2 THE SCHOOL Brighton College is one of England s leading schools and the oldest public school in Sussex. The College comprises the Senior School, educating 1,000 pupils aged 13 18, and the Lower School, educating 100 pupils aged The Brighton College family of schools also includes Brighton College Prep School, St Christopher s and Handcross Park, educating a further 1,150 children aged 3 to 13. Overseas, the College has opened Brighton College Abu Dhabi and Brighton College Al Ain in the UAE, and Brighton College Bangkok in Thailand. Examination results are strong and the College is among the highest performing schools in England at GCSE and A-level. In 2016, 91.6% of grades at GCSE were at A* and A, whilst 97.1% of grades at A-level were at A*, A or B. The last five years have also been the best five for Oxbridge success in the 168-year history of the College, with 39 pupils securing offers in The Sunday Times awarded Brighton College the title of UK Independent School of the Year Tatler magazine awarded Richard Cairns the title of Head Master of the Year And Brighton College was named the United Kingdom Independent School of the Year (Independent Schools Awards). In 2014 The Week magazine named Brighton College the Most Forward Looking School in Britain. In 2015, there was a full ISI inspection in which the College was awarded the top grade in every single category, including an Exceptional for Teaching and Learning. There has also been major investment in new facilities over the last ten years. This has seen the construction of four major buildings on the main site, a new cricket pavilion and a major sports hub on our Jubilee Ground site. Brighton has also purchased the former site of Roedean Junior School, allowing for the relocation of the Pre-Prep School, and the expansion of the College on the main site. A new boarding house opened in September 2013 in the Main Quad which, together with a new Entrance Tower completed in December 2014, completes the original Thomas Jackson designs of the 1880s. A new Music School opened in January A new teaching block is under construction (and will open in September 2017), to be followed by a new Centre for Sport and Science (due for completion in September 2019), which will include eighteen state-of-the-art laboratories. 3 THE CITY The College enjoys its location in Brighton, one of Britain s youngest cities and one of the most vibrant in Europe. It is close to the beautiful South Downs, within easy travelling distance of London (about 50 minutes by train), and about 30 minutes from Gatwick Airport. Portsmouth, Newhaven and the Channel Tunnel provide accessible links with the Continent. Brighton is also a university city, and the College has good links with both the University of Sussex and Brighton University. 3

4 THE ROLE The College is seeking to appoint a Boarding Matron from August 2018 Responsible to: The Bursar via the Director of Boarding Job Overview The purpose of this role is to support the boarding house staff to ensure the smooth running of School House, a senior boys boarding house for pupils aged The focus of this role is pastoral; time will be spent speaking to the boys and helping them cope with the myriad demands of a boarding school life. In addition to this pastoral care you will provide administrative support to the School House staff as well as reviewing rooms and identifying areas which may require attention for maintenance. Flexibility is key. Key areas of responsibility: To liaise with boarding house staff on any matters concerning the pupils and their welfare Dealing with issues at the start of the day, e.g. boys late out of bed due to illness Visiting boys rooms regularly to check they are tidy and orderly; helping boys develop strategies if they find this difficult Being a presence in the house at break and lunch times and whenever possible when academic staff are teaching Making sure the boys are regularly putting laundry in on the correct days To work with the laundry staff to ensure that all bed linen and clothing is laundered and returned to houses regularly and promptly Oversee the bed change on a fortnightly basis Liaise with the cleaners to make sure that the boys are keeping rooms to good standard and deal with any that need attention Making sure the house and rooms are clean and tidy for visiting parents and VIPs Report any maintenance issues that have arisen and record them in the maintenance log Liaising with the Health Centre when there are ill students Taking students to hospital, dental and other health associated appointments Meeting with the boys to discuss any ideas to improve the House or to solve any problems Sewing for the boys Organising weekly supplies for the kitchen and snacks for regular House events Printing of newsletter and school notices for display and maintaining the noticeboards 4 BRIGHTON COLLEGE SUPPORT VACANCY

5 Balancing petty cash and assisting with budget management Collection of post from the security gate and distribution to boys Collection of papers from staff room and distribution to boys Collating Saturday activities Liaising with catering regarding any special meal requirements Collating all the information from parents, guardians and students regarding exeat and holiday arrangements Being available during the day to chat to the boys (especially at the start of the year when new boarders are settling in) Ensuring staff are aware of pupil birthdays and arranging a cake Helping the boys to organise and shop for House events such as the At Home, Xmas Dinner etc Keeping a code register for the individual room safes and ensure they are distributed and changed as required Maintaining accurate labels for pupil room plates, laundry cupboards and pigeon holes Helping with the general administration of the House Any other duties as required To provide medical cover for the boys with the support of the Health Centre, liaising closely with the Senior Nurse on all health matters pertaining to boarders To help maintain discipline with College and House rules and guidelines To help with the house lettings by checking rooms, reporting damage, and ensuring that the rooms are then ready for the boarders to return To help with signage on boys doors and notice boards etc Be present at Open Days and Taster Days as required Meet prospective parents when they visit the House. Person specification Warm and helpful manner Highly organised Good IT skills Self-motivation with a can-do, positive attitude. 6 Hours: 40 hours per week term time only (35 weeks) from 8.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. The successful candidate will also be required to work up to four Saturdays per year to cover open mornings plus an additional ten days during the school holidays and the occasional Sunday to support College events or to cover pupils return at the beginning of term. Holidays: 20 days holiday paid pro rata plus bank holidays to be taken during the school holidays.
