1 Chatham Primary School Newsletter Issue 11-26th April 2018 Be Safe Be Fair Be Kind Address: Weybridge Street, Surrey Hills 3127 Telephone: (03) Website: PRINCIPAL S MESSAGE ANZAC Day Assembly Congratulations to our Year 6 Leaders who ran the ANZAC Assembly on Tuesday afternoon. It was a lovely assembly and I received many compliments from family members who attended. I personally enjoyed hearing the stories about the soldiers from Surrey Hills who once lived in the neighbouring streets of our school. It was lovely to observe the respect our students demonstrated during this assembly to remember those that made a tremendous sacrifice for us in wars and conflicts around the world. This is a very important way for our students to remember the people that have contributed to the culture that we value today, and the effort and sacrifice that is involved. Our School and Vice Captains, Teagan, Jamison, Eliza and Levi, also represented Chatham at the Surrey Hills Dawn Service at Surrey Gardens yesterday. Please read Miss Kirwan s article to hear more about the dawn service. Working with Children Register Our office team are continuously updating our school s register of those whom have a current Working with Children card. If you have updated your card recently or have a new card, please bring it in to the office so Sue or Trent may photocopy your card and add your details to our register. Please remember, all volunteers working in schools are required to hold a current Working with Children card. Goodbye to Sue Doherty After fifteen years at Chatham, working firstly as an integration aide, then in the school s office, Sue has decided it s time to move to a new school. It was with very mixed feelings that Sue successfully applied for a school office position at a local school. Whilst we are negotiating Sue s start date, there will be some transition time where Sue may work across the two schools to enable her to spend some time with our new office person. Sue has been the face of our office for the past six years and whilst we are sorry to see her leave, we are excited to celebrate with Sue the new opportunities ahead for her. This office position has been advertised and it will take some weeks before the successful candidate begins at Chatham. In the meantime, we will have some relief staff working in our office. Pupil Free Day in Term 2 Friday 8 th June is a Pupil Free Day. There is no school for students on this date. Please ensure you mark this date on your calendar. On this day, our teaching teams will continue their work with our FISO (Framework for Improving Student Outcomes) schools: Canterbury and Auburn Primary Schools. Interschool Sport Year 6 Winter Interschool Sport begins tomorrow. This term sees Football, Softball, Soccer and Netball teams competing against our local schools. Tomorrow, Chatham plays against Balwyn Primary School. Whole School Photo Next Thursday (May 3 rd ) Year 6 Leadership photos will be taken as well as our whole school photo. 2 ANZAC Day Dawn Service Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the Surrey Hills Progress Association ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Surrey Gardens. I was very proud to hear our School Captains, Teagan and Jamison, present biographical readings about local soldiers who served our country during World War I, and to see our Vice Captains, Eliza and Levi, lay wreaths on behalf of our school. Mrs Doherty and Miss Matheson did a fantastic job putting these beautiful wreaths together. The Chatham captains have been invited to participate in this service since its inception in 2015 and were once again complimented by the event organisers for both the interest they showed and their respectful behaviour, in addition to their high level public speaking skills. Congratulations to our School and Vice Captains. Georgie Kirwan Assistant Principal CANTEEN UPDATE Due to lack of volunteers at this point in time, the canteen will not open on Monday the 30th of April as previously advised. The canteen opening was subject to volunteers signing up. So, until all spots are filled we cannot open the canteen. We have put a hard copy roster at the door of the canteen (where it used to be) in the hope that we can find people who are will to do regular shifts. If you have used sign-up to volunteer or prefer this method, that's ok - we will update the hard copy with your information as well until all the spots are filled, so you can keep track of how the roster is looking. We are still committed to opening the canteen and everything else is ready to go, but we need the volunteers. Monday 30th will be a sushi day and you can place your orders via QkR. 11 Cross Country Running Training with Marcus from M Power Personal Fitness These sessions are designed to help prepare students for the School Cross Country events, to improve their running ability and fitness levels.
