1 Issue 14 March 21 st 2017 Headlines Not long now until our Annual Easter Hat Parade (see below for a reminder of the details) but still lots to do in between! This term has certainly sped through and Spring is most definitely in the air which lifts our spirits. Well done to our Year 6 mathematicians who took part in a maths competition at Raleigh on Monday, 13 th March. team consisting of Josh, Isabella, Kieran Bu and Keiran Be (who stood in at the last minute for Robert who was unwell), came a very respectable 3 rd in the competition and of particular note was their great team spirit and the way that they played to each other s strengths whilst working effectively as a team. Thank you also to Mrs Burrows for transporting and chaperoning them. Thank you to all of you who managed to attend the ChildNet presentation last Thursday, the information was well presented and clear with further documentation available to support the talk. I certainly learnt a lot and was especially interested to note the idea of individuals creating a reputational footprint which future employers may use when shortlisting or deciding between candidates for jobs. Try googling your name to see what comes up! It is so easy to rant to our friends on social media when we are upset by events in our lives and have no care for the consequences. This is especially true of matters concerning school. Our policies state quite clearly that we will address incidences of unkind or inflammatory posts and would ask that if you have concerns about anything that happens in school, you seek me out to talk about them. I would like to think that most problems can be resolved in a civilised and friendly manner for the good of everyone! Because of the nature of social media, I nearly always find out about posts concerning the school and whilst it is lovely to read the many positive ones, negative remarks, especially if mentioning any staff member by name, or the school in general, will not be tolerated. On to happier subjects, there continue to be many sporting tournaments, friendly games and competitions that we enter. This is so good for the self-esteem of individual children and for their fitness and well-being. A list of our most recent achievements is in the content of the newsletter below. We are very grateful for all those who support us by transporting to events and cheering us on and also to Mrs James, Mrs Scrase and Mrs Townshend for doing the organising. We also have a number of children who are successfully achieving great things in the field of music. What a talented bunch we have! Gail Hard has PRIDE! We use the letters of the word PRIDE to share the moral purpose and values of the school with all children. y know what each letter stands for and how we can demonstrate these values. Assemblies often make reference to one or more elements of this word and their links to the school s caring rules opposite. P Positive R Respect I Independence D Difference E Excellence Each month we also focus on a specific learning skill and draw attention to its use in lessons. March s learning skill is: Exploration learning by trying out and giving things a go.

(Please note Friday 21 st July is an INSET day) Half term is Monday 29 th May to Friday 2 nd June Cultural Diversity Day We are looking forward to our new Cultural Diversity Day on Wednesday this week. All children in the school are special to us and all are unique. We like to think we know a lot about each of them, but equally recognise that there is much about their backgrounds that we do not know. Wednesday, 22 nd March is an opportunity for each child to show an element of their background or heritage. We welcome national colours, costume or stereotypical views and will be encouraging pupils to talk about their backgrounds, especially those of different cultures and those whose origin is not British. We are looking forward to a colourful and informative day. If any parent would like to talk about their background, please let your child s classteacher know. Friends Quiz Night Many thanks to Casey Swayze and her team for an enjoyable and competitive Quiz Night on Friday. Thank you to everyone who attended, there was a terrific turnout. A grand total of was raised towards Fund. Bag2 Collection last Bag2 collection raised to go towards the polytunnel, together with the money raised at the jumble sale. Thank you for donating the much needed items of jumble. Poppy Appeal was collected by enabling the Royal British Legion to continue their vital welfare and benevolent work. Thank you to everyone who contributed. Tissues Please can we ask every pupil to bring in a box of tissues. school does get through a substantial amount of boxes throughout the year, amounting to quite a large expense to the school. Boxes may be dropped off at the office. Thank you.

3 Please remember that is a nut free school. We have some children with nut allergies and it is important that we do not expose them to dangerous situations. Summer Term Clubs Timetable Clubs timetable for the summer term is attached to this newsletter for your information. If clubs are a paying club please apply via Wisepay or send the correct money/cheque in an appropriately named sealed envelope to the school office. Privately run clubs will not be on Wisepay. If you cannot print off the club letters yourself, spare copies will be available in the racks outside the office. Thank you. May Fair Contributions Jolly Jars consisting of sweets (but no nuts please), small toys etc. may be brought into school after the Easter holidays, so get creative whilst you have the time. re is a prize for the class with the highest amount of jars collected. Please get your child to hand the jars to their classteacher to be counted. Also, there is a mufti-day on Friday, 12 th May which allows your child to wear their own clothes in return for a bottle of drink (preferably alcoholic) for the tombola stall at the Fair. Please bring bottles to the school office. Red Nose Day Please remember to bring in any unwanted toys before Friday so that we can sell them at the Bring & Buy Sale after school on Friday, 24 th March. Your child may come to school wearing red for the price of a 1 donation to raise funds for Red Nose Day. Red Noses will also be available to buy for 1 each from Thursday, 23 rd March at breaktime and after school. Please consider a healthy alternative if you want to provide a treat at school for your child s birthday. Cross Country 11 th March On Saturday, 11 th March four runners (Rosie, James A, Lily and Caitlyn) took part in the Surrey s Cross Country Race at Reigate. We had to run 2.2km and half way round there was a hill. It was very tiring! It was a good learning experience for all and although it was tough, I loved it especially when I reached the finish. 4 Sports News Cross Country On Friday, 17 th March there was a cross country tournament at Oakfield. We did really well with a 5 th place (Keira B) and more. re were 18 people in Team including Lukas H, Caitlyn H and Kieran Bu, who were the first pupils over the line for their year group, which of course, also included Keira B. Keira said Never let your fears, or when you have hurt yourself stop what you like to do and what you are born for. Keira B (Hedgehogs) & Caitlyn H (Eagles) Netball - arrival of Spring has given us the opportunity to participate in a range of sports competitions. In netball there were matches for both A and B teams at Eastwick. A team met with strong opposition from Eastwick, but settled down to contain their opponents and only lost by a relatively small margin. Our B team won convincingly and thus each school were able to celebrate success. Our home matches against Greville saw the A team have to contend with a tall and athletic opposition which proved quite a challenge. y did not lose heart and the 2 goals scored by Caitlyn in the last quarter gave a boost to their spirits. B team had a very competitive game and narrowly lost by 1 goal in their 5-4 match. Rugby - In the Rugby Tournament held at St Peter s our team had some very close matches, which could have gone either way and they came a commendable 4th out of 8 teams. Our thanks go to all the parents who help to support the children and transport them to these events. children gain so much from these experiences and continue to impress with their sporting attitude and determination.
