1 MODERN ENGLISH SCHOOL CAIRO 20 th February 2013 Dear Parents and Students With the mid-term break only days away, I am so pleased to be writing to you once again. The past two months have been happily productive, indeed, with recruitment of new teachers for the upcoming school year, 2013/14, now completed. There are so many wonderful events that have taken place, and are coming soon. What a pleasure it was to see many of our Primary students in action as they celebrated the Prophet Mohamed s Birthday in a delightful performance this month. We were honoured to have members of the Ministry of Education in attendance along with the parents. Great thanks to those students involved, and to the entire Primary Arabic Department for all their work in producing this beautiful and thoughtful event. This week our Primary sports days continue, after a spectacular start with FS2 last Thursday. What fun to see our students in action, with so many parents in attendance cheering them on! Residentials are a priority in Key Stage 2 during Term 2, with many children in Years 4, 5 and 6 taking the opportunity to further their learning outside of the classroom. Year 5 students have recently returned from a successful Nile cruise where children reinforced their learning of both water and Ancient Egyptian history. Year 4 are about to embark upon their first ever residential with an overnight stay in Ain Soukhna which supports their Extreme Planet Curriculum Diversity topic. Year 6 are again to travel to Cyprus, spending time at the Krittou Terra Environmental Centre studying science in its living environment.
2 Our annual French Day, led by Mde Jacqueline, takes place on Wednesday 20 th March. The children in FS2 are now working very hard preparing for the FS2 Production on Thursday 21 st February Tickle My Prickles. To all our students in Secondary and Primary, a huge congratulations on all your successful basketball and football tournaments throughout the past six weeks. Secondary results from ISAC and CISSA tournaments were impressive, indeed: ISAC MS Girl s Football - 1 st Place ISAC MS Boy s Football - 2 nd Place CISSA Junior Varsity Boy s Basketball - 1 st Place CISSA Junior Varsity Girl s Basketball - 2 nd Place CISSA Varsity Girl s Basketball - 2 nd Place CISSA Varsity Boy s Basketball - 4 th place In Primary, preparations for the Year 5/6 BSME basketball/netball/football/athletics competition in Dubai next month carry on, with a successful training mini-tournament this past Saturday. Congratulations to the Girl s Football team who remain undefeated this season, and to the Year 3-6 Swim Team who won their Swimming Gala at NCBIS! I was so impressed with the Secondary Peripatetic Music Concert this past Thursday. A thousand thanks to all the students who played a variety of instruments, and sang so beautifully - they were a revelation to me. Keep up the great work! Again in Secondary section, many American, British, and IBDP section students are excitedly engaged in preparing for our school musical production of Les Miserables. It is shaping up to be a spectacular event, with scheduled performances on 17 th, 18th and 21 st April. More information on Les Miserables will be forthcoming.
3 On the academic front, my congratulations to all our secondary students involved in January mid-year exams. I am proud of your dedication and effort. The Grade 9 students have just completed their Individual Graduation Plan meetings, and I am looking forward to seeing many parents with us in the Secondary section this week in Y10-12/DP12 meetings. The summer uniform changeover period is between Sunday 24 th and Thursday 28 th March. Below is a reminder of our summer uniform. 4 In 2008, 2010, and again in 2012, MES Cairo organised a 24-hour Fun Run to raise money for a number of Egyptian charities, demonstrate the MES Cairo family spirit and lend support to the local community. Students, teachers, staff, parents and alumni all had a chance to participate and this event formed the centerpiece of our fundraising calendar. It was so successful in those years, that MES Cairo is holding the same event this year Modern English School Cairo 24-Hour Charity Fun Run On Wednesday 6 th March, in conjunction with the MES Cairo Have a Heart Month. All students, staff and members of the MES Cairo community will have the opportunity to Make a Difference in Egypt and run in the MES Cairo 24-hour Charity Fun Run 2013, with all proceeds going to the Adopt-a-School Charity. We are also delighted to inform you that the school photographs are ready. While purchase of these photographs is not compulsory, we do hope that you will support the school in this venture and make the most of this opportunity to obtain a treasured memento of your child s school day. Please complete the form attached, selecting from the choice of packs A, B or C, and return with the correct money to the class/homeroom teacher as soon as possible. Last date for receipt of form is Sunday 10 th March. The deadline for the third and final installment of tuition fees is Sunday, 31 st March. You can make the payment directly to the Accounts Department by bank deposit/transfer. We would like to remind you of the importance of ensuring that proof of bank payment is forwarded to the school. Please a copy of the payment slip to mescairo@mescairo.com or fax to clearly stating your child s name and class/computer number. Without this information, it will not be possible to allocate the payment to your account.
