3 ISC-Manama Newsletter Features 9 Kite Day 13 Sports Days With music blasting playing on speakers, both students and their parents enjoyed the many fun-filled activities laid out for them on the pitch. The KG Department organized an amazing kite day for KG1, KG2, and G1 students on Thursday, November 16. SLO Clubs Cake Competition 12 On the 15 th of October, ISC-Manama SLO held a cake competition and it was all hands on deck! Students were given the chance to create groups of four and to design their own cakes. Each school year, the SLO collaborates with different teachers for the creation of different clubs. 5 ISC-Manama Newsletter On-Campus Activities Picnics Grades 2-4 had the experience of healthy school picnics which were held on the grass just outside the school bookstore. The atmosphere was full of fun as music was playing and the students had a wonderful time playing and dancing. SLO prefects also helped with most of these picnics by helping the kids get out of their comfort zone and enjoy something new. SLO Job Fair Students from Grade 5 and above gathered around beautifully decorated booths that represented our eight SLO departments. There were flyers handed out at each booth to the potential future prefects specifying the job descriptions and requirements of each departments. Each student picked the department that stood out the most to them and they were later entered in the SLO database and were eventually put to work based on the department they chose. page 3

6 Selling Week One week before the school year officially starts, we hold our annual selling week; where the parents are given the opportunity to purchase anything their child might need for school, whether it was books, uniforms, or pay their fees. The selling week is run by hard working prefects at different stations, some giving the parents uniforms for their children to try on, others deal with the extra-curricular activities and hot meals, some help the parents with the book lists and so on. This helps the prefects develop their sense of responsibility and service, and establish a thicker bond between them, resulting in one big happy school. Senior Parade The Class of 2018 put on a show for the whole school at lunch time, parading to their favorite music in front of the administration. The rest of school raised banners showing their love and support for their seniors, before joining them in their dance celebrations. page 4

7 ISC-Manama Newsletter Off-Campus Activities Al-Areen Wild Life Trip Grade 3 had a fantastic opportunity to go on a fun-filled trip to the Al-Areen Wild Life Park. Students participated in a number of exciting activities that taught them the importance of teamwork prepared with the help of the Challenger Team Bahrain. In addition to that they got to observe remarkable animals of different kinds and shapes that expanded their knowledge about them. page 5

8 Adventure at the Bahrain Museum Over 100 students in grades 5 and 6 were a part of a fun educational trip to the Bahrain National Museum. From traditional artifacts to magnificent pearls, students learned all about Bahrain s wondrous past and fascinating discoveries. After this enrichment of history, they had an exciting treasure hunt in where they explored each inch of the museum, working as a team and using their minds. It was a great way to end a thrilling and enlightening trip. page 6

9 ISC-Manama Newsletter Grade 4 Visit Bahrain Fort Waking up early on a Saturday morning, Grade 4 students came to school with an excitement to witness the remarkable Bahrain Fort and its tremendous monuments. Students also visited a small museum around the fort where they learned about Bahrain s history. After being filled with knowledge about the fort and Bahrain s past, the trip ended with a rousing treasure hunt leaving everyone gleeful/jubilant with all they experienced and learned from the fun-filled trip. page 7

10 Special Days First Day of School It was that time of the year again, summer was over and the new school year began. Unsure of what to expect, students walked into the school to be greeted by our SLO team. Stand parents and students alike had the chance to take a picture behind the fabulous/ colorful 'welcome back to school' backdrop which slurred a great energy. The surprise was not over yet, entering the classrooms each student from Grade 5 and above had a small heartwarming note with a chocolate on top wishing them a 'sweet' year. It was a truly welcoming first day back at school. page 8

11 ISC-Manama Newsletter Sports Days With music blasting playing on speakers, both students and their parents enjoyed the many fun-filled activities laid out for them on the pitch. These activities ranged all the way from football to tug-of-war. The atmosphere was filled with livelihood and cheerfulness as parents, students and teachers alike enjoyed each other's company as they participated in this joyful event. This brought friends closer together and even helped form new friendships between parents. World Heart Day Almost 2 weeks into the school year, we celebrated World Heart Day. Bulletin boards were set up in each corridor, sharing with students the importance of the heart, and the 4 basics to keep any heart healthy; exercise, sleep, low stress, and eating healthy. page 9

12 Smile Day On a beautiful Thursday, the SLO Outreach Department decided to spread smiles around our school. They put together small cards with compliments and positive thoughts written on them, for students and staff alike to pass around and paint smiles on everyone s face. At lunch time, the football pitch was open for everyone to come and enjoy all the activities set up for them, like tug-of-war, a football match, and much more reminding everyone to keep on smiling in the midst of our busy schedules. page 10

13 ISC-Manama Newsletter Grandparents Day Grandparents Day was held in the KG department on November 8 & 9. Many grandparents visited their grandchildren to share in a day of celebration with arts and singing. The students thoroughly enjoyed the occasion and we thank everyone who made the effort to come along. page 11

14 Kite Day The KG Department organized an amazing kite day for KG1, KG2, and G1 students on Thursday, November 16. It was a lovely sunny day and once the wind picked up, students flew their kites high in the sky. It was definitely a memorable day! page 12

15 ISC-Manama Newsletter Competitions Cake Competition On the 15 th of October, ISC-Manama SLO held a cake competition and it was all hands on deck! Students were given the chance to create groups of four and to design their own cakes. More than 200 participants competed in the competition which saw the students decorate their cakes in a very creative way. The competition showed a lot of creative and hidden talents that impressed the judges. This event wouldn t have happened without the great help and support from the discipline and management prefects who are always on hand to provide support during the many events run by the SLO. The event was a huge success with the students who enjoyed their lovingly created cakes after the event. page 13

16 Spelling Bee This year s spelling bee, set up by our English department, was held for the grades 5 and 6 in the school s auditorium. It was hosted by two of our trustworthy seniors and it included several rounds that the students took part in. Parents watched their children with pride as they displayed their academic abilities. Round after round the number of competitors dwindled down to a single champion. page 14

17 ISC-Manama Newsletter Math Challenge The math department put together our first math challenge. It was an exciting yet educational competition between the students from Grade 5 where they put their math skills to the test. The challenge involved mental math skills accompanied by quick critical thinking. It also helped struggling students look at mathematics in a new light. page 15

18 SLO Conferences SLO Mini Conference On October 12 th and 13 th, the annual SLO mini conference took place for grades This year, the mini conference was run for the first time by SLO prefects of the school and only supervised by teachers. On Thursday, October 12, grade 10 to 12 students gathered after school in the auditorium. They were greeted by their two presenters, Aysha Bukamal and Saud Tolefat, who explained the agenda of the mini conference. Their first assignment was a brilliant team-building activity where each team was given different materials and specific words to use to make an advertisement with the given words. Along with this, they then had to turn one of the members into a robot that would be involved in the advertisement. In order to make sure each member of the team was involved, everyone needed to say at least one line. Following the activity, the school support director, Mr. Zakkak, gave an exceptional presentation about this year s theme, accountability, where he explained the difference between accountability and responsibility and the importance of the theme. Once this was all said and done, it was time to have dinner which the cafeteria staff wonderfully prepared. page 16

19 ISC-Manama Newsletter During the second day of the SLO camp, participants were kept busy with a trip, firstly, to the Bahrain National Bank Elderly for a community service program. Once at the venue, the participants were greeted and given a clear instructions of what will be done. From there, students were split in random into 4 different groups; gardening, painting, kitchen duty, and conversing with the elders. Students worked hard and learnt a lot from that visit and considered it a true lifechanging moment. After having spent about two hours, they said their goodbyes and headed back to school. From there, they were given a presentation about the energy bus by the heads, Aisha Husain and Ahmed Zidan, to explain for them the importance of positive thinking. Then it was the time for the second presentation languages of appreciation by Aysha Bukamal and Saud Tolefat that explains to them how to appreciate people. Following on from this, the students headed to The Lagoon, where the same teams of the day before were split into two groups. Both groups had to plan events for the upcoming year. After all of that, students were gathered on the steps in front of the Kuwait village to prepare for their last activity the treasure hunt. Students were given different colored ribbons for different teams, as there was to be a treasure hunt using the entire lagoon park. This took about 2 hours of teamwork, agility, and exercise of both the mind and body. At around 7:30 p.m. the treasure hunt ended and the students, after a truly an unforgettable mini conference, headed home. page 17

20 Student Life Training Conference This summer, a number of students selected from SABIS schools around the world got the opportunity to be part of the SABIS annual Student Life Training Conference with the aim of shaping them to be future leaders. They spend 10 days developing various different skills and learning from other students and SLCs from different SABIS schools all around the world and later on implementing them in their own SLO back home. The conference mainly consists of inspirational presentations that have positive effects on the students year after year and there are also many exciting activities in between. When they come back, students view not just the SLO but like in general in a new light and are almost transformed into a more positive and driven version of themselves. page 18

21 ISC-Manama Newsletter Grades 8 & 9 Mini Conference Grades 8 and 9 had their first mini-camp this year, set up for them by the upper grades. It began with a team building activity, The Caterpillar Race, followed by a presentation illustrating the importance of having positive energy and surrounding yourself with people who do. Next was another team building activity, the tower game, and another presentation discussing the languages of appreciation. After lunch, the students had an amazing treasure hunt around the school to sum up their day. All in all, it was an experience where they learned how to be leaders, how to think like leaders, and even more importantly, how to lead within a team. page 19

22 SLO Clubs Each school year, the SLO collaborates with different teachers for the creation of different clubs. Some could be new and some could be classics. SLO clubs are a fantastic way for students to spend their lunches valuably/usefully. By joining SLO clubs, students are given the opportunity to learn new skills while having fun at the same time! There are countless clubs including the Chess Club, the Robotics Club, Arabic Calligraphy Club, Sports Clubs, and much more. SLO Weekly News For the first time ever, the school launched a program called SLO Weekly News where weekly news of what is happening in school and upcoming events are broadcast on all smart boards each week in the morning. This has been planned over the summer by the SLO and discussed thoroughly between the SLC and the heads. It is a great cooperation between the juniors and seniors as some seniors run the presenting, editing, management, and the writing of the scripts are done by a good amount of juniors. After the writing team finishes the script, it is filmed on Saturdays behind a green screen provided by the school. Hopefully, after being fully developed the SLO are working on it becoming everyday instead of every week. page 20

23 ISC-Manama Newsletter Shadow Teacher Shadow Teachers are students who have been chosen by a teacher to help deliver the lesson. Two Shadow Teachers are selected for each subject, and the position is held in high regard. Shadow Teachers have many responsibilities including learning the concepts ahead of time to prepare in case a teacher is not present. Sometimes a Shadow Teacher can be asked to summarize the lessons to the students at the end of class as a recap of what they learned. Shadow Teachers can sometimes do a better job at teaching the class, as they relate better with the students and students learn better from other students in some cases. A Shadow Teacher is a role model for their peers at school. Corridor Prefects Corridor Prefects play a vital part in controlling discipline in the school corridors. They ensure that all corridors are cleared during the breaks and they maintain a quiet environment for the students in study groups. More than 50 prefects at ISC-Manama are corridor prefect contributing on a daily basis to the creation of a safe and welcoming environment that is conducive to learning. page 21
