Any absences this week must be accompanied by a medical certificate. The demands on senior students are seemingly constant. It is essential that they have a regular study program with a quiet, comfortable place in which to work. This is a time when Baulko perseverance comes to the fore. Please encourage your child to have regular, brief breaks from their study and get some fresh air, exercise and healthy food. Best wishes to all our students who are competing at the Zone Athletics championships this week. We are sending a contingent of approximately 100 students and hope for considerable success given their school achievements. 3 P&C News General Meeting The P&C's next General Meeting will take place on Tuesday 27 June at 7.30pm in the library. Our guest speaker will be Lynne-Adele Treanor, Head Teacher History. She will talk about the new curriculum and explain the differences from the old History curriculum and share some helpful tips. There will also be time for questions at the end of her presentation. Ms Treanor is scheduled to speak at the beginning of the meeting so endeavour to be on time so that you don't miss out on her presentation. Shiran Rajaratnam, P&C President BAND NEWS Well done to Junior Band who performed their progress concert last Wednesday evening for families and friends. Thank you to conductor Mrs Renee Burrows for organising the evening, and ensuring students have an extensive and engaging music repertoire. Many students are given the opportunity to start playing larger or lower brass instruments, which not only gives the band a fuller sound, but extends students' abilities. Thank you once again to Miss Hann for her contributions to the band program. 4 Sports News Schools Cup Volleyball On Friday 16 th June we had 3 girl s teams and 5 boy s teams play in a Volleyball tournament. The main problem was that the girls played at Olympic park while the boys had to travel to South Windsor a very long way away for most of the boys. The boy s results were again quite impressive. The Yr11 boys played Open Division 2, being undefeated and winning Gold. Both the Yr9/10 team and the Yr9 teams made finals. Although both lost their games, a silver medal for both was a great result. The two Yr8 boy s teams both played in their first Volleyball tournament. It was a great learning experience for them all. Neither won a medal, but I am sure that the experience will make them more determined to train harder and improve their skills. The girl s results were equally as pleasing. The Yr10 girls missed a place in the final (no semi finals) by points for and against. We had 2 U/16 yr9 teams. One team came 2 nd in their pool, while the other team went through the day undefeated and coming away with the gold. All in all, a great effort by all of the teams. Finally, congratulations to the Open Boys team by becoming Sydney West Champions after comfortably defeating Rooty Hill in the Regional final. 5 Careers News Sydney University Leadership Award Applications and Process Sydney University spoke to students last week regarding their Leadership Award. Here is the link to the application: The Award is chosen on three criteria: 1) Academic achievement and future goals, 2) Leadership qualities, 3) Extracurricular/community and social justice involvement. The timeline for the Award is as follows: Friday June 2 Applications open Sunday August 20 Applications close Monday August 21 University to forward applications to the school Monday August 28 School submits a shortlist to the university August 31/Sept 1 University Selection Committee meeting Tuesday September 5 Recipients finalised University of Sydney Dalyell Scholarship Information Commencing in 2018, the Dalyell (apparently pronounced dee-el ) Scholars program rewards high achieving students achieving an ATAR or equivalent of 98+ through comprehensive academic, leadership and mentoring opportunities, alongside a global mobility scholarship, enabling students to challenge themselves and excel alongside their most promising and talented peers. At the Dalyell Scholars Information and Networking Evening students will hear from a range of speakers including academic staff, current students, alumni and industry representatives, and will have the opportunity to collaborate and network first-hand with other prospective Dalyell Scholars. The evening will be held on our Camperdown/Darlington campus on Tuesday 4 July from 6-8pm. For more information and registration, please visit the event page. This event has limited places. UAC Preferences 2017 Reminder As previously reported, this year there will be five UAC preferences only, down from nine. UAC has clarified that this is 5 preferences at one time. That means that if you receive an offer, you can accept that offer and then leave it off the list in favour of something else in the next round. The dates that you will receive offers have also changed. The very good news here is that the first round is before Christmas so some of you might well get an early present this year and can go about fully enjoying your hard-earned break after that. I will detail the inner-workings of how offers occur soon as there are some changes this year. They will not affect BHHS students negatively, but it s worth knowing how it all works for your mental, as well as practical, preparation. Page 5

6 LAT (UNSW Law) Registrations Registrations for the Law Admission Test are now open. This is a test for UNSW candidates and is required for admission to their Law degrees. It works in conjunction with students ATAR scores to determine their aptitude for the study and practice of Law. The LAT operates on a sliding scale, meaning that it is relied upon more heavily if the ATAR is lower. This is because UNSW recognises that the ATAR is useful for indicating overall performance but not whether the individual is suited to studying and practicing Law. Please note that UNSW has been transparent enough to tell us that an ATAR of 95+ would still be required for you to have a reasonable expectation of entry. Registrations close on August 11 th and the test is on September 26 th. It consists of only two questions and no Law-specific knowledge is required. It s a test designed to determine abilities associated with critical and analytical thinking as well as organising and expressing ideas.
