1 Issue 5 January 2017 COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER Committed to Success for All In this issue: Head Teacher s Message Student Absences Cook up a Storm Dates to Remember Duke of Edinburgh Dates A-Z of Science Careers Year 7 MAbles Identification and Information Evening RCS MAble Hub Street Dance Competition Year 9 Debate Comeptition Food Bank Article in the Romford Recorder Message from History Dear Parent/Carer, HEAD TEACHER S MESSAGE In the last few weeks, we have had the official release of school league tables based on the 2016 results and now-validated data. Within Havering, the league tables confirm our performance with regard to each of the Key Performance Indicators. In terms of the newest and now most important measure Progress 8 we were 0.43, which placed us joint first on this measure with Sacred Heart of Mary. Our score of 73% 5A* to C including English and Maths placed us joint second with Campion and our EBacc score of 59% placed us in 2nd place within Havering. It is interesting to compare our performance to schools in other local authorities and pleasing to note that we have performed very well in comparison to similar schools. Below you can see 3 screenshots of league tables on 5A* to C in English and Maths, EBacc and Progress 8. 3 To compare us to similar schools, in terms of prior attainment, please copy and paste the following link into your web browser: school/similar/137396?phase=ks4 Jack now goes onto the regional heat covering the whole of the South East. One of the chefs has offered to mentor him in preparation for this opportunity and invited us to his restaurant in London. I attach tables which summarise your feedback from surveys completed during the Year 9 and Year 10 parents evenings. Thank you for completing these as your feedback is always appreciated. Thank you for your commitment to success for all at Redden Court School. Mr P Ward Head Teacher Jack s entry STUDENT ABSENCES Any time your child is off school, you must call the school and send in a note on their return. Can I also remind you that any student who has an attendance under 90% is now classed as being a persistent absentee. Whilst it is appreciated that illness occasionally affects us all, regular absence due to illness is a cause for concern. In such circumstances it may be necessary for the school to request medical evidence for register purposes. Medical evidence will also be requested when a student is absent, due to illness, in the days immediately before or after any school holiday. Mrs L Sexton Deputy Head Teacher Olivia s entry COOK UP A STORM Olivia and Jack attended the local final of the Cook up a Storm competition run by Future Chef on Monday 9th January at the Quarles campus of Havering college. For 90 minutes the parents and teachers waited nervously for the students to reproduce their two course meal for two people. After the tasting and judging we were invited to join the students; both Jack and Olivia seemed pleased with their results and relieved. The chefs then announced Jack as the winner and a runner up. Jack was praised for the balanced of his dishes and the taste. Olivia also gained valuable feedback with positive comments for her dessert. I was very pleased and proud of them both for their attitude and commitment as they tested out the dishes multiple times at home to perfect them since the school heat. It was an excellent, yet nerve wracking, opportunity to work in an industrial kitchen with industry chefs. Please congratulate both students on their efforts. 3 Miss G Graves Teacher of Technology

6 A-Z of Science Careers U is for: Ultrasound Technician Job Description: The field of ultrasound has many different specialties: cardiac, OB/GYN, ophthalmic, vascular, abdominal, breast, interventional, and more. During examinations, ultrasound technicians enjoy a variety of crucial duties. They must select and capture the best images, take measurements, make calculations and even evaluate the preliminary results. All of this work during their examination directly aids doctors in making the correct diagnosis so that successful treatment can begin. Subjects to Study: You need to complete a diagnostic radiography degree. This takes 3-4 years. To get onto the degree course you need two or three A levels, including physics, chemistry or biology/human biology, along with five GCSEs (grades A-C), including English language, maths and science. YEAR 7 MABLES IDENTIFICATION AND INFORMATION EVENING Parents/Carers of the new Year 7 MAble cohort enjoyed an information evening led by Mr A Henry and Mr J Lodge to learn more about the MAble label and the implications at Redden Court. The event was extremely well attended with both parents/carers and students able to ask key questions to enable them to better understand Levels of Progress (LoPs) and secondary school data. CATS, Teacher assessments and KS2 data have all been used in the identification process. The names of the new cohort have been made visible on G4Schools and teaching staff have been made aware. This group of students, like all students at Redden Court, will enjoy the challenging environment of the classroom and will, hopefully, go on to achieve some of our best results in a few years time. Mr A Henry Assistant Head (MAbles and Pastoral) RCS MABLE HUB It was fantastic to see so many schools join us for our recent MENSA testing as we extended a warm welcome to Bower Park, Marshalls, Gaynes and Sanders for our Year 9 Science Challenge. The event was a real celebration of achievement and it was really encouraging and rewarding to see so many students score highly. Even more impressive was that four of our students were offered MENSA membership based on their result of achieving in the top 2 % of the population. Joshua K 150 (top 2%) Sidney P 148 (top 2%) George A 154 (top 2%) Amy H 150 (top 2%) We now look forward to seeing our Year 7&8 linguists measure up against local schools at the MFL French Challenge on Wednesday 1 st February. A little later on in the month we will also host the RCS Maths Challenge which also promises to be an enjoyable event. Mr A Henry Assistant Head (MAbles and Pastoral) 6

7 STREET DANCE COMPETITION 'On Monday 23rd January, our Street Dance Crew competed in the Havering Secondary Dance Competition. They performed a piece entitled 'Identity' - This was a piece to showcase who they are and what they love doing in a street dance style. We combined their unique and personal approaches to dance and mirrored this with the choice of soundtrack to emphasise each student s personality and individual talents. The students performed extremely well and received some fantastic feedback from the judges who were all professionals and experts in the dance industry. We were especially praised for the number of boys who were part of the dance - more than the rest of the other schools put together! Well done to all involved!' Motion: The house believes that a curfew should be placed upon all those who are under 16 Lennon (for) vs Redgrave (against) Redgrave wins Zoe Wilkin Cerys Heard Connor Plunkett (stand in) Sidney Pain Lydia Storey Motion: The house believes that war is justifiable Branson (for) vs Newton (against) Branson wins Emily Kidd Zaynab Soyege Ewan Kruse Tabitha Seymour Casey Riding George Attrill Motion: The house believes that the internet causes more harm than good Churchill (for) vs Fairfax (against) Fairfax wins Olivia Lynch Bianca Furdui Sam Rowell Erin Brewer Emily Quantock House competition table: Mrs G Lord Head of The Arts Faculty YEAR 9 DEBATE COMPETITION On Tuesday 17th January, the Year 9s took part in their second Inter house debating competition. The students involved really pulled out all the stops and the progress from the first debate to this second debate was astounding. There were so many strong performances and the resilience and determination shown by all students to debate in front of their peers was great to see. I would like to thank all those members of staff that turned up to watch, I know that the students really appreciated it. If you see any of the students please congratulate them, a full list of students that took part and the results are listed below. 8 STUDENTS BRIGHTEN UP THE START OF 2017 FOR VULNERABLE FAMILIES I am incredibly proud of the Year 10 Life Skills group and all the hard work they have put into this project, said Andrea White, Assistant Head of Inclusion. It s really great, said foodbank manager, Mark Reeves. It shows community spirit which is really good in this area. Without donations we cannot do what we do. FRIENDS OF REDDEN COURT RACE NIGHT Following the success in 2016, The Friends of Redden Court are hosting a Race Night on 11th March Tickets are 5; bring your own drinks and nibbles. This year will be adults only in the hope that we can get many more tickets sold. Article from Romford Recorder 19th January 2017 Teenagers from Redden Court School, Cotswold Road, Harold Wood, presented the Harold Hill Foodbank with the an impressive 200 and around 10 crates of goods on Monday. The donation was the result of an appeal run by the students to increase their community involvement as part of an Oxford Cambridge and RSA (OCR) Life Skills diploma. The creative youngsters begun researching charities, visited the foodbank and so inspired, decided to raise funds for it. Last year, the foodbank handed out 2,290 three-day nutritionally balanced emergency food supplies to people in crisis. To help, the students ran an appeal by delivering assemblies to all year groups to encourage them to donate, produced posters and displayed them around the school to maintain awareness. The class also obtained a list of the items most needed by the foodbank and shared the details with parents on the school s communication system. I enjoyed doing the foodbank appeal. I think this charity is interesting, said student Harvey Soane-Shaw, 15. The appeal ran from December 5 to 15 and within that short timeframe the pupils raised an impressive 200 and around 10 crates of non-perishable foods, toiletries and essentials. This is a fantastic event where feedback last year was excellent. Please come along and support the school. You can sponsor a horse and if your horse wins then you win a bottle of wine. You can bet on each race and, again, if your horse wins then you win cash. Some races, and jockeys also, will be auctioned. There is a raffle on the night too. All races are being sponsored. So far we have two sponsors so we are seeking more race sponsors. The programme will offer details about the business and all communications about the event and subsequent letters will promote the business. If you have a business and are happy to sponsor a race we ask for a 50 sponsorship. We hope to raise lots of money for the school. The tickets are on sale on ParentPay; do bring your friends and family. Your support to raise money is so important in the current economic climate. Funds raised have led to purchasing a lighting rig for Performing Arts, funds to support the STEM Club, gym mats for the Gymnastics Club, equipment for Food Technology, Chromebooks for the SEND Department and much more. Please come along support our school and have a great time. Mr J Barrett, School Business Manager 8

9 MESSAGE FROM HISTORY Castles Project Put simply, the department were overwhelmed with the high quality of all castles that were handed in. We had asked all Year 7 students to either construct a model, or design a castle. This is the second year we have incorporated this project into our scheme of work on the Norman Conquest. We had said that we wanted to keep some castles as exemplars to show future years; we were spoilt for choice! A huge thank you to parents/carers as well. It was clear that many of our students had benefitted from support when it came to providing materials etc. for the models. We have kept several castles as exemplars for future years (after much deliberation amongst teachers in the department). We would have liked to keep them all but, sadly, we simply don t have enough room. Krakow Trip 2017 At the time of writing we are in the final preparation stages for this year s trip to Krakow. There are some passports, EHICs and consent forms that haven t been submitted to school yet please send these in as soon as possible. Ypres Trip 2017 Many of you may be aware that the history department runs an annual visit to the Belgian city of Ypres. This was the scene of some of the most intense fighting on the Western Front during the First World War. We traditionally run this trip on the first Friday in July. However, due to a clash on the school calendar, we are unable to do so this year. Instead, we are offering all current Year 9 students the opportunity to visit Ypres on Friday 22 nd September More details to follow. Mr J Benstead, Subject Leader for History 9
