1 Male Youth of the Year Award Michael Howse Michael Howse of O Donel High School is a leader, an activist and a role model to other students in his school. After years of being involved in his school council Howse was voted President last year, and continues to be involved in most aspects of the school s culture. He s a member of the Model UN, Chair of the Provincial Mental Health Conference and was also chosen to take part in the Encounters with Canada program. As CEO of the Robotics team, he took first place in provincial competition and fourth overall in the International Robotics competition. In athletics, he s coach of the Fencing Club, a member of the boys basketball, volleyball and ruby teams. He s also a musician who plays in the St. John s Salvation Army Temple Youth Band, Senior Band, Jazz Band, and sings in choir. Despite the fact that he has a documented learning disability, Howse maintains a near 90average while balancing his other commitments.

2 Female Youth of the Year Award Victoria Jackman Victoria Jackman of Mount Pearl Senior High is a well-rounded student committed to academic achievement, leadership and community citizenship. She is a fluently bilingual student who has won numerous awards for her academic excellence. She is the only student to achieve a perfect score in Histoire Mondiale She maintains a 93% average and has qualified for a Mun entrance scholarship. Based on her academic achievements, Jackman was selected to represent her high school in the national Loran Scholars Award program. She was also selected as a SHAD fellow, a program designed for students with a flare for math, science and technology. She received a fully funded scholarship to attend SHAD at the University of British Columbia. She s also a gifted public speaker who was a national finalist in French Public Speaking Championships, where she represented the province. She represented her school at Model UN and the NL Liquor Corporation launch of the high school program. She s also involved in a lot of extracurricular activities: the newspaper club, student council, traditional music band, and Causes for Concern. She s also a lifeguard and swimming instructor, a track and field official and a martial arts instructor. She also volunteers as a coach with Special Olympics athletes, and sits on the Food Allergy Canada national Youth Advisory Panel, taking a leading role in promoting their social media.

6 Adult Volunteer Working with Youth Award The Mount Pearl Senior High Breakfast Club The Mount Pearl Senior High Breakfast Club is a group of teachers who volunteer 5 days a week to provide a healthy breakfast to the student body. They grocery shop, meal plan and arrive early every day to prepare food for over 980 students, all to ensure that no child is left hungry in the classroom.

7 S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Award Emily Wiseman Emily Wiseman of O Donel High School is an exceptionally gifted student who spent the summer 2015 in a challenging WISE Summer placement at Memorial University s Engineering department. She was programming and researching robots. Much to the delight of her supervisors, she not only learned, how to program the robots, but went on to have her work published in the accredited scientific journal. She was also the only high school student to be invited to present her findings at the 24 th annual Newfoundland Electrical and Computer Engineering Conference this past fall. Wiseman is a first class honors student in Calculus, Math, Robotics, Physics and Chemistry.

8 Youth in Service Award Ryan Linstead Ryan Linstead of O Donel High School has given back to his community by promoting healthy living and life-saving skills. As a lifeguard, Linstead volunteers with the Easter Seals swimming program, as well as the wheelchair basketball program. He is also a valued member of the school s First Responder team.

10 Youth Volunteer of the Year Award Megan Glover Megan Glover of O Donel High School is dedicated to helping others and makes tremendous effort to do so. She created a successful fundraising concert series in support of an organization very close to her heart: Easter Seals. For her second annual concert, Megan s Night of Music, she brought well known musicians like Sean McCann and Rex Goudie on board, donating all of the proceeds to the Wheelchair Basketball program. She also volunteers with the Music Therapy program in the same organization. In her school community, she is a member of the Outreach team, Patriot Paws, Senior Outreach and Free the Children.

11 Literary Arts Award Breanna Sheppard Breanna Sheppard of Mount Pearl Senior High is a previous recipient of this award and in 2015, she also won the Arts and Letters Awards Junior Poetry Section. She is a member of the Creative Writing club and is committed to improving her writing by practicing her craft everyday.

12 Youth Group of the Year O Donel High School Robotics Team O Donel High School Robotics Team is all about promoting advanced scientific learning through innovation and problem solving. As a result, the achievements of these 14 students often inspire others in the youth community. Last year the group won the regional competition and placed fourth internationally in the MATE Underwater Robotics Competition.

13 Official of the Year Award Ashely Hammond Ashley Hammond of Mount Pearl Referees Association is a level 3 official who volunteers in all divisions from novice to midget hockey. Being a female in a male dominated role has earned respect through her dedication to the role by continually upgrading her skills. She also volunteers as an instructor with hockey camps and skills sessions throughout the season.

14 Team of the Year Award Mount Pearl Senior High Huskies Soccer Team The 17 members of the Mount Pearl Senior High Huskies Soccer Team won first place in the provincial 4A Indoor and 4A Outdoor soccer provincial championships. All with only one yellow card issued. Many on the team also volunteered to teach basic soccer skills to younger players in the minor division.

15 Adult Volunteer Working with Youth in Sports Award Gerald Costigan Gerald Costigan has become a major fundraising asset for the Mount Pearl Marlins. He rounded up sponsors and donations for the dance and auction, making the fundraising initiative one of the most successful to date! He also is great at rounding up volunteers and he is a community relationship builder who never passes up an opportunity to forge new partnership.

16 Male Youth Athlete of the Year Liam Hickey Liam Hickey of O Donel High School is a celebrated and sought after athlete in both sledge hockey and wheelchair basketball. In the latter, he is the first from his province to be named to Junior and Senior National wheelchair basketball teams. Hickey plays for PEI in the Maritime league, and helped the national senior men s team earn silver medal at the Para Pan Am games. In the busy 2015 season he also competed on the national team at the Toronto Cup Challenge, and at the World Super Cup in Germany. In sledge hockey, he was scouted then earned a spot on the Canadian Senior Men s Sledge Hockey Team playing with the best in the country. The next stop for hickey: the Paraolympics in Rio.

17 Female Athlete of the Year Award Sarah Hiscock Sarah Hiscock of O Donel High School is a celebrated basketball player who last year, lived out her dream as one of the youngest players called up to play on the under 17 provincial team for the National Championships in Edmonton. She finished first in the tournament with a total of 2-pointers made. She was the top scorer for team NL. Sarah has been recognized as one of the top 25 players in the country for her age and was invited to try out for the National team. In 2015, she was awarded the Premier s athletic award for excellence in basketball.

18 Performing Arts Award Joseph Coffin Joseph Coffin of Mount Pearl Senior High School is proof that hard work and talent pay off. He is already a successful and celebrated full-time musician. He is the winner of the 2015 Arts and Letter Competition Junior division Music category for his original songwriting. He
