1 Edition 25: 8 th August 2016 Prayer for Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop Ever generous God, You inspired Saint Mary MacKillop to live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and constant in bringing hope and encouragement to those who were disheartened, lonely or needy. With confidence in your generous providence and through the intercession of Saint Mary MacKillop. We ask that you grant our request. We ask that our faith and hope be fired afresh by the Holy Spirit so that we too, like Mary MacKillop, may live with courage, trust and openness. Ever generous God hear our prayer. We ask this through Jesus Christ. Amen. 2 Jewellery at School A reminder to our parents and students regarding our school s jewellery policy. Children may wear a school badge, a watch, one silver or gold single thread bangle or signet ring, gold or silver plain studs. Only one earring in each ear is allowed. No necklaces or bracelets are permitted, with the exception of medical alert bracelets. School Board Meeting The next School Board Meeting will be held on Monday 15 th Staffroom. August at 4.30pm in the Primary RE NEWS The Feast of St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop Today, Monday 8 th August, is the Feast of Australia s first Saint, St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Our Primary students (Years 3-6) attended Mass to celebrate this Feast. Mary was dedicated to educating and caring for the poor. She was the first Sister and Mother Superior of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Kindergarten Liturgy There will be a Kindergarten Liturgy tomorrow, Tuesday 9 th August, at 11.35am in the Infants Hall. We hope you can make it! Shoe Box Collection The Shoe Box Collection continues. Thank you to those who have already donated empty shoe boxes, items to fill the boxes and a few filled boxes. As a Parish, we aim to fill and deliver 50 shoe boxes filled with a few essentials to help out a refugee or homeless person. Items to fill a box can include non-perishable food items, up & go breakfasts, muesli bars, toiletries, hats, scarves, socks, underwear, books. We need lots of empty shoe boxes as well. Please write on the box if it is intended for a man, woman, boy or girl. You may want to include a letter, it is up to you! Please dig deep for those in need. Filled boxes may be taken directly to the Church at any weekend Mass. Please send empty shoe boxes to Mrs Clarke at the Primary Campus. The shoe box collection will conclude in September, with distribution taking place on the 25 th September. Never see a need without doing something about it - St Mary of the Cross The Feast of the Assumption Next Monday 15 th August is the Feast of the Assumption. The Assumption marks the end of Mary s earthly life and she is taken to heaven, body and soul. On this very special feast day our students will attend Mass at 10.00am. Your Prayers are asked for Maureen Macpherson (Nana Mac), Mother of Clare Dubois & Mother-in-Law of Michael, and Great Grandmother of Riley Jones, Hannah & Zali Kapeller and Makayla & Jacinta Hoffman, who sadly passed away recently.
3 A Message from the Tamworth Parish Priests It has been decided by Tamworth Parish Priests that if a non-catholic parent(s) wishes to have their child/children baptised in the Catholic Church, parents must undergo the RCIA program, even if they have no intention of becoming a Catholic themselves. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program will begin in September. This will help parents better understand the Catholic Faith their children will be received into. Sally Clarke & Tess Lewis (Religious Education Coordinators) STUDENT WELLBEING We remind parents, as part of our school s Wellbeing and Healthy Eating Program, we have decided to act on and implement the following strategies through our School Canteen. PLEASE NOTE: 1. LOLLIES will NO LONGER BE SOLD through the Primary and Infants Canteen. Current remaining stocks will only be sold at Lunchtime, not Recess time, and will not be replenished once gone. 2. At this stage, SLUSHIES will still be available for purchase, but only the pear based natural flavour, NOT the other flavoured syrups.

11 WISE WORDS FOR FAMILIES IT STARTS WITH RESPECT Respect starts at home As parents we have an incredible power to shape positively children s attitudes and behaviours, including how they treat others. Here are three ideas to develop respect at home: 1. Start by insisting that siblings treat each other well. Encourage both genders to resolve conflict and disputes using low power methods such as talking things through; give and take and apologising. 2. Socialise your sons. It s easy to excuse boy s aggressive behaviour as part of being a boy. Yes, their physiology may mean they are more prone to handle disputes physically but that doesn t mean we accept that. Model for your sons how to resolve disputes in a civil and civilised way. 3. Put respect on the agenda. Healthy families talk about the things that matter to them. If respect matters then you need to hold conversations around disrespectful behaviours whether they occur in the family or outside. Be willing to listen to children s and young people s views, but also to challenge views that are questionable. Respect is the core value of a civil society; and that s also the core value in every healthy, functioning family I ve ever worked with. By Michael Grose
