It was also an opportunity to reflect on the value we place on peace and security and to remember those who have lost this in the events of this week. We also said 'thank you' and 'goodbye' to Mrs Maddy Tucker who has been our School Business Manager, and Mrs Marian Beresford, who has been our Chair of Governors over the last couple of years. Both have given a huge amount of time and energy to their respective roles and I am very grateful to them for everything that they have done to support the work of the Federation. After twenty four years working at Cheriton Fitzpaine, Mrs Carey Thorne has decided that it is time for her to retire from her post as Head of Teaching and Learning from the end of next term. Over the last few years she has led the school with enthusiasm, stamina and optimism and always put the children s wellbeing and learning at the heart of everything that she does. I would like to thank her especially for her welcome this term and for all the time and energy that she has put into the school and its children. I have really enjoyed working with her and her team and will miss her cheerful presence in the school in September. Part of my role as Executive Headteacher is to ensure that there is good succession planning for the leadership of the schools in the Federation and the Governors and I will be putting a plan in place straight after Easter to do this. We will let everyone know about this as soon as any decisions are made. Thanks a million John This Week We Would Like to Wish a Happy Birthday to: Jessica, Ruby & Ash
2 Once again, congratulations to our competition winners; Cathy, Esme, Katie, Sam and Phoebe who each received a 5 book voucher to spend at the book fair. Last Friday afternoon the children thoroughly enjoyed their Sporty Friday afternoon. The children were in house teams and participated in a variety of activities. I have to say that I find the activities carried out in house teams are a wonderful way for the children of different ages to support and encourage each other. It was a fun and very rewarding afternoon. 150 Was raised for Sport Relief. I sincerely hope you were one of the fortunate people that saw the wonderful Easter Concert this morning. What an uplifting performance by one and all! It was particularly rewarding to hear the individual musicians; didn t they do well! Thanks must also go to the music teachers and class teachers for their help in preparing the children for their performances. A special thank you, to Mr Curtis who kindly agreed to accompany our children today. The last day of term was indeed a very busy one as the whole Federation got together for the end of term Federation assembly at Cheriton Fitzpaine. Each school had the opportunity to share some songs and to listen to the other schools share some writing and songs too. Next term a different class will share something. Today we said goodbye to Maddy Tucker who has been our school (and more recently federation) bursar for some eleven years. She has been a huge part of the senior management team and we will miss her greatly. Maddy is retiring to sunny Bude; I am sure you would like to join me in wishing her a healthy and happy retirement. Finally, I would like to wish you all a very happy Easter break we will see you on 11 th April to begin the summer term! Glynis Harris EXMOOR CHALLENGE PRACTICE WALK Our intrepid Federation Year 6 walkers who trekked about 10 miles across Exmoor last Sunday. This walk was in preparation for the Exmoor Challenge and all the children were a pleasure to be with as they practised their map reading skills and determination to com.
3 On Wednesday 23 rd March the tag rugby team travelled back to Haywards to take part in the final round of matches. After a good win last week, there was plenty of confidence as we entered the first game against Brampford Speke. After a successful practice game, the main game started with lots of excellent running lines from all the team. Once again the team was meticulously organised by Freddie and Ben and the defence was on top form. Strong runs from the girls, particularly Gracie and Rianna meant that we built a good half time lead. After a stutter start to the second half, the team once again got on top and finished strongly, winning We then moved on to play our federation rivals Thorverton. All the children knew each other from various residential and sports events so it was lovely to see them interacting so positively before the game. Again, another positive showing in the friendly meant we were well set for the main game. After slipping to 2-0 behind the team showed great character to come back and win These fantastic results meant that we finished second overall with Landscore worthy winners once again. The team were delighted with their trophy, medals and certificates and Mr. Baker also said they could keep their Scotland shirts, which was a nice bonus for them. As I have been for the whole tournament I was extremely proud of the team. They represented Newton. St. Cyres Primary School with great passion and were a credit to the school. Can I also thank those parents and guardians who helped with transport and who came along to support the team.
