1 A Ministry of Green Point Baptist Church Newsletter of Green Point Christian College Mrs Debra Walls Principal News from Green Point Christian College 29 August 2013 BYOD - Bring Your Own Device Planning is continuing for the implementation of BYOD in 2014 in the Secondary School. The implementation will be a phased process and we will be having a parent forum to discuss issues and concerns that parents may wish to raise. The fact that the program is being phased in will not obviate the desire of a student who may wish to bring a device. The basis of implementing BYOD is as a transformative educative experience. Its purpose is not just to transfer note taking from a pen to a computer. We tend to talk about technology as an innovation but for our students it is just a way of life. Therefore we need to be thinking about how we use technologies to support our teaching and learning programs. Technology will continue to change the way we interface with each other and the world and part of our goal at Green Point Christian College is to ensure that we develop students who have strong digital literacy for encoding and decoding of the information that forms the current educative landscape. We also need to ensure the digital well-being of our students which includes: being informed, being cautious, being wise and being aware. We will be developing Digital Citizenship programs which all students will complete each year to ensure they are aware of the inherent risks in technology. Students will be made aware of digital etiquette, the rights and responsibilities of all users and the notions and ideas that maintain the integrity of information used. Our staff will also undertake Professional Development to ready themselves for this innovation. We look forward to working with you in this process where technology is viewed as a learning aid, and will not be without its challenges but we are committed to adapting our teaching practices toward the skills needed in the 21 st century for our students. I will continue to keep you informed about our progress. HSC Students Please continue to remember our HSC students in your prayers. Their 13 years of schooling is coming to an end and we want them to finish strongly. 2 2 Junior School News Chapel Clay Dalrymple played Baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies in the mid sixties. His team was famous for losing 10 games in a row to sensationally miss the finals series. In the midst of these losses however Clay volunteered to accompany a blind girl onto the field at the conclusion of a game. Instead of rushing the young fan around, Clay patiently walked her from base to base, chatting as he went. Upon reaching home plate, Clay was amazed when thousands of fans erupted in spontaneous applause. Unbeknownst to him, the departing supporters had stopped to quietly watch this demonstration of kindness. I said to the children last week two things happen when we are kind to those outside of our immediate friendship circle. Firstly, the person receiving the kindness is blessed and secondly, if anyone happens to notice, they are hopefully inspired to demonstrate kindness as well. I am inspired on a daily basis by the kind ways of the children and encouraged to remember it is the kindness of God Paul writes that leads others to repentance. Maths Olympiad For the first time none of our students scored five from five. No surprise either when you try to correctly answer question five: How many whole numbers have their non-zero digits in ascending order and also contain a 3, 5 and 8? (3458 and are correct examples). Mrs Bourke for the answer kbourke@gpcc.nsw.edu.au. Fathers Day Stall #1 Many thanks to all families who have sent gifts or money to support our stall this Friday. 4 Middle School News Middle School Debating Over the last month teams from Years 7, 8 and 9 have competed in the Josie Mitchell Debating Competition for schools on the Central Coast. Members of each team have represented the school with great decorum. Last Thursday the Year 7 Team (coached by Mr Chambers) and Year 9 Team (coached by Mr Richards ) were successful in defeating St Peter s Catholic School in the Final Round. The Year 8 Team (coached by Mr Cohen) was narrowly defeated. Even so each of the teams have had a successful season. All students are commended for their great efforts in this competition with particular congratulations to the Year 9 team who remain undefeated this year and are overall winners. Year 7 Metamorphic Cookies? A great day was had in Middle School when 7S continued their study in Science of metamorphic rocks. Their lesson was to construct their own Metamorphic Cookie. The students had to put their cookie under incredible pressure and heat, to ensure their metamorphic cookie was good to eat! Mrs Stylianou Interschool Chess Challenge GPCC travelled to Newcastle on Monday to participate in the Semi-Finals of the Interschool Chess Challenge. We qualified having won the first phase of the competition. The team ended up coming equal 5th out of 13 schools. 5 Senior School News Year 12 The Trials are over. Year 12 are racing to the end of their schooling with the HSC looming. Pressure is building in many of them as reality strikes. It is so important that they do not waste their time in the next few weeks. Teachers have revision ready for them to undertake, it is such a great time to get study underway. Every student needs to be in class if they are to achieve the results of which they are capable. In addition many of the major works and practical examinations for the HSC are being handed in or preformed at this time adding additional stress. Drama is to be held on Friday and Music is up in a few weeks. Please pray for our Year 12. They need God s strength at this time. Year 10 Interviews Year 10 have begun their re-entry interviews for Year 11. They are a great group of students with a huge potential. However, they need to come back with the right attitude to undertake the pressures of the HSC. Therefore, three options can come from the interviews. Letters will be sent with acceptance, acceptance on provisional basis or a decline in position. Parents may appeal any of these after the letter has been sent. Year 12 Graduation This is just an early reminder that Year 12 Graduation is coming up very quickly. Please put in your diaries the following details. Location: MPC Date: Thursday 19 September 2013 Time: am Late to School The alarm dingles in the background as your child s deep sleep seems unaffected by its cry, It s time to get up and off to school. Slowly movement occurs the rush is on but the bus is missed and your child arrives to the College after Period 1. Please remind them, through their sleepy haze, in your most loving voice, as you push them out of the car door, Sweetie, please go to the back window of the College Office and SIGN IN! Uniform Many of our students are quickly moving through the discipline system and ending up on After School Detention or Saturday Morning Detention because they do not wear their uniform correctly or wear the correct uniform. Some students have been changing their uniform once they leave home. Can I please encourage parents to make sure that their child comes to school with the correct uniform. It is unfair on every other student who does the correct thing if others choose to create their own uniform. We know that individuality comes from within a person and not from what they wear. If you are unsure of the uniform please check in the Senior School Diary for the full description. 11 Sport News Romans 5:1-5 (MSG) 1-2 By entering through faith into what God has always wanted to do for us set us right with him, make us fit for him we have it all together with God because of our Master Jesus. And that s not all: We throw open our doors to God and discover at the same moment that he has already thrown open his door to us. We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand out in the wide open spaces of God s grace and glory, standing tall and shouting our praise. 3-5 There s more to come: We continue to shout our praise even when we re hemmed in with troubles, because we know how troubles can develop passionate patience in us, and how that patience in turn forges the tempered steel of virtue, keeping us alert for whatever God will do next. In alert expectancy such as this, we re never left feeling short-changed. Quite the contrary we can t round up enough containers to hold everything God generously pours into our lives through the Holy Spirit! Hard times reveals our true character. In the NLT, it says 3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. When we are in the eye of the storm of a situation, we may feel lost, unsure or struggle to see the end of what is happening. It is in these times that we find ourselves digging in our heels and looking for a solution. When we come out the other side, it reveals something about ourselves - that we have just survived a storm. One that seemed at the time, like we had no hope, nor a resolve to get out of. We learn from our experiences and adapt those to future storms that will come our way. I won my first Premiership at the age of 31 (playing Rugby since I was 8). After a year with Avoca and winning a minor Premiership, we played our worst game of the year in the Finals and missed out on the opportunity to play in the Grand Final. The next year we accomplished it with a do or die attitude. The lesson that I learnt is that patience will develop character to stand up and be counted. To realise that I have the ability and can achieve what I thought would be unobtainable that elusive Premiership. As we draw on Gods wisdom, it reveals who we are and how we can become better at what we do or want to achieve. Oztag We have the Central Coast Oztag Gala Day coming up on Tuesday 3 September for Years 9 and 10 and Opens, and Tuesday 10 September for Years 7 and 8. The Gala Day is held at Morrie Breen Oval, Kanwal. Netball The Zone Netball Gala Day is on Tuesday 3 September with an Under 15s and Opens Team competing. We wish them all the best. Basketball We have two teams competing at the State Basketball Gala Day on Friday 6 September. We wish the Junior Girls and Senior Boys Teams all the best. Congratulations Jesse Parnell and Riley Battle (Year 9) represented Lake Macquarie City FC in the Northern NSW Football 15s State Youth League Grand Final on Saturday. They unfortunately succumbed to a set piece goal and went down 1-0. Good news is that both boys have been offered positions with the club to play U/17s NBN State League in Congratulations boys! 11
