1 Please note: After school clubs begin at 2:45 pm. Before school clubs begin at 7:30 pm. Thursday am clubs begin at 8:05 am. Clubs may be cancelled due to low enrollment. Activities and Clubs Art Club: Students in grades 9-11 with an interest in painting, drawing, and other media, are welcome to join the art club. The club will allow for individually motivated students to work on self-directed projects, guidance developing an art portfolio, and sharing of information on topics of interest, such as digital photography. Open to: grades 9-11, and to art students finishing projects: Enrollment will be capped at 25. Meeting time: Thursday club period Location: Art Room Advisor: Mrs. Rufo Arabic Club: Conversational introduction to Arabic open to all students in Grades 7-12 who are interested in learning more about the Arabic language and experiencing the cultures of Arabic-speaking countries. No prior experience Meeting time: one Thursday a month, during Thursday club period. Location: Room 014 Advisor: Dr. Radwan Chamber Music: The Ursuline Chamber Music Ensemble is made up of intermediate and advanced musicians in grades 7 through 12. The ensemble practices in the evening and performs at the Christmas Gathering, the Spring Festival of the Arts and at other special events. (intermediate and advanced musicians) Meeting time: Wednesday night from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm first meeting Sept. 9. Possible Morning meeting TBD Location: 005 Faculty Advisor: Mr. Grohman Choral Group: This group is a very important part of the monthly religious services and performs at numerous events throughout the year. Meeting time: Fridays during D block Location: 005 Faculty Advisor: Mrs. Glancy Coloring Club: If you d like to quiet your mind and stimulate your senses, join the coloring club. All you need is your imagination or a coloring book we ll provide the space and the friendly company. Open to: Grades

2 Meeting time: Thursday am club period Location: room 102 Faculty Advisor: Mrs. Glancy Creative Writing: The Creative Writing Club seeks writers of all genres and levels of experience to explore and develop their voices. An emphasis will be placed on the act of writing, interspersed with time to workshop existing pieces every month. Meeting time: Thursday am club period. Location: 006 Faculty Advisor: Ms. Kinn Club Formerly Known as Diversity Club: New description on the way! Check us out at the Club Fair! Meeting time: Second and Fourth Thursday of the Month, before school. Location: 012 Faculty Advisor: Sra. Levin Drama Club: The members of the Drama Club love to act, to create, to sing, to dance and to have fun. They present three performances a year. Meeting time: after school, various days as required Location: Art Room French Club (grades 10-12) and Junior French Club (grades 7-9): The French Club is an opportunity to explore the cultural aspects of France. Through French music, movies, websites, magazines, traditions, celebrations and food, the club reinforces the learning of French language and appreciation of France s unique culture. Location: 014 Faculty Advisor: Dr. Radwan Glee Club: The Glee Club meets throughout the year in preparation for two performances: the Christmas festival of Lessons and Carols and the Spring Festival of the Arts. Any student who enjoys singing is encouraged to join. Meeting time: Thursday Club Period Location: gym Faculty Advisor: Mrs. Glancy Guitar Club meets weekly in the morning and welcomes acoustic guitar players of every level to jam, trade chord sequences and fingerings, and get their groove on. 3 Faculty Advisor: Dr. Muldoon Junior Robotics Club (FLL): FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a robotic competition for middle school age students. The FLL theme is different each year: the primary objectives of each year s challenge include building and programming a Lego NXT-based robot and investigating a research topic relevant to the challenge. These activities culminate in a regional competition in which teams robots compete and team members present their research. This club will be run by upperclass students who are in UA s FIRST Tech Challenge robotics club. Open to: grades 7 and 8 Meeting time: Thursday Club Period Location: 207 Faculty Advisor: Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Mayo Knitting Club: If you join this club you will never drop another stitch. Either learn to knit or share your skills with newbies. Drop in occasionally or come every week. The knitting club is open to all! Open to: grads 7-12 Meeting time: Thursday Club Period Location: Faculty Advisor: Mrs. Mitchell Liturgical Dance: The Liturgical/Lyrical Dance group is composed of students some ballet training and/or who are currently studying ballet. In addition to sharing their talents at Mass in liturgical dance, these young women perform lyrical dance at the Christmas Gathering and Spring Festival of the Arts. (some prior dance experience is required) Meeting time: Tuesdays after school Location: Bear Cave Faculty Advisor: Ms. Busch Lowder News: Lowder News is open to students interested in journalism, broadcasting, editing or video production. The goal of Lowder News is to create interesting, informative content that will be posted to Youtube on Ursuline s Lowder News page. Newscasts will be posted every two weeks. (limited to 20) Meeting time: Mondays during D period Location: 013 Faculty Advisor: Mrs. Polles Math Club: Math Club is welcoming both to students who are fascinated by the subject of math, as well as students who wish to further develop their math skills. During meetings, we practice a variety of math-related subjects, including the ACT and SAT problems, as well as problems geared for competition. 4 Math League: This group is open to any student enrolled in Algebra I through AP Calculus. Members compete in 6 contests over the academic year, in which questions are posed in non-traditional ways based on the math curriculum. Open to: students in algebra I or above Meeting time: as announced, Tuesdays after school Location: 025 Faculty Advisor: Mrs. Leonard Model UN: The Model UN is an academic simulation of real-world debates facing the UN today. Students practice researching, writing, public speaking and problem solving in order to play the role of an UN delegate at competitive conferences around New England. Model UN requires a high level of interest in international affairs and willingness to research vital world issues. Meeting time: Mondays during D period Location: 111 Faculty Advisor: Mr. Ward Newspaper: The Blazer, the Ursuline student newspaper, is published 3-4 times a year. Girls in grades 9 through 12 may join as a formal activity, but students from all grades are encouraged to contribute articles, photos and ideas. Meeting time: Wednesdays during D period Location: 015 Faculty Advisor: Ms. Mayo Peer Ministry (includes Faith Formation): Peer Ministry is a working and committed ministry for God and others. This two-level ministry involves a deepening of one s faith life, allowing the student to become a spiritual leader in the school community. Members are expected to participate actively and responsibly in the work of evangelization and to make intelligent, moral and creative contributions to the school, to the Church and to the world. This ministry requires a very serious commitment of time, work, prayer and creativity. Open to: grade 12, by application Meeting time: TBD A greater time commitment is required of seniors as the year progresses. Location: Room 002 Faculty Advisor: Ms. Tracy-Robidoux Pop Culture Club: From Dr.Who and Sherlock, to anime and Avengers, the Pop Culture club is a chance to show, share, and discuss all the things that you are a fan of. Meeting time: Thursday afternoons Location: Art Room Robotics: The robotics club will introduce students to the design and construction of robots. Students will learn to build and program Lego Mindstorm robots which will be used to compete in local competitions. Students will be introduced to engineering concepts related to robot design and learn about careers in engineering. This club will be led by engineers from Draper Laboratory in Cambridge. 4

5 Meeting time: Thursdays am club period, and frequent Saturday meetings Location: Robotics Room Advisor: Dr. Ricard Spanish Club: Spanish Club is open to all students in Grades 7-12 who are interested in learning more about the Spanish language and experiencing Spanish cultures. The club will meet monthly. Activities include the celebration of major holidays (decorating sugar skulls for Dia de los Muertos, breaking piñatas for Navidad), Zumba, dance lessons and dinner at a Spanish or Mexican restaurant. Meeting time: First Tuesday of the month, before school Location: 012 Faculty Advisor:. Sra.Levin, Mrs. Benjamin Speech Team: The speech team is an eclectic, talented and enthusiastic group of young women who practice weekly and compete in many regional events. Experienced students on the team act as coaches for the newer students. Competitions are usually held on weekends. Meeting time: Thursdays during D period Location: 008. Student Ambassadors: See Mrs. Curlett for information. Stagecraft: In Stagecraft club students will get hands on experience mask making, special effects make-up, puppetry, building, painting and other theater related projects. Meeting time: Thursday am club period Location: Student Council: This elective body is comprised of representatives from each grade level and the president and vice-president of the student body. In weekly meetings, members discuss issues and concerns with regard to student life. In addition, Student Council sponsors such activities as the Winter Dance, Spirit Week, Catholic Schools Week and the Making Strides walk., by election Meeting time: Wednesdays before school (meetings begin at 7:30) Location: 013 Faculty Advisor: Dr. Muldoon Students Offer Service: SOS is an activity which focuses on offering service in various capacities to those in need of assistance both inside and outside of the Ursuline community. SOS will consist of a maximum of 50 students who will meet on a weekly basis. Throughout the year, students may be called on to offer service for Mission Day, Advent and Lenten prayer activities, the Ursuline school community, including advancement and admissions offices, and to various outside organizations, including the Belle of the Ball project and the Dedham Food Pantry. 5

6 (enrollment will be capped at 50) Meeting time: Thursday am club period Locations: 106 Faculty Advisor: Mrs. Lytle and Mrs. Morency Yearbook: The yearbook staff will be responsible for the layout and design of the Olim. Duties will include determining content, selecting photographs and designing each page and the cover. Each staff member will be assigned certain events or areas of school life as the focus of her pages. Some responsibilities may carry over into the early summer for events that occur late in the school year.
