1 GHS News Edition 2: 18 th September 2017 It has been another busy week at Greenbank as you can see in the newsletter. I am delighted that over 100 pupils have signed up to be Open Evening guides. The girls will need to be in school from 5.30pm in full school uniform including blazer badges as parents often arrive early. New guides are welcome and can sign up on Monday via a letter available at reception. The evening is an excellent opportunity to open our doors to the community and celebrate life at Greenbank. It was fantastic to see after school clubs start last week with high numbers attending. The timetable for PE and Music clubs was in my last newsletter. Dance, Drama and Let s Get Cooking Club now have over 100 pupils signed up! Please ask your daughter to ensure she says thank you to the member of staff delivering the club after school. During assemblies last week Mrs Russell outlined our Behaviour for Learning Policy which is summarised in the Student Planner. Our aim is to ensure girls are fully aware of the routines in school, rewards which apply to the vast majority and sanctions which apply to very few. Wandering around school last week I was impressed with the impeccable behaviour and learning taking place in all areas. As you will see below there are major roadworks starting on Lord Street which may disrupt your daughter s travel to and from school. If you bring your daughter to school by car, please drop her off on Waterloo Road and not Hastings Road so they can park and stride. We ask parents not to drive into the school grounds or attempt a three point turn before the barriers, as this is potentially very dangerous for our pupils and staff alike. Raikes Headteacher Cake sale for Papyrus An amazing was raised in 15 minutes on Friday 15 th September for the charity Papyrus (Prevention of Young Suicide). The Year 7 and 10 girls that helped out were fantastic and have all been awarded reward points. TRANSPORT - We have received the following information from Merseytravel Road works on Lord Street are starting on Monday and will continue for approximately six weeks. Phase 1 starts on Monday for two weeks and Phase 2 will only affect the 748 service and this phase starts on 2nd October. The following bus routes will have diversions in place.

2 Service 716 (Phase 1) From Greenbank High School as normal to Lord Street West/Duke Street, then right Duke Street, left Shakespeare Street, into St James Street, right Scarisbrick New Road, then resume normal route to Blowick. Omits Lord Street and Eastbank Street. Service 748 (Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3) From Greenbank High School as normal to Lord Street/Duke Street, left Duke Street, right Victoria Way, right Esplanade, onto the Promenade, right Leicester Street, left Albert Road, then resume normal route to Crossens the Plough. Omits Lord Street. The phases are as follows; 1. Mon 18th to Fri 29th September Duke Street to Eastbank Street 2. Mon 2nd to Fri 6th Oct Eastbank Street to Neville Street 3. Mon 9th To Fri 22nd Sept Nevill Street to Manchester Road (same as Phase 2) 4. Mon 25th to Fri 29th Oct junctions of Eastbank and Nevill Street night time closures Lord Street will re-open each Friday evening until first bus service on Monday mornings throughout the period of temporary closures. Please make sure your daughter is aware of the available information. As soon as we have any more details we shall pass them on to you. As a parent please ensure your daughter is well prepared for travel to and from school with a Plan B if possible. Careers EVENT FOR BUDDING MEDICAL STUDENTS Range High School are hosting an evening for students (and their families), interested in applying to study medicine at university. They have a Cambridge undergraduate coming into school on Wednesday 27th September between 6 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. The event will focus on the basics of choosing medicine, the application process, writing personal statements, entrance exams and interviews, with a small part of the evening looking at applying for medicine at Cambridge specifically. The event which will be held in the Sixth Form Block is open to interested students and their families. If your daughter is interested in attending they would be more than welcome to do so. All years are welcome. Gymnastics success Many congratulations to Year 11 pupil Jaz Greenwood, who is managing to combine competing at the highest level in gymnastics and her school studies. Last weekend she competed in the British Junior FIG Compulsory Competition held at Wigan Sports Centre. Once again she did herself proud, she has worked so hard over the summer training, revising, travelling to Chicago on her own to gain some expert coaching from the USA. Lunchtimes Greenbank has a cash system for the Canteen and lunches cannot be purchased through Parentpay. Please can parents make sure their daughters have a packed lunch or money to buy food from the Canteen. The up to date menus are on our website. Year 7 Disco The Year 7 Disco this year will be on Wednesday 18 th October at Birkdale High School. Tickets will be on sale through the Finance Office shortly. Letters will go into Year 7 registers. 4 Languages European Day of Languages is celebrated each year at Greenbank with a series of menus to reflect different foods from around the world. There will still be sandwiches and the cold food selection on offer in the Canteen. Thank you to the Canteen and Language staff for making this happen. 5 Music The Music Department have developed the COTA Council are looking for leaders in creative subjects to become Champions of the Arts. The aim is to: Join in discussions about the existing arts activities and development of new opportunities. Attend planning meetings to share ideas about creative ways to support progress in various subject areas. Spread the importance of the arts for ALL students and deliver training to other schools and subjects areas to place an importance on creative problem solving. Help plan a celebration event for the arts (Arts Prom). Give the arts a young voice at Greenbank High School. A champion from each creative subject in Year 9 and Year 10 will be appointed. As a council member pupils will wear badges and act role models representing the arts around school and in the community. A New Girls Easy Listening Service (ANGELS) 26 Year 10 pupils completed Peer Mentor training with Mrs Stansfield on Thursday 14th September. All the girls successfully completed the training and will be supporting our year 7 pupils. The ANGELS have been helping new Year 7 pupils find their way around school and helping them settle in.
