1 DAYBORO STATE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER No: 10_ 27 March 2018 Dear Parents and Caregivers, This Thursday we finish our first busy term. Our students are to be congratulated for the ease in which they have settled into learning for this year with routines now well established. Your support, as our partners in learning has set us in good stead for a successful three terms ahead. I would also like to thank the P&C for the very successful Easter Raffle and to the many families who donated and purchased tickets to make this once again, a great fundraiser for our school. Thank you to Craig Doyle Real Estate for the sponsorship of the raffle, and to Ms Karen McCarthy and her team of workers who once again presented the prizes beautifully. Congratulations to all the prize winners! Also, a big thank you is extended to Darren Grimwade and Belgravia Leisure who partnered with us to hold a very successful Family Funday Sunday. Many people enjoyed the sunshine, the water activities, the music by our very own Sharryn Bell and the varied games and amusements on offer. Hopefully, the day will make a good contribution towards our swimming programs in Once again, our P&C did a terrific job in organising the BBQ well done everyone! Finally, as it is the end of the term, please take the opportunity to enjoy the two week break with family and friends. Students return to school on Tuesday 17 April. School Attendance Thankyou to our school community for the excellent school attendance during Term 1. An attendance target of 95% has been set for schools in the North Coast Education Region. As a school we have achieved an overall attendance for Term 1 of 94.40% which is very close to the overall target. Attendance rates for individual classes are listed below. Absence notifications can also be forwarded to the school via QParents. Staff News I wish to advise that Ms Leanne Anderson (1/2A) will be on Long Service Leave in Week 2 of next term. She will be replaced by Ms Colleen McNamee for the week. Joining us from this week and for term 2 is an additional Support Teacher in Mr Tim Buckney. Mr Buckney is from Deception Bay North State School and will work in the intervention, curriculum and special needs areas of the school. We welcome Tim to our school. School Holidays, Pupil Free Days and Public Holidays Term 1 finishes this Thursday 29 March. School resumes for students on Tuesday 17 April. Please note that Monday 16 April is an additional student free day put in place to assist with transport logistics associated with the Commonwealth Games. Our school ANZAC Day assembly will be held on Monday 23 April in place of our normal assembly and the school will be closed on ANZAC Day on 25 April. The school will also be closed for Labour Day on Monday 7 May. ANZAC Day Our first assembly in Term 2 on Monday 23 April at 9.00am is our ANZAC Day ceremony. Parents and community members are most welcome to join us for this service. The school band and choir will perform at this ceremony. Our School Captains, the School Band and School Choir will also participate in the community ANZAC Day service on Wednesday 25 April at the Dayboro Showgrounds. More details about our ANZAC Day commemorations will be provided in the first newsletter next term. Coles Sports for Schools Our School has signed up for the Coles Sports for Schools Program for For every $10 spent at Coles, customers will receive one Sports for Schools Voucher. Simply return the vouchers to the collection box in the School foyer. Vouchers will be issued up until Tuesday April 3 please ensure that all vouchers are returned to school by April 30 to enable them to be returned in time in exchange for our new sports equipment. Thank you to everyone who has supported this fundraising initiative for our school. Bus Zone in McKenzie Street Moreton Bay Regional Council will be undertaking works in the holiday replacing existing signs and providing line marking in order to clarify the use of the bus zone and turn-a-round area. As stated by Sgt Ken Robinson in last week s newsletter, traffic is able to drive through the area, but cars cannot stop to let children off or do a pick up. The final design is in the photograph below. Finally, as Term 1 comes to an end it is time to say farewell to Chappy Bee. She is sadly leaving us to take up a Chaplaincy position at a school closer to her home. We would like to thank her for being an important part of our Dayboro community over the last 2 years and for her caring support of our students, staff and parents. 3 FROM THE DEPUTY S DESK HOMEWORK HELP IS HERE! Well it s hard to believe Term 1 is nearly over. In review it s been a very busy term. Parent Information sessions, Student Leader Inductions, Harmony Day, Ice Cream Day, Pancake Breakfast, Parent Teacher Interviews, Dayboro Fun Day, the Easter Raffle and our P-2 Easter Hat parade this Thursday to name a few. At all these events I am reminded of what a wonderful sense of community you have here at Dayboro State School and I applaud the efforts of everyone who helps make our school a rewarding and exciting place for your children to learn at. GOTCHA AWARD Congratulations to Tripp R 5/6H for winning the GOTCHA awards this week. Well done Tripp. Reminders for Next Term. *School Photos will be on Friday 20 th April This is the first week back after the holidays. IMPORTANT: Children will need to bring Band, Choir and Yr 6 Sports Captains- Sports Uniforms to change into if they are a part of these groups. If any students from Year 1-3 are wishing to join the Little Dayboro Voices, we rehearse on Monday lunchtimes. We would love to see you there. Dayboro Voices (Senior Choir) There will be rehearsal on the first day of Term 2, Tuesday 17 th April. Our next performances will be the following week for ANZAC Day. Monday 23 rd April School Assembly 9:00 Wednesday 25 th April ANZAC Day Service, Dayboro Showgrounds. Choir students will wear their formal school uniform for these performances. Enjoy the Easter break and see you after the holidays. CURRICULUM MATTERS What do you know about the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics? The Australian Curriculum: Mathematics provides students with essential mathematical skills and knowledge in number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability. It develops the numeracy capabilities that all students need in their personal, work and civic life, and provides the fundamentals on which mathematical specialties and professional applications of mathematics are built. The curriculum focuses on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. These proficiencies enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing mathematical strategies to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently. The activities available for students had a focus on The Commonwealth Games which will take place on the Gold Coast during the Easter break. Students were very keen to construct items that could be used in our Mini Commonwealth Games events including basketball, tennis and javelin. We also had a few teams of students work together to complete a Commonwealth Games themed scavenger hunt. We also used Coji robots to perform a synchronised performance. This is now the last week of term. All overdue books need to be returned to the library as soon as possible. Students in year 4, 5 and 6 will be able to borrow books to continue their reading during the holiday break. Remember that book bags are required when carrying books to and from school. Upcoming events: National Simultaneous Storytime on May 23 rd. Book Fair from May 25 th - May 30 th. The theme for Book Fair will be PAWS for Books. Thank you for your continued support, Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H. A reminder that our newsletter is published each week on our website. From now on it will be on white paper with colour photos so you can see maps, and smiling faces more clearly. 4

Date Claimers Pine Rivers District Cross Country 5 th May Please check the Pine Rivers District website for any updated information or date changes Awards Week 10 2/3T PE Class of the Week Most improved class for Cross Country practice. PE Students of the week Ivy S (2MO):- For always trying her best in Cross Country training. Riley D (1-2):- Fantastic effort in his Cross Country Practice. Sick Notes As Physical Education is a curriculum area, it is a requirement that if your child is unable to participate a note, call or is sent to the school. Please communicate this information to myself, the classroom teacher or the office. District Representative Congratulations to Kurt J who made the Pine Rivers under 12 s Rugby League team. Kurt will compete at Regional trials in Term 2. As a school we wish him luck in the next stage. Cross Country Trials Students born will begin doing some trials during PE. The top five students that meet the District times will be offered a position in the 2018 Dayboro Cross Country team. These students will run at the District trials on May 4 th Distances that students will be timed on the following distances. 10years (2008) 2 kms, 11, 12 s yrs (2007, 2006) 3kms Garth Mathieson (PE teacher), gmath12@eq.edu.au P&C NEWS The Dayboro Community Sunday Fun Day was a terrific success on Sunday 25 March. The Executive of the P&C would like to extend a sincere thanks to Councillor Darren Grimwade for organising the event, the staff at the Dayboro Pool for their great help before, during and after the event, as well as our local Dayboro Butcher and Bakery who supplied us with wonderful bread and buns, and some very yummy sausages and meat patties. The other big Thank You is to all the P&C members and school families who were invaluable in all the lead up work organising and ordering all that was needed, food preparation the day before, as well as to everyone who lent a hand on the BBQs, serving food and handling purchase monies, through to staying back to help clean up and take away gear. This event was only a success because of all your combined input, effort and time! The proceeds of this event will assist with swimming activities for our students at the Dayboro Pool in The Easter Raffle was drawn at Assembly on Monday morning 26 March. As we had such a bounty of donated chocolates and other treats, we were able to draw more prizes than were originally advertised, and there were clearly both happy student and parent faces at Assembly. Hopefully this will not lead to too many tummy aches, so please do eat your extra Easter winnings in moderation. A big Thank You to all the volunteers who assisted with the wrapping of the Easter Raffle hamper and other various sized prize bags, as well as the Book Club last week. Without your valuable contributions of time and effort, these sort of fundraising activities would simply not happen, nor be as successful as they have shown themselves to be. Keep up the good work everyone and we always welcome newcomers to assist in such activities! Thanks also to Jane and Virginia who have offered to take up the role of School Banking for P&C much appreciated! School banking will continue to be on Wednesdays. POSITION VACANT the 2018 P&C Committee still has a vacant Fundraising Coordinator position. Please consider helping your school and the P&C if you have the skills, enthusiasm and time to carry out this vital role. P&C s primary focus is fundraising to help improve the school and its facilities so as to benefit our current and future enrolled kids. This role could be fulfilled by a keen individual or even a small group of people who are willing to help make a difference. Other members of P&C cannot be expected to do this role on top of all their other duties, so we really need your help in filling this role for our school this year. The funeral service for P&C member and school parent Karen Greinke was held on Friday 23 March. It was a lovely celebration of her life and the very large number of people who attended was a wonderful testament to Karen s place within our community and her many family and friends, and was a fitting and supportive send off. Remember that P&C s next meeting will be on Tuesday 17 April at 6.30pm in the school staffroom. P&C also wishes all Families and Staff a very safe and happy Easter and school holidays break.
