1 5-8 Campus Chronicle 15 th of April 2016 Dear Parent / Guardian, Yarrawonga College P-12 has a very strong and respectful tradition of recognising ANZAC Day and the sacrifices made by all Australian soldiers who have fought to protect our country and quality of life. This year, the College will once again participate in the ANZAC Day ceremonies and services at Mulwala and Yarrawonga. Students and staff will attend the Dawn Service at 6am at ClubMulwala, march as part of both the Mulwala and Yarrawonga ceremonies, and a wreath from each Campus will be laid at the Yarrawonga Ceremony. We receive incredibly generous, ongoing support from the Yarrawonga and Mulwala RSL and ClubMulwala, and participation in the ANZAC Day parade is one small but important way we can give back to them and thank them for their support of us. We would love to have your student/s march with us in either or both of the parades on Monday, April 25. If they would like to march, they will need to assemble at Hick s Butchery, Mulwala by 9:15am (for the 9:30am Mulwala Parade) and at the front of our P-4 Campus in Piper St by 10:45 (for the 11am Yarrawonga Parade). STUDENTS WILL NEED TO BE IN FULL SCHOOL UNIFORM to participate in either march, as they will be representing YCP-12. Parents or guardians will be responsible for collecting their student/s at the conclusion of each march. Each year, we ve been able to make YCP-12 s representation at and support of each service bigger than the year before, and we hope that 2016 will be the best year yet. If you are going to be in Yarrawonga on Monday, April 25, please consider encouraging your child to march with us. 2 IT IS GREAT SEEING YOU BACK, refreshed and ready for another exciting term back at school. We trust that everyone has had a great holiday. Welcome to Term 2! It s going to be another busy, exciting and rewarding one. Over the last six months or so, staff across the College have been working on identifying the Learning Values of our College. I m very pleased to announce that at Yarrawonga College P-12, Learning is Challenging, Engaging, Cooperative and Collaborative, it fosters Creativity and Continuous Improvement. These Values reflect the learning that is happening, and that we aspire to keep developing across our College. They sit alongside our personal College Values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Cooperation and Integrity. Our Year 5 and Year 6 Camps are coming up rapidly this term. Year 5 students are off to the 15 Mile Creek Outdoor School in two groups, from May 16 to 20 and May 23 to 27. Our Year 6 students will travel to Melbourne for their City Camp experience from May 25 to 27. In the week prior to the first Year 5 Camp, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will sit their annual NAPLAN tests. These tests provide students, and their teachers with some important feedback on student learning. Student Leaders at the 5-8 Campus are about to start an exciting program of Community Service as part of their Leadership Program. Across the last 9 weeks of Term 2, they will spend 2 hours per week at a community organisation, helping out and building their own skills in the process. The cubby houses, one built by some of our Years 5 and 6 boys in 2015, and the other by Adam Dodd s VCE Building & Construction class, and erected at the 5-8 Campus by the Building and Construction students, are almost completed. The next step will involve some of our Workshop students painting and beautifying them. And lastly, the Campus is seeking donations of any old, unloved and no-longer-played musical instruments such as guitars, ukuleles, tambourines, bongo drums for our Years 5 and 6 students lunchtime Music Club. And we would love to source some cow or sheep manure to help develop our vegie garden. Donations of musical instruments can be made to the Campus Office, and please phone us during the school day if you can help out at all with manure for our vegie garden. Next Wednesday there will be NO school breakfast so please EAT BREAKFAST before you come to school.

3 YEAR 5 & 6 S CAMP IS COMING UP Year 6 s 25 th -27 th May 2016 Departing; 8:00am Return: 3:00pm Full Payment is due by Thursday the 19 th of May Year 5 s 1 st group 16 th -20 th of May 2 nd group 23 rd -27 th of May Teachers and students We will be holding a basketball tournament at the 5-8 basketball court on the 3rdof May this is an opportunity to play, just have a crack you re not being judged. The idea is to raise awareness for the Yarrawonga basketball association. In the future we are hoping to build a basketball stadium for Yarrawonga with great facilities there will be a prizes up for grabs. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 31 August Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or experience 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. If you would like your child s name to appear on the Honour Roll, please sign the attached form and return it to your school.
