1 SCHOOL NEWSLETTER I S S U E W E E K 4 MESSAGE FRO M TH E PRINCI PAL A D V A N C E I N W I S D O M 2 5 T H O C T O B E R, PRINCIPAL: Paul Mulqueen PHONE: principal@stjwarragul.catholic.edu.au Dear Families, When you look at the Crucifix you understand how much Jesus loved you then. When you look at the Sacred Host You understand how much Jesus loves you now. Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta On Sunday, the Church celebrated World Mission Sunday. In recognising this day, Pope Francis calls us all to reduce poverty around the world and to improve the quality of life for all our brothers and sisters. We are all invited to go out as missionary disciples to bring the message of God s tenderness and mercy to the entire human family, especially those within reach. Mission Day It was a pleasure to see the senior children so focused and inspired on Friday! The children and their families worked so hard to create many wonderful activities to engage the audience of spenders, and support those less fortunate than ourselves. The children s stalls, reflected the preparation involved and the thought processes behind why they chose a particular activity. The children were able to express the desire not just to have fun but to encourage people to donate money to those who have so little compared to us. They were keen to make a difference in the lives of others. Of course many parents gave so much as well, being the financial sponsors of the activities along with providing the time to bake together and create. We thank you for working with your children on this activity. I know that children visited their friends houses over the weekend to further plan their activity in order for it to be successful. Our younger children came full of excitement ready to spend the money generously donated by families and from their money boxes. They were not disappointed by the range of activities on offer. We were all very proud of the students and families as we watched the Mission Day unfold from our prayer reflection, the setting up, the involvement across the entire school, the cleaning up after and the looks of amazement at what they had achieved. Well done to all involved in any way! SAINT JOSEPH S SCHOOL COMMITTEE Mark Dunsmuir Margot Baker Luke Patterson Kate Wenig Bernard Miron Mandy Moore Mayli Jamieson

3 Wellbeing Caring Habits In our dealings with others we often want to connect effectively with people and establish good relationships. By following the following the Caring Habits we can lead lives that lead to relationship building, and help generate a warm and supportive environment. This is particularly relevant for us as educators and parents when dealing with our children, and dealing with other people. You might like to place these habits up at home so that you can continue to build good relationships and a supportive environment. THE CARING HABITS LISTENING SUPPORTING ENCOURAGING RESPECTING TRUSTING ACCEPTING NEGOTIATING Dairy Assistance Funding A reminder for families who may be eligible for the Victorian Government response package to assist dairy farming families. This includes assistance for primary and secondary students attending schools (government and non-government schools) where one or both parents: own an operating dairy farm are share farmers on a property primarily operating as a dairy farm hold a lease for an operating dairy farm work as an employee on an operating dairy farm and this is their main source of employment. The CSEF (The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund) eligibility criterion is being extended consistent with the 2016 drought response. Families that have previously qualified for the 2016 CSEF Drought assistance are not able to also access the CSEF Dairy assistance funding. The Dairy Assistance CSEF payment will be paid to the school that the student is currently enrolled at the start of Term The assistance can be used to offset any camps, sports, excursion or other school based education expenses incurred by the family. The school will allocate the payment directly to benefit the eligible student. Parents can apply for the dairy assistance funding by completing an application form. Please contact the school office for further information and/or an application form if you meet the criteria. We would ask that all applications are made with us by the 31st October.

They did a terrific job singing the hymns and prayers of our celebration, and we look forward to them hopefully singing once a month at our Youth Masses. Thank you to all the parents who supported their children in this fantastic contribution to our Parish. If your child is interested in contributing their gifts and talents once a month as part of the Youth Choir, please see Mr. Thompson. Combined Reconciliation Rite Children preparing for their First Holy Communion must receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to Communion. We are offering this at St. Joseph's Warragul on Thursday 3rd November, 7pm. If this time does not suit your family, please check the Parish bulletin for Reconciliation times during the week.

5 Religious Education & Parish News Communion Retreat Day Mission Day Report The Grade 5/6 Classes ran Mission Day last Friday which was a huge success. An amazing $ was raised! The event raises funds for Catholic Mission which operates in 160 countries, answering God's call to love one another by serving people in need, acting for justice and creation, and adopting child focused development programs. By raising money to help this organisation we are also answering God's call in a very real and practical way.

6 What s Happening In And Around Classrooms Mission Day - Friday 21st October On Friday we had mission day. Our stall was Ping Pong Peggle. The aim of the day is to raise money for the people in Cambodia that have less than us and I believe that it is really good. Our stall made over $180, I was pleased with that. Aedan 5/6F On Friday the 21st the Grade 5/6 s set up stalls for the rest of the school. I did the Wheel of Surprises. It was a really fun day raising money for Cambodia. Meg 5/6F I reckon it was fun. My stall was called Delightful Decorating and I loved it when the little kids said that it was the best stall ever! Stevie 5/6F

7 What s Happening In And Around Classrooms Music Count Us In 2016 Thursday 3rd November At 12:30pm Music Count Us In is back in 2016 and is on Thursday 3rd November. All St Joseph s students will be joining together in song at 12:30pm in the hall to celebrate the 2016 song Let it Play and to watch the song being sung by children all over the country through a live stream. Mrs Szkwarek has been working with our Grade 3-6 students in their music sessions and we will have our Grade 5 students playing percussion instruments through the song and our Grade 3/4 students leading us in actions. Music: Count Us In (MCUI) is Australia s biggest school initiative, with more than 500,000 participating students from over 2,300 schools nationwide. It brings teachers, parents, students and the music industry together in celebration, as more than half a million people unite to sing the same song at the same time, right across the country. In late 2005, the federally-funded National Review of School Music Education was handed down. The Review found that most students miss out on meaningful music education in schools. It said that we needed to lift the status of music in schools, to remind teachers, parents, principals, kids and the community about the value and benefits of learning music. This is how Music Count Us In came about and has now become an annual event for the students and teachers at St Joseph s. If any parents are around the school at this time, feel free to come and be a part of singing the song and enjoying Music Count Us In for Library News - Barb Bird This Week Is National Children's Week 20th- 30th October Children's week celebrates the right of children to enjoy childhood. It is also a time for children to demonstrate their talents, skills and abilities. "Designated by the nations of the world, Universal Children's Day calls society to a greater response to the plight of many millions of children around the world who are denied the basic necessities of a happy childhood and the education to develop their capacities. It also calls us in Australia to consider those conditions in society which affect the lives and future of our own children." Spend time with your children this week thinking about children all over the world. Talk about similarities and differences. Talk about the rights of all children to be healthy, to be able to discover, to be safe, to speak and to play. Have a fun filled week celebrating the uniqueness of the children in your family. What special talents do they have? Showcase their talents with a family talent show instead of watching the television one night. Treat your children with your time throughout this week. Library Books Thank you to everyone who responded to our call for overdue books to be returned. If the book has been missing for over a term then it is probably time to make amends for the loss of the book. Remember to always use a library bag in order to minimise loss and damage. Book Club Orders should arrive this week. Thank you for your support once again. Some lucky poetry competition winners were lucky enough to redeem their book prize from book club. Only one more issue left for the year.

Respect is important because it shows that we value another as an individual, and therefore honors the personal rights and dignity of the person as a fellow human being. Making good friends is simple when a person shows respect for others. We can also show respect for ourselves and our bodies by showing care in what we do and how we act. Helping In this day and age where we have many things around that are automated, we still need jobs done. Dishwashers don t unpack themselves, or as much as we would like, washing doesn t hang itself up. Help is still required around the home inside and out. Children can be of great help in the running of the household by completing little jobs. Cleaning their bedroom, putting dirty clothes in the basket and for older children hanging out washing or clearing away the table and putting things in higher cupboards. The tip in having children help is have them complete the job before they do the fun thing, otherwise it might get forgotten!!

9 Sports News - Melia Silver Hoop Time This Wednesday we have the senior girls and boys basketball teams competing at the Regional Finals in Traralgon and on Thursday we have the 3 /4 Future Stars basketball team competing in the Dandenong Finals. We wish all the teams the best of luck. A reminder to parents both groups will be leaving school early. State Athletics Yesterday Thomas Wenig and Ava Gaul did an amazing job representing St Joseph s at the State Athletic Championships in Melbourne. Ava unfortunately hit a hurdle in her heat and did not qualify for the finals. Thomas came 5th in the Hurdles with a personal best time of seconds and 4 th in the Triple jump with another personal best of 8.74m. Well done to both children who have shown they are very competitive at this elite level. Hooptime News - Michael Shannon Last Thursday, we sent two well coached 3/4 All Star Hooptime teams to Traralgon to compete in the Regional Finals. All the children played with outstanding sportsmanship and represented the school very well. They were a pleasure to take away for the day and are a phenomenal group of basketballers. Some of the highlights were watching Reagan 'I'm driving it to the hoop' Joyce, Makayla 'I'll guard their hoop' Roberts. Harrison 'The dribbling master' Cant and Alix 'I can play on one leg' Tauru, just to name a few. The competition was extremely good and each team did very well to win one match in each of their pools. We would like to thank the four Grade Six coaches for their impressive coaching and leadership. Our coaches were Bernie Sheehan, Harrison Kent, Matilda Licciardello and Emily Hart. We would also like to thank our team managers and helpers Mark Steggall and Stuart Gowans for giving up their time to assist us on the day.

10 Pasta Making 2017 The grades three to sixes have had another wonderful pasta making day at school, this time making short spaghetti noodles and eating them as Chicken Noodle Soup... Delizioso! A big two days with 14 dozen eggs used in the process! Thank you so much to the families who lent us your pasta machines. We had so many machines that the children only had to share a machine between two or three of them, making it a very hands on and worthwhile activity. Italian News - Melinda Mulqueen Thanks also to our helpers on both days, parents and grandparents who came in and helped, and Bernard Miron and Bernie Rigano who co-ordinated the cooking part of the day. A special thanks to the five Marist students who were doing their community service week. Without all of this help we couldn't possibly churn out so much pasta. Pizzelle Biscotti The grades preps, ones and twos also had a cooking experience in a recent Italian lesson. They made "pizzelle" biscuits, a traditional biscuit with pretty patterns, made using a heated press machine, a bit like a waffle maker. Lots of fun!
