bee so as to not interfere with sporting and other family commitments during the weekend. Please see the flier that was sent home to all families as a hardcopy. If you can help out with some weeding and gardening for an hour after school pick up on Thursday, November 2nd it would be greatly appreciated. World Teachers Day Internationally World Teachers Day is celebrated on October 5 th but as this date generally falls during (Australian) school holidays we celebrate World Teachers Day on the last Friday in October. I am fortunate to work with a professional, dedicated and hard working group of people who always have student learning at the fore front of everything we do. They play their part in making our community the great community it is. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for the work they do it is very much appreciated. 3 SCHOOL NEWS A wonderful and entertaining day was enjoyed by students and staff at our Fête de la Musique last Wednesday. Merci beaucoup to our performers, dancers, leaders, technicians, photographers, Parents Association and to all those staff and students who dressed in the colours of the le drapeau français and participated with enthusiasm. À bientôt! Mme Raspa et Mme Stephens All the performers were excellent! Everyone enjoyed the dance we were taught by Ciara and Charlotte. Kaitlin 5C I really enjoyed listening to all the different instruments. Sienna 5C I was a performer at Fête de la Musique and I really enjoyed playing to multiple audiences. Mayan 5C The thing I most enjoyed was the pain chocolat. The performers were incredible and the decorations were so pretty. Claire 5M 3

5 SCHOOL NEWS Five students (Andrew, Minh, Sophie, John and Justin) participated in the Chess Vic Semi Final on Tuesday, 24th November at Great Ryrie Primary School. They did very well. Out of a total of 24 schools, our school came equal first at 25.5 points with Preston Primary School. They have earned a spot at the Finals to be held on 8th November at Balwyn North Primary School (TBC) In addition, Sophie attended the State Finals Primary Girls on 17th Oct at Lauriston Girls School. Deepdene qualified an incredible total of 9 students through to the EMR Athletics Carnival which was held Thursday October 19th at Bill Sewart Athletics Track. Students competed in a range of events that they have excelled in throughout the previous carnivals this year. All of the results were very impressive with many personal bests being beaten and more than a few medals being received. There were two standout results in particular with Isaac S. from Level 5 qualifying through to the State Championships in the Triple Jump, and Isaac B. from Level 6 qualifying through to the State Championships in the High Jump. We wish these two students all the best of luck for the next round and congratulations again to all students who participated! Tristan Schwaiger This year is the 13th year of the annual Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge. Congratulations to the 104 students from Deepdene Primary School, who completed the 2017 Challenge. They were presented with their Certificate of Achievement this week which was signed by past and present Premiers of Victoria. We hope that parents will encourage their children to take part in the VPRC next year. WHO? It is for all Victorian students from Prep to Year 10, including students who learn at home. WHY? The Challenge aims to promote a love of reading. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read at least a certain number of books for the year if not more. Happy Reading! WHEN?
