1 Dear Parents, 17 th May 2013 Evacuee Day On Wednesday, Year 5 took part in a school experience that explored children s lives in September They travelled back in time to become evacuees in an era where leaving your family, your home, your pets, your toys and everything with which you were familiar was the norm. They travelled on a steam engine dressed in 1940s clothing, sung songs of the age and ate a rationed lunch to bring the period vividly to life and to make comparisons between modern and WW2 times. Thank you to all the parents who made a brilliant effort with costumes for the trip. Also many thanks to Mrs Dunstan, Mrs Portelli and Mrs Cisowski for accompanying us. Cardiff County Year 6 Tennis Championships Last Monday, Sascha B, Charlotte H, Ellie L and Natasha S travelled to David Lloyd Tennis Centre to take part in the Cardiff Schools Mini-Green Tennis Championships. Victory in their first two matches set up a winner takes all game with a strong Llysfaen squad. The resulting 3-3 draw gave Howell's victory on count-back, by virtue of a higher tiebreak points score. This result means that all three of our competing age groups are Cardiff Champions and are now looking forward to South Wales Finals in June. Well done girls! Olympic Club Letters to reserve your daughter s space in Olympic Club after half term (for girls in Reception to Year 2) were sent home today and a copy can be found at the end of this newsletter. Mrs Yilmaz would like to thank all those that attended the Annual Display last Friday, it was a lovely event and the girls thoroughly enjoyed receiving their medals! Thank you to all the staff involved. Olympic Club for girls in Years 3 to 6 has now finished for the year.

2 Rounders with Llandaff Cathedral School Yesterday evening Year 6 played a rounders fixture with the Cathedral school at Howell's. Cathedral School, being short of Year 6 girls, brought one Year 6 team and one Year 7 team for the games. 27 girls from our Year 6 took part with results as follows: Howell's 6A defeated Cathedral Year 6 by 8-6 Howell's 6B lost to Cathedral 7B by 9-2 Mrs Baker Swimming Lessons Next Week The following classes will not have swimming lessons on their usual day next week. Instead, they will participate in the relevant Swimming Gala for their age group (on Thursday or Friday see below). Nursery (Thursday group), Reception, 2S, 4J, 6S and 6H Swimming Gala for Years 3 to 6 A reminder that our swimming gala for girls in Years 3 to 6 will take place at the Cardiff International Pool, Cardiff Bay next Thursday 23 rd May. Letters confirming the arrangements have been sent home this week. Please return the consent slip to your daughter s class teacher by Wednesday morning at the latest. Infant Swimming Gala Friday 24 th May The annual Swimming Gala for girls in Nursery to Year 2 will be held next Friday 24 th May. All the girls will participate throughout the day, competing in at least two races each. Each year group will take it in turn to spend time at the school pool. Girls should bring their usual swimming kit plus a t-shirt to wear at the poolside. As the girls will be competing for their house, they may like to wear a t-shirt of their house colour. Unfortunately, we do not have room for any parents to watch the races. Swimming Goggles Following some enquiries from parents, Mrs Jarvis has written these top tips for purchasing goggles for your daughter: Try on the goggles by pressing the goggles (without using the straps) onto your child s eyes the goggles should suck onto the sockets for a couple of seconds before losing suction if you can see gaps at the sides of the eyes water will get in all the time. Myth: Tightening the strap will ensure your goggles give a good fit. Fact: The goggle strap s sole purpose is to hold the goggle in position, not to provide the seal. Adjustment of the strap may be necessary, however avoid the temptation to pull the strap too tight, this will simply create uncomfortable pressure on the delicate eye area, not to mention an unsightly panda eye effect! Clear goggles make it easier for your child to see and all goggles have different sizing across the nose piece if you buy goggles where the nose piece cannot be adjusted please make ensure that the nose piece is the correct size for your child. Please sew a name tape onto your goggles to ensure they are returned to the owner if lost. Marker pen seems to wear off easily.

The Junior Music Room When? At 12.45pm Junior School Orchestra Reminders Just a quick reminder to orchestra members that... On Monday lunchtime (12.45pm pm) we will be entertaining our guests at the Open Rehearsal On Monday afternoon (3-3.15pm) we will be entertaining your parents at a short, informal concert in the Junior Music Room (parents may enter via the door at the end of the Music Wing) Please remember your instrument and music for these events! These will be our final events for this school year and I would like to thank you for all for your hard work and commitment during the year! I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Year 6 in particular for their dedication to the orchestra during their time in the Junior School and wish them all the best when they transfer to the Senior School. I look forward to seeing them making music in the many ensembles that are available to them in the Senior School and College. Mr Beckett TOOT Holiday Care Club There are a few places left in our TOOT Holiday Care Club during the May half term week. The club is open for girls and their siblings from 3 7 years. Parents Association A reminder that the Parents Association AGM will be held on 11 th June at 6.30pm in the Senior School.
