1 Wider Learning Bulletin 8 02 / 02 / 18 Twyford Trust Student Leadership day On Tuesday 16th January students from Twyford, William Perkin and Ealing Fields met for a day to talk about student leadership. We started off the day with each school giving a small presentation about particular areas of student leadership in their own school. As our partner schools are at different stages of developing their student leadership teams, they had the opportunity to ask questions to Twyford KS5 students about their journey with student leadership involvement. We are very proud of our student leadership systems at Twyford but it was really interesting to see how the other schools are developing their student leadership roles and we certainly picked up some ideas that we can learn from. The day was a great way to bring all three schools in the trust together to recognise the importance of student leadership and share best practice. Katharine Biggs Head Girl School Council School Council Meetings: The school councils met once again last week to discuss different areas of the school. Your form reps all got together with all of the different information you fed back to them during tutor time and voiced both improvements but also positive feedback to us. Points raised included the introduction of music at lunchtimes to the improvement of the cafe food range. We will now be closely working with SLT members, Heads of Specialisms and any relevant staff to try and implement some of the ideas you put forward. Over the coming term a few things mentioned from last school council meetings are going to be introduced so watch out for that. Finally keep all of your suggestions coming through as we love to hear what you have to say. Katharine Biggs

This was a great experience for students to visit such a fantastic gallery and will help them to prepare for their final exam. Miss Brady Wednesday 7 th February - 3:30-5:15pm Act 1 Scene 7 (all parents, all child roles) Act 1 Scene 8 (Dewey, all child roles) As you will be aware, we are taking part in the National Theatre Connections 2018 project. The rehearsals are going very well and myself and the cast absolutely love our play The Ceasefire Babies. 3 Athletics: Well done to the Year 8 Indoor Athletics teams at the Ealing Championship The girls were placed 3 rd and the boys were 2 nd The Year 7 girls won and will now represent Ealing at the West London Finals good luck! Sport Report Inter-form: Well done to all Yr 10 students who took part in Basketball Inter-form last week. Congratulations to Ripon who came 1 st place. And Yr 12 students who took part in Netball Inter-form this week. Well done to Wells who came 1 st place. Netball: Well done to the Year 11 Netball Team (Lara Hedge, Rose Ward, Hannah Saxby, Jemima Prior, Natasha Farquharson, Emma Olsson Gisleskog, Scarlett Bulatovic, Hazel Miles, Joy Chofar, Scarlett Johnson and Blessing Faleyimu) who played a brilliant match and won 19-7 against London Free School, it was a superb game! The KS4 netball squads had a great time watching England vs Australia at the Copper box in Stratford Monday 22 nd January. Unfortunately England lost, but it was a great experiences for the girls.

4 D of E Training day History Scholars The Duke of Edinburgh Training Day (Bronze and Silver) on Saturday the 27 th January was a success! Students undertook a number of activities including first aid, camp stove safety, map work and route planning. They are certainly feeling much more prepared for their expeditions later on in the year. Mr Hickey and Miss Brady Senior History Scholar debates We have had three senior history scholar debates so far this term: British queens have been far more successful than British Kings Capitalism is the root of modern rage European settlers have brought more harm than good to the Americas All three were hotly contested, especially the last one! Please note that these debates are open to everyone to attend and are good fun to watch even if you don t feel up to challenging the debaters! They take place on a fortnightly basis in the Community room on Monday lunchtimes. The next one is on Monday 5 th February. Mrs Easton

5 Senior TFG Weekend Away On Friday 5th of January, 43 year students embarked on the STFG weekend away. For both old and new STFG students, the weekend proved to be a fantastic experience at Oakwood Youth Challenge. Friday evening included a talk, followed by a film; Ms Fruzza's introduction to 'The J Factor' with the question "why did Jesus have to die?. It was fascinating to hear the staff testimonies over the weekend and learn more about their faith and our own. Saturday boasted rock climbing and high ropes followed by two more brilliant talks - Mr Douglas with "Where's Jesus in the old testament?" and Mrs Dixon from William Perkin with "was Jesus God or was he man?. We also had a surprise visit from Pastor Daniel, our previous chaplain! Then from midnight was late night worship. Prayer and songs echoed through the site until after 2:30am, and everyone who attended was incredibly encouraged. A special thank you goes to the band, who played amazingly. Sunday finished with an inspirational talk from our cheery new Chaplain, Father David, with "Is Jesus still relevant today." From heated games of Uno to falling off Rock walls, the weekend was a huge success and enjoyed by all of us. A big thank you to Mr Douglas for organising the event and Ms Fruzza, Mr Barratt, Ms Evans and Father David for joining us on our weekend away. Charlotte Larson York Chaplaincy Captain

7 Languages UK Linguistics Olympiads: This will take place on Monday 5 th February in A02 and A05 after school. Approximately 50 students in Year 11, 12 and 13 are taking part. The main focus is solving linguistics riddles. Year 8 Quiz: Our Year 13 MFL rep Ben Biddell has made some lovely displays on the MFL noticeboards. This includes The Year 8 Quiz about Mali - a Francophone country (up in A06) can be downloaded from Copia and the deadline to return the form to Miss César is the 2 nd of March. There will be prizes for those who attempt the bonus question. Day Trips to the BFI: Our Year 12 Spanish class went on a day trip to the BFI with Ms Meechan on 19/01 for a talk and film In the Shadow of the Spanish Civil War: Pan s Labyrinth and 13 Roses Our Year 12 French class went to the BFI 31/01 with Miss César for a film related workshop Le Cinéma Français: Contemporary Dramas and the Nouvelle Vague Spelling Bee: Please can the Year 7 Students involved in the Spelling Bee ensure they attend practice with Ms Meechan in D06 from 1.45 to 2pm every Wednesday.
