One of the main factors for academic success is regular attendance at school. Improving school attendance of our children is one of our major focus areas for 2017, as it was in The Department of Education standard for regular attendance is anything above 95%. To achieve this, the children should have no more than two days off per term. Absence from school should only be for illness. Our attendance rate for last year was 89.5%. Our goal for 2017 is an overall attendance rate of 92%. Currently we have achieved 92.45%. So far so good! This year we are rewarding the class that has the highest percentage of regular attendance. At each fortnightly assembly we will recognise the highest achieving class and present them with the Attendance Award. At the end of the term the class with the highest percentage of regular attendance will be treated to a sausage sizzle. Last week s winning class was LA 11. It is unfortunate that from time to time the school is vandalised or broken into. The cost of repairing this damage on an annual basis runs in to the 10s of thousands. There is also the impact upon the staff and children, whose work and belongings are damaged or stolen and when facilities are unusable for a period whilst the areas are made safe from broken glass and such. We have been able to secure funding from the Department of Education to improve the boundary security of the school. I have included a somewhat blurry mud mad with the newsletter showing the fence. Additionally some of the entry gates will be upgraded to make them less climbable. We have deliberately left the playground, cricket nets and the basketball court outside of the fence, which are part of the school site, so that the community may continue to enjoy them out of hours. It was a very successful event and our fundraising efforts for 2017 are off to a flying start. Easter Basket Raffle: The P&C is running its epic Easter basket raffle again this year. If you wish to make a donation, please drop it off to anyone in the community room or to a P&C member. Items don t have to be just chocolate, think activities you like to do with family at this time - fishing, camping, games etc Tickets will be handed out to students soon.

2 Hi everyone This fortnight in the office, I had Kyla and Jasmine (LA10) sing to me and play the ukulele. We even had a jamming session afterwards, such fun and such great talent. I have seen students who are showing great resilience in behaviour and achieving academic success by setting their goals and achieving them. I have also had the pleasure of making two positive phone calls home. A highlight this week has been the visit to our school from three Fremantle Dockers players. This was a significant attainment for our school and thanks to our Physical Education teacher extraordinaire, Ms Mottram, we were able to meet the players and learn from them about setting goals and leading a healthy lifestyle. Here I am with Stephen Hill as he draws one of our $5.00 canteen vouchers for positive behaviour this week. Kind regards Caroline Churchill Deputy Principal FORTNIGHTLY STUDENT LEADER REPORT Sculptures by the Sea 2017 On March 14, LA12 and 14 went to Cottesloe Beach to see Sculptures by the Sea. Whilst we were there we observed many magnificent artists work. The sculptures were all 3D from mere centimetres to metres long and tall. As you can see, there were several favourites. Most people agreed Margarita Sampson s Dearest was gigantic, beautiful and extremely pink. It is a combination between a chaise lounge and a massive mixture of octopus tentacles. Alessandro Rossi s Untitled Coral (aqua) was the subject on many a conversation. It had layer upon layer of coloured glass, reflective of the horizon. It had all the colours of a seascape, from light to dark. Meanwhile, the giant nautilus shell had all of the colours of the rainbow. Some said it was like looking through the church windows. Others said it was like a rainbow on the beach. It was huge, colourful and made from steel and glass. These artists really are talented. After hours of studying the sculptures, we were hungry and ready for a run around. We headed to Kadidjiny Park in Melville for some fun and laughter. There was everything a kid could ask for slides, swings, climbing frames and plenty of space to kick the footy and run around. The students of LA12 and 14 would like to thank all of the parents and staff who came along and helped out. We had a great time and have loads of ideas and inspiration for creating our own sculpted projects. We will unveil these at next term s Sculptures on the Green. We hope to see you all there.

3 PE NEWS Recently our upper primary girls competed in the Girls Multisport Carnival. On Thursday March 9th we took year 5 and 6 teams to participate in cricket, AFL and netball games against other schools from surrounding districts. The day was a huge success, with our girls playing hard and having fun. They took marks, passed, kicked, hit, bowled and tackled their little hearts out, making many new friends along the way. Congratulations to both of our teams and thank you for the huge parent support. Special thanks go to South Fremantle Football Club for their donation of a large drinks barrel and team bottles. These may have been the secret to our success on the AFL field in particular, as the year 5 girls brought home the Fremantle Dockers winner s shield for Go Cooby!! basketball, and league tag to all of our members. We hard and have Our next event is the Cockburn District Summer Carnival, Thursday 23rd March. We are entering teams in lacrosse, cricket rugby. Good luck year 4-6 team hope you play an amazing day. LANGUAGES UPDATE: Dear Parents and Carers We are celebrating Building Day (Hari Membina) on Wednesday, 29 March at Coolbellup Community School. All students are invited to dress up in builder s outfits or fluorescent colours (e.g. high visibility vests) and bring a gold coin to donate towards our Bali sister school, SD2 Liligundi. Students are most welcome to still bring in a gold coin if they prefer not to dress up. We are looking for any parents/carers who would like to donate cakes or snacks (preferably with a builder/building theme) to sell at the cake stall at recess on the day. Please leave a message for Olivia Mottram or myself by phoning the school office on Your donation is greatly appreciated. If your child is allowed to purchase from the cake stall, please bring in additional gold coins. A letter regarding information on ingredients used in the food items will be sent home to parents before 27 March. A small donation will go a long way for our friends in Bali. There will be a team building challenge held at lunchtime, facilitated by the Student Leaders. Please bring in an extra gold coin for this activity. 4 POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT ( PBS ) COMMITTEE UPDATE: We have had a fantastic start to our 2017 school year. As the end of Term 1 rapidly approaches, we are busy organising our end of term reward for those students who have demonstrated outstanding personal behaviour. These students who have maintained a good standing in our school community will be invited to participate in our Cooby Water Fun Day on the oval in Week 10. Those students who have not maintained their good standing through being suspended or having five office referrals, will not be able to participate this term. They will become eligible again in Term 2 for any rewards, excursions and carnivals if they demonstrate our school s standards for student citizenship. Our new Cooby Cards have replaced the old faction tokens. Students who are demonstrating our expected behaviours of excellence in the areas of academic achievement, responsibility and respectfulness receive these cards with a chance of winning a $5.00 canteen voucher. Four vouchers are drawn each Wednesday at our whole school meeting. Stay tuned for more PBS news. Parents/carers are invited to make a voluntary contribution up to a maximum of $60.00 per student. Please note that we do not have EFTPOS facilities. Payment can however be made directly into the school bank account or by cheque/cash. Please state student name/voluntary Contributions as your reference. Docker s visit - more great pics!
