1 Collingwood College News & Views 8 May 2013 On Thursday 2 May a group of our Year 9 students, aka Team Lord of the Wings, were invited to attend the 2013 Evening Awards Ceremony for the Wings of Hope Achievement Awards (WOHAA). The ceremony was held at the Royal College of Surgeons in London. This was the culmination of the fundraising activities competition for which the team had been declared semi-finalists. Our students were accompanied on the trip by Mrs Green (Year Manager - Year 9) and Mrs Lee (Pastoral Assistant - Year 9). They were chosen as only 10 award winners from around 320 original entrants to the competition. The team writes: Events Coming Up... Thursday 9 May BTEC Concert, Kingston Theatre, 5.00pm until 7.00pm Thursday 16 May Year 7 Parents Evening, Sixth Form Centre, 4.30pm until 7.00pm Saturday 18 May DofE Bronze Practice 1 We were really excited on the train, laughing and having fun. With the girls in fairy wings and face paint we entered the Royal College of Surgeons which was beautiful and very grand. We ate dinner and then went and sat down. There was a really cool presentation and with music blaring they started handing out the awards. They got through many, then they said and the runner-up for the best presentation is..the Lord of the Wings. We were all really excited and went up to collect our award; we all got beautiful trophies. A photo was taken with the co-founder of WOHAA (as shown above) and then we sat back down. As we left we were really excited at the prospect of next year which we have already decided to participate in. Team Lord of the Wings Many congratulations to Lord of the Wings - we are extremely proud of your achievements and look forward to hearing about next year s fundraising activities. Mrs Green - Year Manager (Year 9) Earlier in the year n-gage 8 students were tasked with exploring different careers within the NHS and then preparing presentations and careers literature to promote their chosen occupation. Over 1660 students entered the competition and three Collingwood College students Jonathan Quin, Scott Burrows and Callum Sutton (all from 8C) were highly commended for their entry which looked at the role of a Pathologist. The competition proved very popular this year and the judges were very impressed with the high overall standard of entries to the competition. Congratulations to Jonathan, Scott and Callum for their innovative and excellent work. 2 The London Marathon is a fantastic event and requires many volunteers along the way. This year, the water station at Mile 18 was manned by a few Collingwood students Rebecca Pycock and Emily-Ann Rance (9B) and Niamh Payne (8I). Our day began with an early start 6.00am coach pick up. The water station we were heading for was near Canary Wharf just before Mile 18. The first job of the day was unpacking pallets of water bottles onto tables - nearly 20,000 bottles! While we were finishing unpacking, the wheelchair competitors started to speed past and we caught a glimpse of David Weir, Olympic Champion. Around lunchtime the runners started to come through in their masses. Our job was to open the water bottles and hand them out. Occasionally, this resulted in water fights between us and the exhausted runners. It was amazing to see so many people raising money for such a range of charities and sometimes in such creative costumes. Rebecca Pycock and Emily-Ann Rance (9B) Well done to all the Year 11 students who participated in the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Final expedition in the New Forest last weekend. You should feel very proud of this achievement and the feedback I received with regards to your organisation, preparation and outstanding behaviour was excellent; you are a credit to your parents and the College. Thankfully you all returned safe and sound although a couple of you were feeling slightly the worse for wear! 3 Students in Year 9 will shortly be asked to participate in a National Survey to identify students attitudes towards science. The research is being conducted by NFER (National Foundation for Educational Research) on behalf of King s College, London and the results will be used to influence education policy. Students will complete the survey in their IT lesson. If you would prefer your child NOT to take part, please Mrs Green (Year Manager - Year 9). 4 We are pleased to announce that Mac Duaibe from Year 12 will be attending Rugby trials in September with the RFU England Under 18s Clubs and Schools Academy. Mac currently plays for Camberley Rugby Club. The England Under 18s Clubs and Schools team rewards players who have advanced within their Constituent Bodies. It allows talented players to achieve international honours while continuing to pursue academic and career interests, and keeps them on the selectors radar. We wish him the best of luck. Sixth Form Team The Online Data Collection Wizard which allows you to enter updated information about your child/children is available via the Parent Portal. We would be very grateful if you could take the time to log in to the Parent Portal using your Username and Password, click on My Child, then under My Children Links (at bottom of the screen) click on Data Collection Sheet (as shown in the screenshot on the right) and check that the details we hold on record for your child/children are correct, making any necessary changes.
