This week we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton (January 4). St. Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was the first American-born saint in She was raised in New York, married, and had five children. Her husband died at an early age and left her a widow. At the age of 30, she joined the Catholic Church. Because of this, she lost the support of her friends and family and moved her children to Baltimore so they could be near the seat of the Catholic diocese. This was the only one in the United States at that time. In 1908, she opened a school for girls and in 1809 she formed a religious order known as the Sisters of Charity in Emmitsburg, Maryland. She and the rest of the Sisters of Charity helped to begin and run the first Catholic schools for boys and girls in America. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton died in 1821 at the age of 46. After her death, the Sisters of Charity spread throughout many communities around the United States establishing many orphanages and schools. The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati was established in 1846 and they established the first Catholic schools in this area, with the assistance of the Holy Angels Parish in Sidney. The first graduating class was in 1889, with three female graduates. The Piqua Parishes, St. Mary and St. Boniface followed with their first four year graduates in 1918 and 1927, respectively. Lehman Catholic is still supported by the Sisters of Charity and we have named our chapel in honor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. We have also added a statue and a relic of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton to our Chapel. We are blessed to have Sister Ginny, a Sister of Charity, teaching Science at Lehman Catholic!

Mr. Tim Langenderfer receives 2017 Stanley Harrison Family Distinguished Teacher Award Mr. Tim Langenderfer was selected by his peers to receive the 2017 Stanley Harrison Family Distinguished Teaching Award. Langenderfer is a graduate of Ohio University and received his Bachelor s Degree in Fine Arts with a major in Studio Arts (Drawing, Painting and Graphic Design) with a minor in Art History. He began his teaching career 21 years ago at the University of Dayton where he taught Illustration, Drawing, and Anatomy Drawing for Pre-med majors. This is Langenderfer's third year at Lehman Catholic High School where he teaches Art Fundamentals, Drawing & Painting, Ceramics, and Studio Art. This award is named after Stanley Harrison, founder of Barclay s Clothiers in downtown Piqua. The Stanley Harrison Distinguished Teaching Award was established by Sammye Harrison following the death of her husband to honor his memory and his deep respect for the work our teachers do to produce students who contribute to society. The family considered a number of ways to accomplish that goal including student scholarship programs but eventually determined that honoring those who do the hard work at the school the teachers, was the best way to honor his memory. The next time you shop at Barclay s, please thank Mrs. Harrison and/or her son Bert for their generosity to Lehman Catholic. Mr. Langenderfer is the eleventh teacher to receive the Stanley Harrison Teacher Award. He joins Tony Wagner (2016), Leah Bertke (2015), Tracy Hall (2014), Joe Schmiesing (2013), Jack Albers (2012), Pam Wendel (2011), Melissa Safreed (2010), Barb Saluke (2009), George Grampp (2008), and Sister Ginny Scherer (2007).

3 Lehman Jean Days Students are invited to wear blue jeans to help raise money for organizations and individuals in need. Guidelines are in the student handbook on page 22. The following is a list of jean days and the organizations and individuals benefitting form the funds raised. Cost is $3 per day. January 11 Women's Center in SIdney February 1 Smiles of Hope Angel House March 8 Lenten Project April 19 St. Jude Children's Hospital May 3 Miami County Dental in Troy State-required hearing tests to be conducted at LCHS The State of Ohio requires all junior and freshmen students to participate in hearing tests. Hearing tests will be conducted by the Shelby County Health Department at Lehman Catholic High School on Tuesday, Jan. 16. January is School Board Recognition Month Lehman Catholic students, staff and teachers benefit every day from the dedication and commitment to education of our school board members. They all make personal sacrifices and spend countless hours tending to board business. It is often a thankless job. Thank you for all you do! Lehman Pro-Lifeguards plan to participate in the Annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., on Friday, Jan. 19. Participants march in respect for life and in protest of the Supreme Court Decision in Roe vs. Wade. The trip is designed as a pilgrimage, not a sightseeing tour. The bus carrying Lehman Catholic High School students will depart the evening of Thursday, Jan. 18 from LCHS. The group will travel through the night to the Nation s Capital, participate in a youth rally, attend Mass at the Armory and march from the Smithsonian Mall to the US Supreme Court. The bus will return home early (predawn) on Saturday, Jan. 20. We have 62 students signed-up for the March for Life trip! We need two more adult chaperones to travel with us. If you are interested in making the trip, there is NO COST to you! Please contact Ms. Bertke as soon as possible at l.bertke@lehmancatholic.com. We are sad to announce that Mrs. Ashley Minnich has resigned from Lehman Catholic High School, over the Christmas break, for family reasons. To fill her position, we have hired former Lehman teacher and guidance counselor, Barb Saluke, to teach the Spanish classes. Mrs. Saluke holds a Professional High School Teaching License in the areas of English and Spanish, along with her Guidance Counselor s License. She will be with us for the second semester, beginning January 16. Until then, we will have a substitute teacher following the lesson plans provided by Mrs. Minnich. Please welcome Mrs. Saluke back to the Lehman Community and please keep Mrs. Minnich and her family in your prayers!

Parent-Teacher grade card conferences will be help Wednesday, Jan. 24 from 5 to 8 p.m. Summer Mission Trip in Kentucky in July The Summer Mission Trip is July We will be volunteering with the Christian Appalachian Project in Floyd County of eastern Kentucky. The cost of this year's trip is $450 per student. A $100 down payment is required to reserve one of the 18 remaining spaces. We are working to organize several fundraising opportunities for this trip, and we also have financial need scholarships available. Please do not let the cost stand in the way of your child participating! See the attached trip itinerary for more details. Students and parents who are interested in this trip should contact Ms. Bertke to pick up a registration form. Trip to Europe planned for June 2019 You're invited to join us for a 12-day trip to Europe, June 17-28, Destinations include Prague, Vienna, Ljubljana, Venice, and Rome! Eighth grade students who will be part of the Lehman Class of 2022 are encouraged to join us on this trip! More details about the trip can be found in the attachment. 5 PINK OUT GAME on January 20 On Saturday, Jan. 20, Lehman Catholic cheerleaders will host a PINK OUT GAME in support of breast cancer awareness at the Lehman Catholic High School vs. Sidney High School boys basketball game. In advance of this very special event, both schools will be working together to raise awareness of breast cancer by selling the We Fight Together t-shirt. The shirt can be purchased by using the attached form or online at ernstsports.com. All proceeds from the t-shirt sales benefit the Francis Women's Center at Wilson Health.

7 Annual Fund Campaign July 1, June 30, 2018 This year our goal is to raise $375,000 for the Annual Fund. $325,000 will benefit the tuition assistance program to assist more than 40 percent of our students. The remaining $50,000 will close the gap for all students attending Lehman Catholic. To date, donors have contributed more than $189,000. We are asking you to help us reach our goal with a monetary gift and hope that you will prayerfully consider giving to the Annual Fund to meet the ever-growing needs of providing a Catholic education to the students at Lehman Catholic. 8 Annual Open House and Science Fair planned for February 7 Lehman Catholic High School's Open House is Wednesday, Feb. 7 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Prospective students and their families are invited to tour the building, meet faculty and coaches, and learn more about Lehman's extra-curricular and co-curricular programs. The Open House concludes at 8:30 p.m. with students and parents having the opportunity to view Lehman student s Science Fair projects.
