1 FRIDAY 20 th march 2015 News Model United Nations Conference Last weekend six of our senior students attended an inspirational weekend at the Model United Nations Conference at George Watson s College. Over 600 pupils from the UK, Ireland, Germany, Denmark and Iran took part in the event. Pupils worked in committees, debating wide-ranging world issues including human trafficking, Ebola, hacking and the Middle East. The standard of debate was extremely high and our pupils were involved from the first evening, negotiating and influencing proposed resolutions in their committees. We were delighted when Jack Poole received a welldeserved commendation award for his contribution. Saturday evening was spent enjoying a ceilidh and disco, before bringing the conference to a close on Sunday. Our pupils left with a greater knowledge of global issues and invaluable experience in international relations and diplomacy, as well as making lots of new friends and contacts. The teachers were extremely proud of our pupils and always come away from these conferences impressed at how knowledgeable, articulate and capable they are. This was our second MUN conference this year and we hope to attend a further conference in June.

2 S2 Music Technology Pupils in the S2 Music Technology enhancement class have been busy creating soundtracks using the recording software programme Mixcraft 6. The pupils have been working on individual projects using technology loops as well as recording live instruments. Recent projects have included creating a jingle for adverts (Oreo Biscuits and Baked Beans!), using paintings and photographs as a basis for composition and writing an original piece for a band. The results have been excellent with lots of very creative ideas across a wide range of musical styles. The feedback from the pupils has been very positive, as they have very much enjoyed trying out new instruments, combining their musical and computing skills and having the opportunity to create their own music. Lemonade and Smoothie Bar Earlier this week, the S3 Prince s Trust pupils made delicious homemade lemonade and berry appealing smoothies to sell at interval. The group raised over 50, which will be donated to CHAS.

3 P7 Concert This week NBHS welcomed the P7 students from all the cluster schools and some of their parents to a concert which involved many of our music ensembles. This is part of the P7 transition into joining us in the next academic year and gives them a fantastic opportunity to see what the music department have to offer in opportunities and instrumental tuition. The NBHS ensembles included the orchestra, strings group, guitar group, the woodwind ensemble and our junior choir In Harmony. The concert ended with the P7s treating us to a rendition of The Rhythm of Life which was thoroughly enjoyed by our pupils and the parents. We look forward to welcoming our new pupils in August.

4 Rugby Update There has been lot of rugby in the last week with both 15-a-side and sevens being played. On Saturday 14 th March, fixtures were played against Bell Baxter School at U14, U15, U16 and U18 level, with 3 teams winning and only 1 loss. On Sunday 15 th the attention swung to sevens at the Merchiston Castle tournament where the U14s, U15s, U16s and U18s performed admirably well against tough opposition, with the U16s and U18s reaching the semi-finals of the Bowl competition. On Tuesday 17 th the U14s and U15s attended the Stewart s Melville Ferryfield and Inverleith Cups and again performed well against strong opposition. There is still plenty of rugby to come including Cup semi-final action for the U16s, sevens competitions at George Heriot s School this Saturday for the U16s and U18s and the girls team debut at an East Lothian event.
