7 Valuable Learner of the Month February RISK TAKER Chanel Mulipola 56E Reason: Chanel has moved learning centres and completely moved out of his comfort zone this year. He actively participates in every activity and is willing to share his ideas and take on advice and feedback from his peers. Chanel is taking more risks in putting himself out there by applying for new groups and leadership positions. He is always willing to give everything his best effort and is willing to make constructive mistakes to further his learning. Sustainable Schools Committee At Silverton we have a Sustainable Schools Committee. Members include the Environment Captains, teachers from each learning centre and specialist area, management and OSHCare. We would also like members from our school community to be on board. If you are interested in helping our school become more sustainable please contact the office and leave your contact details and I will be in touch. Looking forward to working with you Emmanuelle Blake Environment Club Grape Harvest
8 #SSS Whole School House Day Our whole school #SSS wellbeing house day was a great success. Students participated in different activities around the school in their house colours. All of the activities were focused on resilience, team work and promoting our wellbeing program, #SSS. The students learnt about the #SSS mascots Fred and Fiona Feelings, what the green, yellow and red represent for our program and how to use a #SSS brain break to reset and get ready to learn. Students designed a stone to demonstrate a positive feeling they felt throughout the day or a representation of the #SSS program. These stones will be painted and placed as a permanent sidewalk in our school. Students were heard talking about the day and our school This is the best day ever. And I love our school so much.
9 Sustainability at Silverton At Silverton we are working towards becoming a sustainable school. This means that we are trying to reduce our energy and water usage and the rubbish that we produce at school. We are part of the Resource Smart School s Program and our goal is to become more sustainable by saving energy and water, reducing our waste and increasing our biodiversity. If we can do this we will become a Five Star School, the first in our area. We are currently at three star status despite having completed all four modules. To become a Five Star school we also need to reach certain benchmarks for reducing water, energy and waste and increasing biodiversity. We have reached the benchmark for water and biodiversity but not for energy and waste. Targeting Waste At Silverton we are producing one of the highest levels of rubbish in the state when compared to schools within our population range in the Resource Smart Program. We need to reduce our waste and we need your help. The fastest and most effective way to do this is for students to bring rubbish free lunches to school. Rubbish free lunches don t have any packaging. For example instead of wrapping sandwiches in cling wrap, place directly into a reusable container. Instead of sending chips and chocolate bars for snacks, send fresh fruit, vegetables, muffins, dip, yoghurt and biscuits in reusable containers. There are several great rubbish free lunch boxes on the market that have compartments for all different types of foods. Our students at Silverton bring some fantastic lunches to school and it s great to see that most come in reusable containers. However most of the rubbish being generated by volume comes from plastic packaging from snacks eaten at recess. Chip packets, chocolate bars, dry noodles snacks, muesli bars, to name a few. In addition students are buying many packaged items from the canteen. The amount of these snack foods being eaten on a daily basis is of great concern. Not only do these foods generate so much rubbish, they have very little nutritional value and can result in excess weight gain and the high sugar content reduces students ability to concentrate. Alternately fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, yogurt, dips, homemade muffins etc. provide children with the energy and nutrients that their growing bodies need.
10 Rubbish Bin Audit Last October students from the Rubbish Pick UP Team carried out a waste audit of our bins at school. To our surprise uneaten foods such as sandwiches, noodles, hot dogs, etc. known as non-compostable food items made up most of the rubbish by weight in the bins. Unfortunately all of this food ends up at landfill. This is not only a big waste of food and money but it also has a big impact on the environment. All of that food when buried at landfill will produce methane, one of the main greenhouse gases that is causing global warming and climate change. For this reason we are now asking students to take home any uneaten food so parents can see what is and what isn t being eaten. It might be that too much food is being given or that children don t actually like the food that they are being given so they throw it away. We are asking all parents to talk to their children about this problem. Some people think that we can t do anything about global warming and climate change but at Silverton we know that small changes can make a difference. We need your help to reduce our waste going to landfill. At Silverton we care about the environment so we want to do everything that we can to make sure that we have a safe and sustainable future for everyone. Thanks for your support Emmanuelle Blake
