1 Newsletter October 2017 Carleton Community High School Headteachers Message I would like to thank parents and carers for working with us this term to support our improvements. We have recently experienced an Ofsted monitoring visit, which I am pleased to report was a positive experience. You will find a letter relating to this on the school website. Parents have expressed some concerns relating to school holidays for 2018/19. The PAT will follow the holidays pattern adopted by Wakefield schools for the coming academic year. In a drive towards further improvement we will be remodelling the school website. We recently asked Parents 'Forum members for suggestions relating to what you, as a group, would like to see. Please contact us if you have any suggestions relating to the school website, no matter how small. H Bolton Headteacher Open Evening On Thursday the 21st of September the school held its Open Evening for the new 2018 intake of students. The evening was an enjoyable and well attended one, and the displays and exhibitions by the various departments were excellent. If you were unable to attend and would like to see round the school, please contact the school using the details shown on the home page.

5 YEAR 7 HIGH ADVENTURE RESILIENCE TRIP The Year 7s recently returned from their Resilience Trip at High Adventure in Skipton, looking extremely tired but having accomplished a great deal. While on the trip they were required to: Build a raft and sail it using barrels, ropes and poles. Climb a 30ft high rope course. Indoor rock climbing. Abseiling. Negotiate an underground labyrinth in the dark. Team building exercises. Low ropes obstacle course. Zip wire. Archery Additionally, they were responsible for making their lunches, cleaning up after themselves and ensuring their rooms were tidy every day. Each pupil gave maximum effort and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. The skills that they learned will now be applied to the classroom, showing more focus and determination to do well.

6 HISTORY NEWS From Friday 13 - Monday 16 October, two Year 9 pupils had the opportunity to visit France and Belgium as part of the First World War Centenary Battlefield Tours Programme. Sean Illingworth was chosen to lay the wreath at the ceremony at Menin Gate, and James Bamford was chosen by the guides as the best pupil overall on the trip. It was a fantastic experience and both boys were a credit to themselves and the school. Battlefields

8 SHINE PROGRAMME 2017 This week saw the launch of this years SHINE programme. On the 16th October 2017 the SHINE programme manager Raj Mann visited the school to launch the programme to the SHINE cohorts at Carleton. SHINE is an initiative set up by the University of York, and aims to support pupils from schools across Yorkshire, the Humber and North East to reach their full potential. SHINE is open to pupils in Year 6 to 11 who have been identified by their school as being high achieving and from a group that is currently under-represented at university. It aims to inspire, motivate and encourage pupils to achieve academic success, and raise their aspirations towards higher education. The programme was launched to the whole of year 7 during an assembly. As a year group they were introduced to higher education and the range of benefits of going to university. The school will now select 30 year 7 students to be part of the SHINE programme whilst they are at Carleton.
