1 Term 4, Week 6, 8th November, 2016 Principal s Message 2017 PREP ENROLMENTS NOW WELCOME Dear Parents/Caregivers, NOVEMBER 8 Prep Orientation 9 School Swimming 11 Remembrance Day 16 School Swimming 21 Nano Nagle F/Day 23 School Swimming PREP ORIENTATION Today the children for Prep next year spent the morning in our Prep environment. Our orientation was once again full of energy, smiles, excitement, no tears but instead lots of busy little people exploring their new school. It was very pleasing to hear about the co-operative and caring manner in which the students from all year levels have welcomed our new students. I would like to thank the Prep Staff, Miss Olivia Holmes and School Officer Mrs Janet Paech for all their hard work and commitment preparing for the orientation days. Also thanks to Mr Justin McCarthy and Miss Helene Werda, who assisted in obtaining information to enhance effective planning for these students. If you are aware of anyone looking to enrol in Prep, please ask them to contact the Office, as there is still room available to join us for next year. NANO NAGLE FEAST DAY AND AWARDS 24 Christmas Carols 29 Thanksgiving Mass DECEMBER 1 End of Yr Mass 2 End of Year 12PM On Monday 21st November, we will celebrate Nano Nagle Feast Day and Awards for These awards recognize children from each class who demonstrate those qualities associated with Nano Nagle ( ), foundress of the Presentation Sisters. These qualities include reverence for God and respect for others, generosity and helpfulness towards staff and their classmates and a genuine effort to do their best in all aspects of the school. It is also an opportunity to acknowledge and thank the Presentation Sisters for their generosity in our school, the parish, and the wider community during the course of many years in Murgon. Sister Carmel and Sister Marilyn will be returning to share this celebration with us at St. Joseph s. Their presence will help remind us all of the spirit of Nano Nagle a spirit of cheerful service to others and of an unwavering trust in God s loving presence at all times. YEAR 6 THANKSGIVING (COMPLETION OF PRIMARY SCHOOL) At 6pm on Tuesday 29th November, we will gather together for Thanksgiving Liturgy where we will acknowledge and thank our current Year 6 leaders for their time at St. Joseph s before they move on and continue their journey into high school next year. This ceremony will take place in St Joseph s Church. The evening will conclude with dinner for the children, families and staff in the hall. We are looking forward to this very special occasion here at St. Joseph s.

2 Principal s message continued CAROLS NIGHT Our Carols Night will be held on Thursday November 24th at 6pm. We invite you all to join us as we celebrate the spirit of Christmas at this wonderful St Joseph s community event. The event will be held on the school oval, so you are welcome to BYO chairs, picnic rugs and, of course, singing voices to join in the carol singing under starlight. Give mum a night off cooking! The P & F will be running a BBQ on the night. Friday 2 December is the last day of the school year for 2016 and school will conclude for the children at 12 noon. Have a great fortnight everyone, Greg Cran Principal Castra Visits Our students enjoying interacting with their Castra Buddies News from our Student Leaders The nurture leadership group is currently running a healthy eating lunch box competition. The teachers will be handing out tokens for a healthy lunch box each break time. We suggest that every child should pack a piece of fruit in their lunch box.

3 APRE News I thought it was appropriate to begin with this quote, considering the news that Mr Cran and Fr Michael are continuing their life journey in different places. While it is disappointing, the positive side is that we are thankful for the way they have blessed our lives. I am grateful to have had the pleasure of learning and growing under their guidance and I wish them every happiness in their new positions. Remembrance Day We will be celebrating Remembrance Day on the 11 th November with a Mass in the Church at 9:30. Why do we celebrate on this day? At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven the German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months. In November the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted allied terms that amounted to unconditional surrender. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years. The children will have a short remembrance and a minute s silence at 11am. You are welcome to joins us for these special remembrance events.

4 APRE News continued Celebrations this Term 11th Nov-Remembrance Mass Year 4 & 2 14th Nov- Assembly Year 2 21st Nov-Nano Nagle Feast Day/ Assembly Year 3 & 1 28th Nov-Assembly 29th Nov-Thanksgiving Liturgy 1st Dec-End of year Mass Faith Committee Faith Committee are organising a Christmas Appeal. They are asking that each child bring in a non-perishable item to be placed in the boxes in the office. This will then be given to St Vincent s to help those who struggle at Christmas time. Validation Last week, our school proudly accepted validation for Religious Education. This is an ongoing process, designed to ensure Archdiocesan schools have a high quality education program documented, which articulates a Catholic world view of learning and teaching. This has been a process of information and evidence gathering over the last two years and required commitment and dedication from all staff. We then presented this to a panel consisting of other schools and a Religious Education Officer and they were amazed at the tremendous work the staff at St Joseph do and how strong the Religious Life of the school is. A huge thanks to all concerned and a special thanks to Miss Marshall and Br Tim for assisting me in with this process. Reading Even though the end of the year is progressing, we are still ensuring that the children are continuing their learning journey. Teachers are observing student development in preparation for reporting and so it is important that students continue their reading and learning at home. 5 Community News Dear School Principal With only five students left to place with volunteer Australian host families, I would be grateful if you would include the attached item in your school newsletter or next broadcast. For families in your school community, who might be interested in enriching their family with this intercultural experience, this is their last opportunity to apply to host in February WEP Australia, is a registered not-for-profit student exchange organisation. We send Australian high school students overseas to experience life in a new environment and we welcome overseas exchange students to Australia to live with local families and experience Australian culture. Please note that our wonderful host families come from all walks of life and many diverse backgrounds. We have families that live in remote communities in central Queensland, families who surf, swim and dive coastal New South Wales and families with busy, bustling city-lives in Victoria!
