1 LA SALLE COLLEGE, PERTH PLACEMENT PROFILES LIVING IN A LASALLIAN VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY Situated in Middle Swan, approximately 30 minutes from the city of Perth, La Salle College has a rich Lasallian history. Approximately 1450 students attend the College. There are no De La Salle Brothers who work at the school but some regularly visit from other locations in Australia and other countries. The College has a mix of low and high socio-economic family backgrounds and many students with special needs. The school has a strong service aspect to their faith expression. Volunteers would be involved with Indigenous learning aspects of the school and live close by the Boarding Hostel to support these students (mostly from remote WA communities) in their education. There would be many opportunities for involvement in co-curricular activities, sport and youth ministry. It offers Lasallian Volunteers a broad cross-cultural experience, outreach to disadvantaged youth, gaining skills and growing in understanding of mission and community. La Salle College: Assisting in the boarding hostel most afternoons, nights and on weekends Working with Indigenous boarders in the mainstream school environment and at the boarding hostel Weekend work with Indigenous boarding students through movie nights, sport, outdoor activities, excursions Assist Indigenous students with their afternoon and weekend homework and other activities including board games, art Prepare and participate in boarding house liturgies Participate in retreat programs at the direction of the school Assist in literacy and student learning support services Mentoring opportunities with marginalised young people in the school Weekends are largely spent with Indigenous students and days off are usually during the week. A typical day may include preparing students for school, assisting Indigenous students throughout the school day. A short break after school, followed by dinner with the boarders and then assisting until 8.30pm. This would be for 3 weekdays. Preferred qualifications: Driver licence, interest in sports and outdoor education, ability to tutor in basic numeracy and literacy.

2 DE LA SALLE COLLEGE, MANGERE EAST, NZ Situated in South Auckland, De La Salle College is a secondary school of about 1000 boys in a low socio-economic area. Students are very loyal and passionate about their school and their sport, yet require firm guidance and very clear boundary setting. Several Brothers and colleagues work with mainly Polynesian boys. It offers two male Lasallian Volunteers a broad cross-cultural experience, outreach to disadvantaged youth and growing in understanding of mission and community. Lasallians are openly welcomed in the Brothers community. There is easy access by train and bus to New Zealand s biggest city centre. Responsibilities can involve helping with home chores in the community. Weather can be coolish year-round. Lasallian Volunteers will also help with retreats at the other two Lasallian schools in New Plymouth and Rotorua. * This placement is for males only as Lasallian Volunteers live within the Brothers community. De La Salle College: Prepare and participate in class/school-wide liturgies, retreats and leadership formation programs Assist in planning and implementing the Youth Ministry Program Assist in truancy and attendance co-ordination Assist in literacy and student learning support service Assist in the homework centre after school Assist in extra-curricular options and planning, e.g. sports programs Assist with retreats, outdoor education camps and leadership training programs Preferred qualifications: Solid literacy and numeracy skills, driver s licence, interest in sports and outdoor education, retreat experience

3 YOURTOWN, CAMPBELLTOWN, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA yourtown creates brighter futures for young people and their families with their services tackling some of the toughest issues facing children, young people and families in Australia: Homelessness, family violence, mental health and wellbeing, youth unemployment. Together yourtown finds solutions to help young people find their place in the community. Lasallian Volunteers at yourtown work alongside young people to help them achieve their goals. All volunteers are seen to be 'Youth Mentors'. As a volunteer, every time they engage in any activity with young people, volunteers are in a position of influence. Volunteers share wisdom and wit with those who have sometimes not had access to positive role models. Lasallian Volunteers are welcomed in and form part of the Brothers community at Bankstown. There is access by train and bus to Australia s biggest city centre. Responsibilities in community can involve helping with home chores, including gardening, cleaning, cooking and so on. * This placement is for males only as Lasallian Volunteers live within the Brothers community. yourtown: ONE-ON-ONE AND GROUP MENTORING Mentoring brings a young person and an adult volunteer (mentor/role model) together to develop a positive professional working relationship. The goal of the mentoring relationship is to support and encourage the young person to build self confidence, to be a good listener and to grow emotionally and socially. LANGUAGE LITERACY AND NUMERACY TEACHING yourtown volunteers provide an important service within Language, Literacy and Numeracy support. They assist young people in developing their skills and confidence in their ability to learn. ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES Each yourtown site coordinates a diverse range of engagement activities that are designed to support a young person s social interaction, team building and self confidence skills. Some of our current engagement activities include a variety of sports, arts, music and dance workshops. 4 LASALLE TECHNICAL COLLEGE - HOHOLA, PAPUA NEW GUINEA La Salle Technical College - Hohola was established in 1973 to cater for students who wished to continue their education but could not access high schools. Most of its students come from Port Moresby settlement areas or families that are in difficult financial situations. The school is operated by the De La Salle Brothers. An International Brothers community of four Brothers from four countries serve with fifty Lasallian educators educating 700 students. Ever since its inception in 1973 the emphasis of the La Salle Technical College - Hohola has been to give opportunities to young people who had missed out on a place in further secondary school education. Students gain an education and skills to assist them to gain meaningful employment. The skills include both vocational and trade areas; both boys and girls get National Certificate one and two (1 & 2) training, Carpentry & Construction, Metal Fabrication & Welding, Automotive Servicing (Light Vehicles), Office Administration (Business Studies), Electro Technology and Tourism & Hospitality including Commercial Cookery. Every student will be educated to obtain National Technical Certificates, Grade 10 High School certificates and On the Job Training certificates. Lasallian volunteers will have the opportunity to support the enthusiastic and vibrant students of the College in their education.
