1 PRINCIPAL S PEN NEWSLETTER An Independent Public School 6 March Term 1 Week I hope everyone enjoyed some quality family time over the long weekend. We are now at the half-way point of what has already been a busy term. Don t forget we have Easter coming up. The students will have their Easter break from Friday 30 March (Good Friday) and return to school on Wednesday 4 April. Assembly Thank you and congratulations to Miss McMurray and the students from C5 for their assembly on Friday 23 February. The students entertained us with their telling of the real story of the Three Little Pigs. Well done also to the leaders of our assembly, Jay and Ella, for their excellent skills in public speaking. I am looking forward to our next assembly this Friday, to be presented by the students from B2. Gardener Position Congratulations to the successful applicant for our gardener position, Mr Peter Sillem. Peter has been working at our school as the relief gardener since the end of last year. We are sure he will continue the great work of our former gardener Murray. School Photos Our school photos were taken by Kapture last week. Any parents with queries about photos should contact Kapture directly on We expect ordered photos to be returned to school towards the end of week 8. Film, Feast and Fete Our major P&C fundraiser for the year is fast approaching. Come along and join us for an afternoon and evening of fun and entertainment on Saturday 24 March from 4:30pm. This will be a great opportunity for the whole family to enjoy some time together whilst raising much needed funds for our school. Thank you to the P&C for their ongoing efforts in relation to this and other events in our school. Parent Help It has been wonderful to see so many parents helping out across classes throughout the school. Teachers could not do their jobs as well without the support. Thank you to those of you who have supported our students by volunteering your time. Tee Ball State Representation Congratulations go to the following students who were selected to represent their club at the 2018 Tee Ball State Championships over the weekend: Kobe E, Daniel B, Benjamin H, Mahli Mc and Tyler E. The boys all had success with Kobe s team winning silver and Daniel, Benjamin and Mahli s team winning bronze. Well done boys. Attendance Creaney Primary School takes the attendance of its students very seriously. Over the next few newsletters, we will be including information about attendance. Here is some valuable information for this fortnight. The Research The Telethon Kids Institute has undertaken research on the impact of students absence from school. This, together with the Auditor General s report: Every Day Counts, have made some interesting findings: Attendance is a learned behaviour. A child s attendance career is usually set by Year 1 and irreversible by Year 3. Every absence has an impact on school achievement. For every day of unauthorised absence, Year 3 numeracy results decline by 1.6 NAPLAN points. There is a clear link between non-attendance and mental health. There is a cumulative effect of absence.

2 The cumulative effect of absence If a child misses that equals (days missed per year) that equals (years missed in school career P-12) Which is the same as attending until: 1 day per fortnight 20 nearly 1.5 years part-way through year 11 1 day per week 40 over 2.5 years part-way through year 10 2 days per week 80 over 5 years the end of year 7 3 days per week 120 nearly 8 years the end of year 4 If you would like to discuss your child s attendance, please arrange a meeting with the class teacher. Ms Rachel Monamy Principal CHAPLAIN S CHAT I would like to let you know about some new services being offered in the community. Kingsley Konnect is a group of people meeting each week to enjoy table tennis, indoor bowls, Mah-jong, table games, art, craft, knitting, morning tea and much more and they would love for you to be a part of it! It is on Thursdays 9:30am 12pm at Kingsley Church of Christ (Cnr Barridale Drive and New Cross Road) $4 a week. 3 MUSIC NEWS I am looking for donations of any 20L buckets that we could use as we study Bucket Drumming in the Upper Primary classes. These would of course need to be cleaned. If you have any or know of someone who might, please bring them straight to the Music room. Mrs Barker Music Teacher NIHONGO NEWS Last Friday we had two Ninja Boys visit Creaney PS to run a cultural workshop introducing us to two traditional toys from Japan the kendama and the koma. Students had a great time learning how to play, and then made their own. Today at Japanese, B5 and B6 had 2 special guests come in. their names were Yoshi and Yuho. The first thing they showed us was the Kendama. It is a toy that has a string and on the end it was a ball and you have to swing the ball to try and land on the wooden stick. The first 4 times I missed, but on the 5 th time I got it! The second thing was a Koma which is basically a spinning top. By Caitlyn B5 Next Saturday 10 th March, there is a Japan Festival being held in Forrest Place in the City. This is a free event, with lots of demonstrations and performances. I encourage all families and students to attend and enjoy the festivities you may even spot our Ninja Boys there! Barker Sensei (Mrs Barker) Languages Teacher

Friday the 2 March was Dr. Seuss Day, a day that celebrates the birthday of the children s author Theodor Seuss Geisel, commonly known as Dr. Seuss. In celebration of his life and works the Pre-Primary and Year 1 students of E1, E2 and A4 took part in a day of Cat in the Hat inspired activities. These red and white themed Cat in the Hat activities allowed the students to manipulate materials, engage with their peers, engage all of their senses, and work through their thoughts and feelings; all while learning through play. It was a fabulous day, enjoyed by all children and adults alike. Mrs McCulloch, Mrs Cotterell, Miss Sansalone and Mrs Palmer

6 P&C The Creaney Easter Film, Feast & Fete is only a month away. We look forward to seeing you all there to support the school. The event will raise money for much needed items such as basketball court resurfacing, ipads & school equipment. The Movie will be Night at the Museum and tickets will be on sale from the 5 March at $10 for Adults and $5 for Children (under 18) For the event to be a success, we need the support of parents to volunteer for the following: Fire truck attendant 6-8pm Sausage sizzle chefs & sales 6-8pm shift Crazy hair stall Plant stall 6-8pm Marshalls Raffle- ticket sellers P&C stall 6-8pm Please put your name on the roster on the P&C Board (in front of Mr Dowding s classroom B Block) or contact Janet or Sally RAFFLE PRIZES We still need prizes for the raffle. 7 Have you ever wondered what happens with your $30 P&C contribution? Well, fear not because your annual P&C contribution is hard at work funding: 1 Full day of Chaplaincy services (including mental health, leadership and teamwork coaching); Sunscreen for all students; Year 6 End of Year celebrations; Kindy homework bags; and Kindy reading books. WACSSO membership and Insurance at fundraising events This costs the school almost $9,000 annually and we have only received 54% of the full contributions. Unless we reach 100%, the remaining gap is covered through the funds raised from other fundraising events, which in turns diminishes the amount of money available for school wish list items (like science and IT, audio visual and sports).
