Some have limited seasons, so it is recommended that students check with the teacher supervisor to find out meeting dates and activity schedules. Teachers volunteer their time for these extracurricular activities to enrich everyone s school experience.

2 1. Badminton Club M. Fortin Anyone is welcome to join and play. Weekly court time, coaching and mentoring, plus lots of competition at every level of play. 2. Cancer Awareness Club W. Matsubuchi All are welcome to help raise awareness of cancer prevention, and fundraise for the Canadian Cancer Society s research so far, our club has raised over $40,000! Highlights include Movember, a trip to the BC Cancer Agency, distribution of daffodil pins & the Daffodil Dash. Bonus: members earn service hours! 3. Cards Club B. Chaddock 4. Chess Club R. Schultz/W. Matsubuchi Do you play online or in person? All experienced & brand-new chess players are invited to join. We have boards, or bring your own. New this year: Sutherland s hosting a tournament October 28 th ; you can get Canadian Federation of Chess rating & even win prizes. 5. Debate Club J. Bruchesi 6. DiverCity S. Kirkwood Creating an inclusive atmosphere that celebrates diversity in sexual orientation & gender variance. 7. Doodling Art Club D. Foster Like to mess around with a pencil? Fill your margins with flowers? Colour inside the lines? Any artistic flair is welcome in this club. We encourage marginalia! 8. Drama Club K. Gruetzner Responsible for mounting the school dramatic productions, this club is open to many whose talents shine on the stage, backstage & in design, front of house, promotion & management. 3 This district-wide leadership council needs Sutherland participants to help plan and coordinate great workshops and events for the multi-school leadership group. Students provide leadership, voice and student perspective on educational topics in North Vancouver. The group meets monthly after school at various secondary schools. 10. Environment Club B. Yeung-Meadows Weekly get-togethers & event participation to promote environmental awareness & responsibility. Helps to REDUCE/REUSE/RECYCLE at Sutherland. Organizes ACT- OF-TRANSIT DAY to promote active transportation and reduce car traffic at Sutherland. 11. Film & Photo Club A. Smyth Learn or polish skills in photo & film techniques, master software, produce works of art for school or personal satisfaction. Lots of hands-on experience. 12. Games Club M. Fortin Retro games, non-electronic mind games, high-tech games. Games, games, GAMES! You like games? Join this one and play! 13. Garden Club C. Bunbury/R. Noack Get your hands dirty, eat some homegrown veggies and promote gardening in an inclusive, fun and creative way. We meet every Wednesday & Thursday afternoon to work in the garden or plan our growing season. 14. Girls Group J. Paquette 15. Grad Council K. Jonat A committee of Grade 12 students who co-ordinate school-sponsored grad events & activities. 16. Gymnastics Club/Team T. Mitruk For new and seasoned gymnasts, this group provides excellent coaching, opportunities to compete or just learn in a supportive environment.

4 17. Mathletes Club H. Johns Seek elegant solutions, solve math puzzles, check out math outside the curriculum, prepare for math contests & free the math wizard within. 18. Me2We Club K. Gruetzner A group of activist students out to change the world, one small, thoughtful action at a time. Meets Fridays in the theatre. 19. Meatless Monday Club C. Bunbury Now a worldwide movement, Meatless Monday seeks to raise awareness of the impact of overconsumption of animal products, and to encourage lowering our intake of meat, beginning with just once a week. We coordinate with our cafeteria to present meatless options, and run information session to increase everyone s knowledge for healthier lifestyles. Meets Mondays at lunch. 20. Model United Nations Club C. Bunbury A group of keen, savvy, politically curious students who participate in up to six MUNs a year, honing debate, writing & research skills, & preparing to become the next generation of diplomats. 21. Mosaic Multicultural Club W. Matsubuchi All are welcome to join! Cultural events throughout the year promote multicultural awareness, inclusion & pride at Sutherland & in the community. Our 24-Hour Fast benefits youth on the North Shore and in Nepal. Bonus: members earn service hours! 22. Reach for the Top J. Bermudez/J. Manara/K. Lindahl Teams of students train and compete in this advanced knowledge/trivia game with other schools and groups. Great exercise for the brain! 23. Scholarship & Bursary Club J. Nevison/H. Turner All Grade 12 students are invited to meet and become informed about opportunities for awards/bursaries available to Sutherland Grads. Includes assistance with writing post-secondary applications. 24. Soup for Socks J. Paquette Members prepare, sell and serve a variety of delicious foods on Fridays at lunch as a fundraiser.

5 25. SLC-Student Leadership Council & Volunteer Corps C. Bunbury So many events and it s all hands on deck to get the job done. Sutherland s largest club, this group of eager, hard-working students devotes time to plan and carry out school & community events for the benefit of the entire student body and our family of schools. Volunteers accepted any time; membership drive in late May for the following academic year s Council. 26. Sun Run Club T. Alexis Meets twice a week from February to April to train Sutherland participants for the annual 10 km Vancouver Sun Run. 27. Table Tennis Club J. Nevison Assisting students to train & compete, provide encouragement and coaching & a chance to play this fun, fierce sport. 28. Work Experience/Apprenticeship J. Nevison/C. Abad Work is always the best experience, so go for the gold and find out what you are good at. Get out into the community and put in some valuable, and valued, time. Student Leadership Council Sutherland s SLC is large and vocal! We represent all grades and all interests in the school, working to make Sutherland welcoming, inclusive and celebratory for every one of us. SLC members apply to be part of this vital, hard-working group in May of each year. The executive is selected from the membership at the Spring Joint Council Retreat, where the following year s events are decided. At the Fall Retreat each year, the council takes leadership training and plans the events for the school year. If you missed your chance to join the SLC this year, please apply in May to be on it next year, or join our VOLUNTEER CORPS to assist at events. If you have ideas to share, please talk to your grade reps or attend our weekly meetings; all students are welcome.
