1 ST MARY S COLLEGE UNIFORM POLICY 1. INTRODUCTION The wearing of the College uniform is directly related to the values of stewardship and respect. Stewardship is concerned with acting responsibly with the physical environment, the ethos and image of the College within the broader community. It recognises that our actions affect the spirit of the College, the image of the College and perceptions of the student community. Respect calls each person to an awareness of their own dignity and the dignity of others. The College uniform provides safety and a sense of identity and belonging. It acts to remind the public that the whole community shares in the responsibility to care for and protect children. The uniform is a visible and public statement that the girls are children or young women and students of St Mary s College. The benefits of the College uniform also bring obligations. The College expects that while wearing the uniform, all students behave in a manner that is consistent with the values of the College and contributes positively to the image of the College. It similarly expects that each item of the uniform is worn in the manner consistent with its design and function. 2. 2 3. EXPECTATIONS Dress & Skirt Length The College uniform, both winter skirt and summer dress, are designed and manufactured to be worn at or below knee length. The College expects that the lengths of these are not shortened after purchase to above the knee and that hems are lowered to meet this requirement as a student grows (if necessary). Labels The College requests that all uniform items be labelled, especially the jumper and blazer. The College will not take responsibility for items of clothing that are misplaced or lost. Summer Uniform Terms 1 & 4 Students are expected to wear the College summer dress, black flat lace-up shoes and white socks. If an additional garment is needed for warmth transiting to and from school during these terms, the College blazer must be worn. The College jumper may be worn at school. A College hat must be worn during recess and lunch in Terms 1 and 4 if outside in the direct sun. Winter Uniform Terms 2 & 3 Students are expected to wear the College skirt, white shirt, College tie, navy opaque tights and black flat lace-up shoes. The blazer must be worn to and from school. The College jumper may be worn under the blazer to and from school and as the outer garment at school. The College scarf may also be worn. If the forecast temperature, according to the Bureau of Meteorology website, is above 25C, students will be advised (via the PA system) the preceding afternoon before going home that they can wear their summer uniform the following day. School Bag All students are expected to use the College school bag to transport their belongings to and from school. If students need an additional carry bag for sports uniform it must be the navy St Mary s College sports bag or fabric bag available from the Uniform Shop. Hair Hair must be of natural colours and a length and style appropriate to the image of the College. Hair that is shoulder length or longer, must be tied back with a College uniform white or navy blue scrunchie, band, ribbon or clip. Hair must not cover the face. Hats Hats must be worn during all Physical Education lessons in Terms 1 and 4. Hats must also be worn during recess and lunchtime in Terms 1 & 4, if sitting in the direct sun. Make-up & Nail Polish Make-up and nail polish (including shellac) is not permitted to be worn at school.

3 Jewellery and Tattoos Jewellery is not permitted with the school uniform except for a plain flat ring, one plain gold or silver stud or sleeper in each ear lobe, and a small cross or religious medal on a chain. Facial piercings and tongue piercings, including any form of retainer, are not permitted to be worn while students are in school uniform. Any permanent tattoos must be kept covered at all times. Henna tattoos are not permitted, especially as they are more often than not evident on the hands which cannot be covered up. 4. SPORTS UNIFORM Polo Shirt blue/gold/white with monogram Shorts navy/gold monogrammed Jacket - blue/gold/white monogrammed (optional) Track pants blue/gold/white monogrammed (optional) Rugby top monogrammed (optional) Short white socks (Optional monogrammed socks available) Blue bucket/legionnaires hat or College baseball cap Shoes: Predominantly white sports shoes that offer good support for the feet are to be worn. Leisure shoes (e.g. Dunlop Volleys) are not suitable. In order to participate fully in Physical Education lessons, students must wear the correct PE uniform requirements. Students who do not have the correct uniform will receive an incorrect uniform notice which is managed in the same way as the general uniform policy, by the Health and Physical Education teachers. The sports shirt, shorts, socks, shoes and hat or cap are compulsory for all students in Reception to Year 12, and are to be worn for all PE lessons and sport. Students are permitted to wear their sports uniform to and from school only when they have a PE lesson on that day. Students are not permitted to wear their sports uniform to and from school when they only have matches or training after school. They are expected to change at school. Students who have training before school must change before going to lessons. Students are permitted to wear sports uniform to and from school when they are participating in a sporting event that will absent them from school for the entire day or the majority of the day. Parents will receive a letter from the school confirming such an event. Uniform non-compliance for Physical Education is managed by the subject teacher. Students will be issued with a note to be placed in the student s diary requiring parental or carer acknowledgement. After three incidents of non-compliance, the subject teacher will make contact via a phone call with a parent / carer over the issue.

4 Uniform Noncompliance (Process) 5. UNIFORM NON-COMPLIANCE PROCESSES & CONSEQUENCES 1. Students choosing not to comply with the uniform expectations of the College will have the uniform concern noted in their diary (page xiii). They are asked to seek parental acknowledgement of this occurrence. 2. Students wearing jewellery that is outside the Uniform Policy will be asked to remove it. It will then be placed in an envelope and passed on to the Deputy Principal: Student Wellbeing. It may be collected from the office of the Deputy Principal: Student Wellbeing at 3.15pm. Students wearing make-up or fingernail polish will be asked to remove it in Care Group or may be sent to the Student Services Offices to remove it. 3. If uniform non-compliance is extreme (hair colour or style inappropriate, casual clothes) a student is sent to the relevant sub-school director and/or Deputy Principal: Student Wellbeing. 4. If uniform non-compliance continues to a third incidence the issuing teacher, if not the Care Group Teacher, is asked to notify the Care Group Teacher who will make contact via a phone call to a parent or guardian over the issue. 5. If uniform non-compliance continues to a sixth incident the issuing teacher, if not the Care Group Teacher, is asked to notify the Care Group Teacher who will notify the appropriate School Director who will arrange an interview with a parent / carer. 6. If uniform non-compliance continues beyond six interventions the issuing teacher, if not the Care Group Teacher, is asked to notify the Care Group Teacher. The Care Group Teacher is asked to notify the appropriate School Director who will notify the Deputy Principal Student Wellbeing, who will follow it up with parents/caregivers, where necessary. Level 1 Level 2 Level 3 If sixth incident, School Director will contact parent / carer to come in to school for interview to discuss uniform issue and seek compliance Teacher to record uniform non-compliance in student diary and request to see parental acknowledgement the following day If third incident, issuing teacher to inform Care Group Teacher If sixth incident, issuing teacher to inform CGT who will inform appropriate School Director After sixth incident the issuing teacher to inform CGT >SD>DP: SWB If uniform non-compliance is extreme (hair colour or style inappropriate, casual clothes) send student to Deputy Principal: Student Wellbeing. If further uniform noncompliance is noted SD is to inform DP: SWB. Students will be withdrawn from lessons and parent / carer communication advising them of withdrawal until the student presents at school within the uniform expectations If uniform non-compliance is extreme (hair colour or style inappropriate, casual clothes) student will exit lessons and parental / carer communication will occur advising them of the choice that needs to be made for re-entry to class.
