3 FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALS PARENT INFORMATION SESSION Parent information sessions are held at the beginning of every year as a way for teachers to share school and classroom expectations with families. Every child s education is a partnership between the school, teacher and family and we value these opportunities as a way of building these partnerships. Parent information sessions will be held in your child s classroom on Tuesday 6 February. Tuesday 6 February 3:15pm 4:15pm Years 2 & 3 & 4 4:30pm 5:30pm Prep & Year 1 5:45pm 6:45pm Years 5 & 6 YEAR SIX MEMENTO POLO SHIRT We are now commencing the process of ordering senior shirts for our Year Six students. Notes have been ed out. The sublimated polo shirts will have a new design. All Year Six Students names (first name and surname) will be printed on the back of their shirt so please complete the consent form. If the consent form is not completed your child s name will not appear on the shirt. Even if you do not wish to order a shirt, but wish for your child s name to appear on the shirt, the consent form must still be completed and handed in to the school office. The cost of the polo shirt is $ Students may order multiple shirts if they wish. Orders must be paid for and placed at the school office by Friday 16 February. It is important that your child tries on the sample shirts to find the appropriate size. We will also be checking the shirt sizes on all students who order one. Sample shirts will be in 6E as from Monday 29 January, so you are welcome to view these before or after school. The manufacturers suggest purchasing the next size up to allow for growth. SCHOOL CAPTAIN INDUCTION Our school induction assembly for our school student leaders (School, House, Music, LOTE, Library, ICT, Student Councillors and Senior Leaders) will be held in the school hall at 9:15am on Friday 9 February Parents are welcome to attend. EMERGENCY CONTACTS Parents please update your emergency contact numbers if and when your personal or work situation changes. ABSENCES Please advise the school of all absences including if your child will be late to school. This can be done via various communication methods. Phone the school absence line on or - absences@warrroadss.eq.edu.au, if your child is away from school. This can also be done via Qparents if you have registered. The school has now implemented the same day alert system via a SMS message to parents mobile phone. You can respond via text for the absence notification. If you believe your child is at school and this is a possible mistake please call the school immediately. Please be specific for the date, time and reason why your child is away, we do not assume they are away for the same reason the next day unless stated. Parents are reminded that schools have a legal responsibility to follow up when students are absent from school without explanation. Class rolls are legal documents and teachers are accountable for maintaining accurate records, including reasons for student absences. Student achievement is affected by absenteeism. Parents are asked to help maximise student potential by ensuring their children are at school on time each day, ready to learn. Members of administration are available to discuss any on-going concerns you may have regarding absences. HOLIDAYS IN SCHOOL TIME Parents are reminded that if you wish to take more than 10 days of holidays during school time, you have to make an appointment to see the Principal in order to get exemption from school. Ring the office and make an appointment.

4 We ask you as much as possible to use the provided school holidays to have your family holidays as students have 12 weeks of school holidays per year. It is not possible nor is it appropriate for the school to provide work for students who are on holidays for extended time. Teaching is called teaching because it is not just doing worksheets. It is an interactive process where prior learning is built upon to form new concepts, skills and knowledge. There is no substitute for the teaching process. CYBER SAFETY SESSION Last week our Year 4 Technology For Learning classes and their parents had a presentation from the Department of Education s Technology Branch. The focus was on staying safe online, managing your personal information, and awareness of your digital footprint. This very informative session was well received by students, teachers and parents, and all participants left with some food for thought and useful tips. On Thursday 8 March, the rest of the Year 4 classes and all Year 5 and 6 students will participate in this session. We are also offering another parent session. I strongly encourage parents to attend this session if you have the time. There are some important key messages to help assist you in keeping your children safe online. The parent session will be held on Thursday 8 March in the hall from 2:00-3:00pm. Please RSVP kcoom4@eq.edu.au by Monday 5 March if you can attend. WARRIGAL ROAD STATE SCHOOL DETE FACEBOOK PAGE In an endeavour to look at new ways to communicate information to parents, we have established a school Facebook page. If you (Parents Only) have a personal Facebook account all you need to do is search for the official page which can be found by the title Warrigal Road State School DETE (has school logo). Then like the page and you will receive information/reminders about school events through your personal Facebook account. As students under the age of 13 are not permitted by law to have a Facebook account, please be aware that this is NOT for students to access. TYRONE BRUCE, CATHY COLEMAN, KAREN COOMBES, ALLAN THARENOU FINANCE NEWS TERM 1 PAYMENTS We have now sent out all Resource Scheme and Year level excursion and incursion letters and a statement which showed the total amount owing.
