There has been a healthy balance between academics and physical ac vity. Thanks to our PAC, students have had the opportunity to experience winter ac vi es at Apex. Intermediate students are learning basic basketball skills and par cipa ng in games with district schools. And our One to One Reading Program is again taking place pairing adult readers with our students to build on reading apprecia on and fluency. The parking lot has become a safety concern first thing in the morning and at dismissal. We ask that parents be vigilant when dropping off children or parking. It can become very congested. Also, please do not drop off on the sidewalk area leading to the school entrance. There is a sign placed there now as a reminder. Our children and families use that sidewalk o en. Thank you for your coopera on. Second term report cards will be sent home in early March. You will have the opportunity to meet with teachers if necessary. 2 Page 2 ANTI-BULLYING / PINK SHIRT DAY Wednesday February 24 students are asked to dress in pink to recognize Anti Bullying Day. This day is a great opportunity for families to discuss bullying behaviors and how together we can stop these type of behaviors. Throughout the day classes may share their knowledge of bullying and how to deal with bullying behaviors. HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS February 24 we are fortunate to have one of the Globetrotters visiting Carmi. Students will be able to witness the talent and skill and learn about the experience of becoming a Globetrotter. Thanks to Ms. Persson for organizing this! EARLY DISMISSAL DAY / REPORT CARDS Term 2 report cards will sent home on Monday March 7th. Please return the signed report card envelope as soon as possible and contact your child s teacher if you wish to set up an appointment. Thursday March 10th is an early dismissal day. Students will be dismissed at 12:35 and will have lunch at home. BASKETBALL The Grade 4/5 Girls and Boys Carmi Basketball Teams have been practicing twice a week since the winter break and are really excited for their first game January 28 against Parkway. The teams will be playing four afterschool games against Parkway and Queen s Park schools. Mr. Bailey, Ms. Harvie and Ms. Persson have noticed the teams have come a long way in both their defensive and offensive skills and are demonstrating good sportsmanship. The coaches are really looking forward to see the students put what they have learned into action. Come out and support the teams if you can! Thurs. Jan 28 Carmi at Parkway Wed. For the safety of all of our students, staff, StrongStart families, volunteers, guests and community users of our school we ask that parents DO NOT send peanut / nut products to school. We understand that this may require some effort and thought for snack and lunch alternatives but we ask that you consider the health risk to others and refrain from sending peanut and nut products to school. 3 BREAKFAST CLUB Page 3 Carmi is fortunate to have a daily breakfast program providing delicious breakfasts to all students each morning at 8:15 am. The club also provides a chance for children to connect with others and socialize. Research indicates the importance of a nutritious breakfast to children being ready to learn and to be successful in school. The club is located at the entrance to the school in a small room to the right. A BIG thank you to Donna Van Egmond for her hard work and dedication to the club. APEX TUBING & CROSS COUNTRY SKIING Our students had great fun tubing and cross country skiing. Thank you again to PAC for supporting these awesome field trips! The HUB provides support and referrals in areas such as childcare, parenting, health and nutrition, literacy, early intervention, counselling, and much more. Available for drop in at Queen s Park Elementary Wednesday mornings 9:00 12:00 and Parkway Elementary Thursday mornings 9:00 12:00. 5 Page 5 KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION Children born in 2011 are eligible to enter kindergarten in September Parents, who feel their child is not yet ready for kindergarten, may defer enrollment for one year. Please contact Wendy Hyer ( ) at the School Board Office for information on this. Placement in your neighborhood school kindergarten is based on your address and registration date. The earlier you register, the more likely your child will attend a school close to your home. TRANSFER REQUESTS SCHOOL YEAR The window for students requesting transfers from their catchment / current school to another school in School District No. 67 for the September 2016 / 2017 school year is 8:00am, February 1, 2016 to 4:00pm, April 15, Transfer requests received prior to February 1 will be date / time stamped as February 1, 2016, 8:00am and transfer requests received after April 15 may not be considered until September Although a sibling s attendance at a school will be given priority as per Choice and Flexibility Policy #305, it should not be assumed that the transfer is approved. A transfer request still needs to be completed and must go through the transfer process. If you are unsure, please check with your school secretary. FRENCH IMMERSION PROGRAM: All applications for Grade 6 French Immersion must be submitted to the School Board Office prior to 12:00 noon on Monday Feb. 1, 2016 HOMESTAY FAMILIES NEEDED School District No. 67 Requires homestay Families for the School Year School District No. 67 is looking for prospective homestay families in Penticton and Summerland to host international students for one year, one semester, or on a short term basis. Placements are needed for both male and female students from Germany, China, Mexico Columbia, Spain, Japan and Korea who will be attending one of our local secondary or middle schools. Host families must be English-speaking and have a desire to welcome the student into their home as part of the family. Close proximity to a secondary or middle school is an asset. Host families are expected to provide: a fully furnished private bedroom; a clean, safe, caring environment conducive to student studies; meals: the opportunity to participate in Canadian family life; and a completed criminal record search for all adult members residing in the home. School District No. 67 will provide: support and guidance by a homestay coordinator who will monitor the student/homestay experience; monthly compensation at $750.00; and temporary placement/respite homes for host families, if required, for holidays and emergencies.
