Next week students who have achieved a bronze certificate for being a Safe Caring Learner will participate in their reward activity which this term is swimming for Year 1 6 and a movie for Prep students. Our Prep to Year 2 students are also busy getting their Easter Bonnets prepared for the parade next Thursday morning at 9.00 am. We wish you all a very safe and enjoyable break over the Easter vacation period. The school s office will reopen for Term 2 when school resumes on Tuesday 17 April. 5R AND 5T VISIT TO LONE PINE On Tuesday students in 5T and 5R visited Lone Pine as part of the science unit that they are currently studying. Students were investigating how animals, particularly native animals have adapted to suit various environments. CONGRATUALTIONS Congratulations to Lucy T on her selection in the Mt Gravatt district 12 yrs girls netball team. She will now compete at the Met East selection carnival in May. We wish her luck for further representative honours. The following process is used to organise our excursions. The teacher/s of the class or year level identify an excursion which aligns with a unit of work that they are doing and which will enhance and enrich students are learning. The request is submitted for approval by the Head of Teaching and Learning and endorsed by the Principal. RAISING RESILIENT CHILDREN SEMINAR The Triple P Seminar, Raising Resilient Children helps parents to teach children how to: recognise, understand and accept feelings, express feelings in appropriate ways, develop a positive outlook, and learn to deal with negative feelings and cope with stressful life events. The seminar will be run at the school by trained presenter, Karen Healy on Thursday 29 May 6:30-8pm. We have organised this presentation before and parents have found it extremely useful. Bookings will be open on Friday 20 April through SOBS. NAPLAN From the Deputy Principal, Mr James Howden The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7and 9. Students in these year levels will participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education programs are working and what areas need to be improved. NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students have already been learning through the school curriculum. This week, students in Prep to year 3 learned what to do if they experience bullying and how to respond. The strategies they focussed on were: to ignore, talk to say stop and walk away, and tell someone. The students planned out who their Trusted 5 people are to talk to if they have a problem. Year 4 6 students focussed on Cyber bullying, what it is and how to respond if it happens to them. They learned about reporting it someone in their Trusted 5, keeping a record by saving or taking screen shots, bully blocking by removing friends, changing security settings, and reporting bullying to - site administrators, the school and/or police.

3 P&C meets first Monday of every month 7:00pm Staff Room Page 3 CROSS COUNTRY TRAINING BEFORE SCHOOL Ms Lang is offering cross country training to students before school on a Thursday and Friday morning at 8:15 am each week until week 2 next term, 27 April. The training is for students who are born in 2008, 2007, and 2006 and are wanting to be considered for district cross country selection. A school team to compete at the district cross country carnival on Wednesday May 2 will be selected from students who attend these training sessions. Students born 2008 will be required to run a 2km event and those born 2007 and 2006 a 3km event. Runners ideally need to also be doing some extra preparation of their own and running with family where possible. A recommended three sessions per week building up to running for a constant minutes would be good preparation. Students can attend a Thursday or Friday session or both. Permission forms are available at the office. Our Inter-house Cross Country held at school is scheduled for Friday the 3rd of August in term 3. FREE DRESS DAY The student council has planned a Free Dress Day on Thursday in week 10. Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation if they wear free dress. Please ensure that your child wears closed in shoes, sun-safe clothing, and branding or pictures on clothing that is appropriate for primary school. Students must wear their school hat or a similar broad brimmed hat. Tank tops, singlets, sleeveless dresses, midriff shirts, thongs and caps are not appropriate. The money raised from this event will go towards sponsoring the Student Council s World Vision child. PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS Parent teacher interviews will occur next week in the PAC from 3:20 to 6:00 pm on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. All interviews will run for 10 min. A bell will sound after 9 minutes and again at 10 min to change over. If you require more time, please speak with your child s class teacher to arrange an alternate appointment time. There will be chairs for parents to wait outside the hall and parents will be invited in after the bell sounds at the change over time. Entry and exit to the interviews will be via the side of the hall overlooking the oval. There will also be interviews in term three and term four. HEAD LICE ALERT Reminders Head lice have been detected in the school. The parents of all students are being notified via this newsletter. It is extremely important for you to check your child s head for head lice TODAY. If you do find head lice, commence treatment immediately and be sure to complete the process of treatment. This will help prevent head lice from spreading. Remember to keep checking your family member s heads every 2 days until there are no head lice found for 10 consecutive days. STUDENT ABSENCE LINE A reminder to parents and carers to please ensure you use the dedicated School Absence Line, to report your child s absence. Parents are asked not to ring the school office to report absences but to use the school absence line. We will be removing sushi and mac -n-cheese (hasn t been very popular). We will be adding homemade butter chicken, BLT with aioli on turkish bread roll, chicken and cheese on turkish bread roll and a meat free nachos. I will endeavour to have the new menu done before the end of this Term. If you would like the new menu to be ed to you, please contact me. Volunteering in the Tuckshop is a great way to meet people and the children love seeing their parents or grandparents at school. Homebake donations are always appreciated too! Lunch and tea or coffee is provided for volunteers. Please contact me if you are in a position to help out. My contact details are below and we also have an online roster at zzrbrrnudbdknjza2. Any amount of time you can spare would be greatly appreciated.
