I d like to say thank you to our wonderful Ashwell State School teachers for all that they do. Mrs de Mey, Mr Reyne, Mrs Denton and Mrs Hinrichsen, your work is outstanding, always completed enthusiastically and it is highly appreciated. Our teachers put in a lot of hours preparing lessons and finding and making teaching materials, reading up on the latest research-based teaching practices and organising excursions and camps so thank a teacher today! A staffing update to share Nicolee Eiby will resign from the Department of Education and Training as of the end of 2016, as she has secured a job from the beginning of 2017 in the independent sector. As a result, the position of principal at Ashwell State School will be advertised and a principal will be appointed on a permanent basis. Further updates about this matter will follow. SCHOOL UNIFORM At Ashwell SS we have high expectations around kids behaviour and learning. The expectations include school uniform. If your child is unable to wear the full school uniform on a particular day for whatever reason, please write a note for your child s teacher. Otherwise, they must wear the school uniform including school shorts/skorts/skirts and school hat. Students will not be able to play outside if they don t have a hat at school. If you need to purchase school uniforms you can do so on Wednesdays between 9am 10am. LIFE EDUCATION VAN The Life Education Van will be at Ashwell State School this Monday! Please return notes and make payments for this as a matter of urgency. If your child has not returned their money and form by today they have been sent home another note in case it has been lost etc. The cost is $6.00 and must be paid for students to attend the valuable lessons being held in the van. There is also a session that parents are welcome to attend before school on Monday. Please support the Life Education Van as their school visits are subsidized, they are not for profit and fully endorsed by the Department of Education. HEARING AND SIGHT TESTS Teachers participated in professional development on the student free day earlier this term and hearing and sight tests were discussed. Specialists recommend that children have their hearing and sight tested every two years. If your child hasn t had this done lately, you may wish to look into it. Hearing and sight tests every two years are covered by Medicare SCHOOL LEADERSHIP The school captain, school vice-captain, sports captain and Indigenous captain for 2017 will be selected this term and announced on the school Awards Night on 6 December. Year 5 students will need to nominate for the position/s that they wish to apply for and prepare a speech to present to the school community. A special assembly will be held at 8:50am on Thursday 24 November for the speeches to take place. Voting will happen in classes following the assembly.

2 OWLS REWARDS DAY This term we have booked a big Slip n Slide and a jumping castle for our OWLS rewards day on Thursday 8 December. Please keep checking your child s diary to ensure they are getting their stamps each day. Remember if they miss three stamps across the duration of the term they will not be invited to attend the rewards day. If students are not invited to the rewards day they are still expected to attend school on this day and activities will be arranged for them. THE ZONES OF REGULATION Teachers participated in professional development on the Student Free Day about a program called the Zones of Regulation. We will be using the program as part of our teaching in the health curriculum in For the last part of 2016, some small focus groups will participate in the program. You will receive a note today if your child has been selected to be in the groups. PRE-PREP INDUCTION DAYS Don t forget our pre-prep induction afternoons from 1:40 2:40pm. The dates are below: 3 November November December 2016 During the induction afternoons, parents are invited to stay for a tea or coffee. For more information, please see Mrs de Mey or call the school office. REMEMBRANCE DAY This year we will mark Remembrance Day with a minute s silence on Friday 11 November. We will pause our day in memory of all soldiers past and present who have served our country in conflicts and peace-keeping missions around the world. Remember badges are available from the school office for $2.00 and can be bought between now and Friday 11/11. SCHOOL CAMP Well, school camp is done and dusted for another year, but what a great three days we had! The students (and the staff) are feeling a bit weary after enjoying the time spent with friends, achieving success in activities and experiencing new things. The activities that the children participated in were circus skills, night games, body boarding, fishing, beach games, a movie night and canoeing. We were very well fed by the great staff at the Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre and the kids learnt just as much about looking after themselves and working together as they did about beach safety and each activity. A HUGE thank you to Mrs de Mey for organising the camp and Mrs Maguire, Mr Reyne and Mrs de Mey for giving up time with their families to attend the camp. See the next pages for some photos! DAY FOR DANIEL 2016 Thanks to everyone who supported Day for Daniel today by wearing and red shirt and donating a gold coin to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. 6 Year 5-6 Class Update Students in year 5 and 6 have been participating in a science unit about Electricity and making circuits. We have been using the Primary Connections resource called It s Electrifying! Students have learnt about materials that conduct and materials that insulate. They have learnt how to make a closed circuit to light up a light bulb and sound a buzzer. The year 5 students have been focusing on the ways in which light travels and angles of reflection. The students have really enjoyed this unit of work and have loved working with the electrical equipment. They have even been spending their lunch times showing younger students how it works! Year 5 students are conducting an investigation about light reflection in the next couple of weeks. They need to bring in a shoebox from home to complete the task. Please send a shoebox with your child in year 5 as soon as you can. The students are also completing a technology unit in which they are designing and creating a bag to carry a personal item such as a lunch box or an ipad. Students are able to use recycled materials provided by the school to make their bag. They are also able to bring 2 items of old clothing from home to make their bag with if they wish. They are really looking forward to this project and have just put the finishing touches on their designs.
